Argh!

I live in a "rural" area and everyone here seems to be completely ignorant that there's other people on the face of this planet. Everyone here just lets their dogs run around without being on a leash or being fenced in. People move here and say "oh, this is the country, I can do whatever I want".  ::) It's really annoying, because it's really just a suburb but with a ton of trees and you're allowed to have farm animals. When you can see your neighbor's house from your house, you're not in the country imho.

I am basically limited to bringing my dog for a "walk" in our driveway because if I take a left out of my driveway a big fat doggie runs up and starts barking at us, and my dog hates other dogs so I have to pick her up, hold my hand over her muzzle to keep her quite, and go back into our driveway while this dog is glaring and growling at us. If I take a right out of the driveway, I have a really really angry and territorial dog to deal with, once I almost had to pick up a big rock and throw it at her but luckily the owners finally came outside and took her away, then if I head further up that way, there's two retrievers to deal with, while they're all super friendly if I am alone, they're not friendly with my dog.

Then, even further up the road there's this other dog who once came out and terrorized my dog, my baby niece in the stroller, and myself I had to keep kicking the dog in the face to stop it from biting us as my puppy is screaming like a human and the baby giving me this "wtf? I am going to cry in a minute or so" look; someone had to pull over and help get the dog away. I've had problems with it coming out and chasing me and my dog before, and the owners are full aware of this but they continue to let it run around. Other people have had problems with this dog too, even if they're by themselves without walking a dog he comes out and barks and chases people.

I work at a law firm, and we have quite a number of dog bite cases from the area all due to people not fencing or leashing their dogs. these dogs just come out and attack people and other dogs. But no one will even entertain the idea of a leash law because they're all about their rural independence. While I am all for doing whatever you want, there are certain limits when your behaviors start affecting other peoples lives in a negative way.

Seriously.... get a fence, or stop being lazy and get up and walk the dog every time it needs to go pee.

So, that's my rant for today, and now I am going to take my dog for our exciting walk in the driveway. Woohoo!

Lol - I saw that at first also, and was thinking - Heck! Too bad it wasn't about "leashes"... 'cause I was just on that topic!

It's pretty similar where I live, LearnedHand: Rural enough for dogs and chickens to be all over the road... but not truly country (that'd be about a mile in any direction other than south...). Fortunately, we have a fairly large fenced-in property... so our dog has room to run (and poop, etc...).

I would never want to advocate hurting a dog... but if it's the dog or you (or your dog) - have you considered pepper-spray, or something? It'd probably only need to be administered once (and if once doesn't work... well... mebbe two or three times will...).

Buy a squirt bottle, fill it with a mix of water and cayanne pepper. Go for your walk (without the baby), and spray those bitches.

Why get a leash? I figure that if the dogs loves you, he/she won't run away.

It's not about YOU. It's about maintaining control over the animal so it does not bother other people.

Barking, biting, wanting to be petted, and pooping are all behaviors that an unleashed animal could do.

I do actually have some pepper spray somewhere, that's a good idea (I'll just be careful of the wind direction). I used to have this clicker thing that let out a loud noise that only dogs can hear, but I can't tell if the dogs have gotten used to it or if the battery is going dead.

Lol I hate having to bring my dog to someone's house because of this reason! I know she'll refuse to pee outside and just hold it to go on their rug.

Haha - we have one of those clicker things, which my S.O. got somewhere... I don't know that it's ever worked, but she's always zapping the cats... or the dog, when it jumps at the window trying to get the cats...

She seems to think it's effective... so I s'pose it's good for something...

Either you're not understanding the issue, or you're just yanking my chain.

Obviously you would not pepper spray *your* pets...but if an unleashed dog presented as a threat, or a nuisance, and the rightful owner does nothing to curb its behavior...pepper spray is a less-than-lethal option.

You probably don't want to consider lethal options...but in some parts of the US, it is legal to kill unleashed animals when they are known to harass people or other animals.

I have only killed animals in self-defense, not for it being a "nuisance." If a dog licks me, I'm not going to pepper spray the poor thing or kill it. Let the punishment suit the crime. Heck, I had a leashed rottweiler come out of nowhere and attack me. It tried to bite me in the face, so I had no choice but to snap its neck and run away!  :o

Seems to me that if the dog were licking her, this thread would not exist...

A leash that's not held by a person is useless. (Odd...I remember typing this before posting, but it's not here now...oh well.)

My story of uncontrolled dogs:

My family and I were out walking on a forest park trail (guns are "not allowed" there). Three dogs came running down the trail, barking and carrying on...even though I was armed (against the law, but I don't obey laws that can get me killed), I had to crouch and bodily protect my 2 little boys (4 and 5) from the dogs. Wife protected my daughter (10) with her body.

In the 20 secs it took for the owners to catch up with the dogs, I'd manuevered the boys so that I could grab the collar of one of the dogs, and could reach for my 9mm...when the owners showed up and restrained their dogs, I let them know how close they came to having dogmeat for lunch.

They walked away with the dogs leashed.

I don't joke around with animals like that.

Anywho, a correction: A leash that isn't held by a person or tied on both ends is useless.  :P

Yeah, I'd be fine with happy licking dogs  :D but these dogs are growling, being territorial, chasing, trying to nip/bite, etc.

Ugh, I completely agree with you LearnedHand, and share your frustrations. I used to let things slide until two incidents occurred:

I had a friend mauled by some loose pitbulls while she was out for a bike ride. They grabbed her leg and did some severe damage. Luckily somehow she stayed on the bike and got the heck out of there. Owners nowhere in site. The second one: I was out for a jog when a guy with a few unleashed dogs approached. The dogs came running right at me and I tried to avoid them by hopping off the trail. The guy called out 'it's ok! They're friendly!' As he was saying this, one of the 'friendly' dogs bit me on the leg, drawing blood.

Unless a dog is strictly obedient at all times, it needs to be on a leash or in a fenced yard. End of story. I started carrying rocks to chuck at aggressive dogs who get too close while I'm out jogging. It's worked pretty well so far.

I was attacked by a dog I had recently adopted. He ate one of the pieces he pulled off my arm, another piece stayed inside my sleeve when I took off my shirt. I've never felt as much pain in my life as when he was pulling the meat off me. He had to be put down, he attacked my two other dogs. I still love and keep big dogs, though. This was difficult to write.

Ford and Dev I am glad you both are okay.

My older sister got bit my a dog when she was little, the thing jumped over it's fence and chased her down the street and got her in the shoulder. Luckily she's okay.

Oh wow - I'm so sorry, Devlyn... for you and the dog. We always get our pups from the pound, and it's a bit of a roll of the dice... particularly as it seems that very nearly every mixed-breed, in these parts, is heavy on the Pit.

I have been very fortunate, in my life, that I have never had any trouble with a dog.

This was a yellow/chocolate lab mix.  Not what you would expect to be a vicious dog.

No, you wouldn't... I do think that the chocolates are the most "rambunctious", in that breed; we have had two (one still with us... the other off to parts unknown - presumably The Big Field In The Sky... he was a bit psychotic...).

No need to go throwing stones. Anywho, I think that dogs should be allowed to roam free sometimes. If not, they get antsy, which is perhaps why they get frustrated and take things out on people. I saw a lot of dogs in Ecuador roaming around. They were perfectly fine.
