Title: It's gradually dawning on me....
Post by: Randi on March 25, 2013, 02:18:01 PM
It's gradually dawning on me that I have become non-op by default.

I'm 63 1/2 years old, and weigh 224 lbs, with a BMI of 34.

I have never had any counseling, so a year of RLE, even if I began today, would put me very near to 65 years old.

Dr McGinn requires a BMI of 28, which means I would need to lose 40 lb.  Although he's not on my list, Dr Suporn won't operate on anyone over 65 years of age.  Dr Bowers has a year long waiting list.

I'm hypogonadic and have negligible testosterone production, so an orchiectomy would be pointless.

I don't know whether I would have actually gone on to SRS or not, but it seems the option is quickly vanishing with time.  Money is not much of a factor to me, since I'm retired with a more than adequate income.  I'm not sure how I feel about coming to this realization.  Perhaps there is a bit of relief that the pain and nearly yearlong disability resulting from the operation will be avoided.

Evidently I have plenty of company here on this forum.

Health issues as well as age often preclude us from having surgery.

Where is that time machine when we need it.

Ain't that the truth?

Couple of ideas for folks that are reading this later. Go for an orchiectomy. The two SRS letters needed in US and Thailand. India? "Ain't" a big deal there. Hormones in Thailand or India? Dirt cheap and you don't need anybodies permission. You do need to be tested. Put your money into body contouring and facial work. Tummy tucks on guys? Done every day. Electrolysis and laser. Will peel a decade or two off your looks at this age. Look. I quote this work. I'm currently quoting electrolysis - full body - that will in and of itself justify the entire trip to Thailand vs. US pricing. Procedure. Flights. Hotel. And you'll still have money in the bank. Facial work. Often more critical to patients self esteem than the SRS. ... There ya go.. Have a happy retirement.  Yes. Financing is available. Plenty of sources in the US... Medical finance? They are jumping through flaming hoops to make these loans these days. One client just got $15,000 at 6.9% with a $400 a month payback. ???  >:-)

I second going to Thailand. You could always get a cosemetic grs as well if you wanted an easier recovery. BMI would possibly be an issue, but not the RLE.

Suporn has a BMI limit of 30.5 and over a year wait list, so he extra out for other reasons as well.

PAI could be a very good choice, age is not a problem and a very good hospital.
