The conservative  Illinois Review blog posted a review of Shrek the Third, giving it a thumbs down because they felt that the mannish character of Doris the Ugly Stepsister, voiced by CNN's Larry King, is the byproduct of the  Hollywood propaganda machine aimed at luring America's youth towards the evils of ->-bleeped-<-.

I am sick and tired of not getting the latest LBGT agenda!  I filed my name and address change weeks ago and I haven't even received an acknowledgment from headquarters!

I really am tired of having to borrow agendas' from people when these fun-duh-mentalist seem to get them before the ink is even dry!  I am really starting to get mad!

I don't know who to subvert anymore!  At first I thought is was just my family, ok I did that when I came out.  But now what?  And I haven't even seen the new Shrek yet so how can I extol the virtues of transsexuality if I don't see the latest clips?

Really ladies this is getting out of hand!  Who's in charge here?  A bunch of bimbo blonds?

LOL, to be fair though, it should be mentioned that there ARE people who do just that: dress up and go out in public for the thrill, whether erotic or emotional. A friend and I just saw the flick today, and I'm glad there was an explanation as to who the really butch woman character was, because I could not figure it out? Take her out of the dress, and drop her in a pair of slacks, and she easily passed as a guy. It was also obvious that a male actor was voicing over her part.

That whole movie had a really weird vibe. Not at all like the first couple of Shrek's IMHO.
But the crowd was full of kids and parents, and no one made any kind of comment about that butch character. More ado about nothing from the right.

This is just ridiculous. Whether the critics agreed with the characterization or not, they have to realize that reality is diverse, and people appreciate a hint of realism in character design when watching a film.

I now realize that I didn't see that one either, so now I guess I need to rent it.

Kids are always going to question people when they see something they haven't encountered before. Little girls questioning butch women about their identity the first couple of times they meet someone is normal and that situation has been going on for generations. It is also critical for young women that will grow up to be butch themselves. The first time you meet someone as a child, that you can identify with personally is always a type of epiphany, especially so in the queer community.

Meeting one person that is out and about and doing their thing on their own terms in the real world can go a long way to undermining the negative idears sown in the minds of young impressionables by family and authority figures, if your identity is out of bounds with the normative.

What I want to know is who taught those kids that phraseology, "man in a dress." I am not sure children would adopt that terminology on their own if it were not first planted in their mind. Kids might question something out of the norm, but typifying someone as being outside the norn of what they appear to be is a learned behaviour, methinks.

I don't think your question makes any sense.  "That person looks like a man.  That person is wearing a dress.  That's a man in a dress."  Of course they would adopt that on their own.  For a 6-10 year old child, that would be the obvious thing to say.  They don't know how to think abstractly yet.  To them, everything is concrete.

Hmmm, I had issues because I did think abstractly but then I was reading on a college level very early in my development and exploring the universe through television shows, books, and magazines.

You are of course welcome to your own opinion. But I reiterate that most children do NOT know how to look outside of the box unless they are taught. Child see's a person that looks masculine, i.e. butch. Person is "correcty" attired for her gender role. Child makes observation, that woman looks like a man. ha, ha, ha! Children are cruel. But it a greater leap for that child to concur that that person is not a masculine looking woman, but is instead a man dressing as a woman. Or, "man in a dress." Popular culture has made that phrase available, and kids adopt it readily like all other stuff in the media or on-line.

There have always been women that appeared more masculine than feminine, and men that are the opposite. Children pick up on cues of behaviour, but the conclusions they draw, or the language they use is coached in popular culture. That IMHO.
