Title: High School Reunion?
Post by: Sweet_Steffy_Bee on April 01, 2013, 06:49:51 PM
My ten year reunion is coming up next year I think. I have been really grappling with how to go about it, being transgender.. I want to go as myself of course, but I don't know if that would be a good idea.

Anyone else here gone to their reunion, true to themselves and honest with the world? What was it like for you? I mean personally, for you, as situations like these are unpredictable at best..

I want to know of this was some kind of closure or milestone for you..

Right now, I'm not even planning on going.. But a small part of me does want to go, and go as myself. What I need the most work on is my voice; I sound.. Strange.. When I practice..

And my massive hands!

:) I have it easier, I never graduated, and couldn't care less if those that went when I did are even still breathing :)

My advice, forget what gender they thought you were, we all know reunions are about having the best job in the room and having the best looking partner with you (whatever that entails).

Heck I'd use it for fun. 'You have me mistaken for my twin, who sadly died recently, I'd rather not talk about it'.

I went to my ten year, though that was a fair bit of time before I accepted myself so I was still presenting male.  I look forward to my next reunion cause they really need to meet me.

Anyway, I was two fisting Corona's all night.  People kept coming up to me apologizing for how mean they were to me in high school.  All ended with, have a beer on me!

I would encourage you to go.  I had a great time at mine and I was glad to learn so many of my classmates were successful.  It was nice to see people who treated me so badly matured into decent people.  I found the whole experience hopeful.

If your voice ain't perfect I think that's ok too.  Just own it, and have fun! :)

If I were you I'd go.... as yourself.

I mean what have you got to lose? Have any of these people kept in touch? If they haven't, you've got everything to gain.

I wouldn't worry about your hands, or about any other part of you, or indeed about passing at all.

I'd just walk in there as cool as a cucumber, just as if they know you for who you really are, just as if it's normal for you.

Sure you'll freak a few people out but if you go in there acting normal I bet you'll end up having a great evening and might even make a friend or two.

If anyone says anything (which I doubt, most people avoid confrontation) just look them in the eye and say 'Yeah, this is me. What about it?'

Sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone is great for developing confidence.

I have not gone to a reunion, but my old classmates do know.  And I am still friends with many of them.
