Title: "What makes a perfect day ?"
Post by: Anatta on March 11, 2013, 03:10:29 PM
Kia Ora,

I was going to put this in the philosophy section but thought better of it, as it's an open question of which the answers can be  :icon_bored: 'run of the mill',  :eusa_think: philosophical ,  spiritual,  or just plain  :icon_yikes: whacky  ;) ;D

At the Buddhist meeting last night a friend asked this "What makes a perfect day ?"

So this is my question to you all "What would make 'your' day perfect ?"

I love this topic!

For me, a perfect day: weather that is t-shirt and shorts friendly with a slight breeze, spending time with a loved one, having the opportunity to perform a random act of kindness for a stranger, and something slightly unexpected happening.

I've had a number of these days. One I remember is when I was in Banff with my ex. The weather was perfect, and obviously I was with her and we were having a great day. Nice lunch, nice walk, etc. We met a woman at a shop who mentioned in passing that she loved frogs, and then mentioned that her husband was in the hospital. So we went to another shop down the street and saw a stuffed frog, and we both thought the same thing: we needed to get this frog to that woman. So we bought it and we went back, and we said "We thought you could use this." She teared up and gave us this huge hug, and it just made me so happy.

Later, we were going to walk to a museum, but got lost. We found a beautiful path and walked along it holding hands instead. :) Unexpected, but ended up being better. The Greyhound also never arrived to take us back, so we shared a taxi with a couple, and got to meet them as well.

That, to me, was a perfect day. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

It wasn't always this way- a perfect day was once very very far away, or it was only when I had a transcendent moment of bringing joy to another person. I savored those perfect days, but they were few and far between.

Hard to say this without sounding obsequious. So, I shall embrace obsequiousness.

So much has changed for me in the past year, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Now for me:
A perfect day, for me, is every day that I wake up
because I wake up as my self, and I have another chance
to be in my own skin, in my own perceptions, connected to my world, and to all of the amazing souls in it,
and on even my worst days when pain or loss or frustration are present, still, I wouldn't be any who else, any where else, any when else. This is enough.
If my life ended today, right this moment, I would be at peace
If my life never ended, but continued as it has been, I would be at peace
but I will give thanks for every moment as it comes, when and if it comes
and celebrate the last day the same as the first
and celebrate the best days the same as the worst
they are all beyond perfect for me

Waking up on a narrow boat with Poopie at my side, starting the day with bacon sandwiches & a coffee whilst listening to Elgar before I head off to nowhere in particular at a snails pace. Then for dinner I moor up at a pub & have a steak (rare) with beer battered chips.
Then before setting off again I find a nice quiet field & spend half an hour pooping poopie with a game of fetch, his infectious joy at chasing a ball lifts my spirit & we jump back on the boat & head off again, he's so knackered he curls up next to me for a snooze as the wind ruffles his fur.
In the evening I sit down with a meal of jacket potatoes & portabello mushrooms filled with stilton washed down with a glass of red wine, then off to bed to be gently rocked to sleep with the sound of the water lapping against the hull of the boat
