Title: Getting used to ma'm, miss, she etc.
Post by: dlee on May 11, 2013, 06:32:38 PM
I went to a friend's house for dinner, there were a few other people I didn't know so they didn't know I was trans. When referring to me they all used female pronouns- she, her, girl etc. How long did it take you ladies to get used to people calling you ma'm, her, she, etc. It was just a bit weird, still getting used to it.

I'm getting more sirs than usual. Maybe I'm just more sensitive to it. It is a little depressing though...

Easy way to identify transwomen: Address them with "Miss" or "Ma'am", look for a smile. :D

I am not really passable and fully out yet, so I don't have too much experience with this.  However, my close friends have used female pronouns with me for a while.  Honestly, it always felt natural and I enjoyed it.  Though, it does get a little awkward when they say it in public and I am in boy mode.  I have seen people take a good look at me in those moments. Also, I have gotten ma'med on the phone a couple of times at my old job.  That always set me back because I wasn't trying to pass and don't believe my voice is very feminine at the moment.  Still, hearing male pronouns has always bothered me and I can't wait for it to stop.  So, all in all it is pleasant when it happens.

While it may be awkward in the beginning, take this as a big sign that you are passing really well.  That's a good thing in my book.

I don't always feel I pass even though I know I pass pretty well now. I think that's when the awkwardness happens. When you don't think you pass when you do. I haven't gotten a sir in at least 2 months and even then that was the only one in quite a while. Though I never seem to get any miss's only ma'am's. I often get 'ladies' when I'm out with my mom. I've started to have more confidence in my passability lately and I enjoy being correctly gendered.

As you can probably tell this is my first time posting on here. I signed up a while ago and just got around to voicing myself.

I don't think I started properly adjusting to female pronouns until I went full-time.  The constant backwards and forwards of part-time living was really confusing in a lot of ways. I have been full-time for a little over two months now and would be surprised (and probably a little stroppy) to be sir'd, though this has only been for about the last two weeks.

Rosie.

Boy HOWDY.  That is how I feel, sometimes, that my figure passes, but the rest of me is shaky.   :embarrassed:  My partner always tells me to relax, not to worry about it.  She is a huge help.

Working in customer service with direct contact with customers sorta kills the thrill when you hear it many times daily.

I hope I never get used to it. Every time a female pronoun or salutation refers to me, I get this most amazing sense of the possible. They mean ME! Is it really possible for me to be a woman?!? Can such a wonderful thing truly be? I know after I'm full time it will become common place and unremarkable, but I'm savoring the wonder of it in the meantime.

It took a couple months. But now I think it's rude when people don't say maam... when they just say "Yes" or "No". I keep having to remember that around here it's kinda impolite to ma'am somebody my age, makes us feel old.

I've been called 'sir' or 'mister' three times in 20 months and am called ma'am, miss, she or her constantly. I expect it, but never get tired of hearing it and I hope I never do. We've all earned being given the respect any other woman receives.

It actually gets a little old once you start hearing it a couple hundred times a day.

At first it was very comforting and fun to hear...some times I wasn't sure they were talking to me!! Sometimes I would look if someone called out "sir can I help you" when they were talking to someone else.

I am fairly use to it now....but I still have to think "oh wait, their talking about me" when customers or co workers are referring to or about me!

Ya this hasn't happened in awhile now but at first I had to train myself....Shelly, don't turn your head when they call out sir!!

This was really awkward when starting working someplace where there was a person with my former name....my first week they paged for ***** to call ext.## I almost picked up the phone to say...this is so and so!! I had a laugh about this one!!
