Title: Smelling Good
Post by: Simon on May 16, 2013, 04:01:54 PM
Probably the only stereotypically feminine thing about me is I buy a lot of soaps, shampoos, fragrance oils, and candles. Ya know...smell good stuff. I don't like anything that smells like flowers or baby powder though.

Lately I've been buying a lot of the male body washes and shampoos. One thing I have noticed is most of them smell just about the same. I do try to avoid the peppery patchouli ones.

I'm always trying to find ones that have a orange or citrus mixed with cloves kinda scent. I really like the Old Spice Wolfthorne body wash and Lacoste Challenge Cologne. Oh, and I have noticed women like the smell of Dove Men's Bodywash. I've had women sniff me and ask what I was wearing more than once by just washing in that soap, lol.

Do any of you guys have a favorite scent? Maybe a product you'd recommend? Is it more citrus, woodsy, or just fresh?

I like Old Spice wolfthorne too, hah. I smell like it right now!

I admit I have worked my way through the Old Spice flavors - I used Denali for a long time, Courage is good, so is Komodo.  I basically just grab a new smell each time I run out of body soap or deodorant.

I'd like to branch out beyond Old Spice to something else for special occasions, etc, but I don't know where to begin. Department stores?

When I presented masculine (behaviour, voice etc.) I absolutely loooved Tag body spray...and I still do. It's sort of tropical and almost fruity smelling. The other one I used to like was playboy Miami cologne...which is also somewhat tropical. Out of the axe products, I preferred Phoenix...although it could be partly because I associated it with a guy I had a slight crush on.

Vault, Tamerisk, and Pour Lui (by Oscar de la renta) are musky and fresh at the same time. Tamerisk is the most musky smelling of the three.

You might want to check those out just for curiosity. :)

Also, test every cologne you buy, since they each smell different on different people.

I love fresh smells, not sweet ones.
The thing I really disliked about woman smells is that they are usually somewhat sweet. When I visited my mom for a couple of days and used her showerstuff, I always had the feeling I was rubbing candy over my body. You know, fruity, peachy smells. I hated it.

That's why I love the sports, guys stuff. It's refreshing and not sweet smelling.

Haha, me too. Took a shower and used Wolfthorne bodywash and Axe Apollo shampoo. My gf likes going in the bathroom when I shower because she thinks it smells good in there.

Have you tried the Old Spice Fiji scent? They've got it in liquid and bar soap. That's another I really like. I've never tried Old Spice deodorants. I've noticed most of them are just deodorants and not antiperspirants. I gotta have one that is a antiperspirant too or it doesn't work well on me. I usually just get Degree Men's or Speed Stick.

Yep, check out the colognes in Macy's or JcPenney. I don't buy expensive cologne often but when I do it's from one of those two stores. Bath & Body Works has some nice Men's stuff but there's not a whole lot of selection there.

Neither me or my family buy expensive soaps, shower gels or anything else, so I just grab whatever's nearest to me/I feel is appropriate for my dirtiness.  Normally that ends up being a white bar of Dove soap, not sure if that's supposed to have a flavour or anything.

The only shower gel I particularly like the smell of is "Kick Start Zesty Lime" from a really cheap supermarket here called Aldi, and it costs £0.89 haha.  The smell reminds me of lime flavour jelly, and I used to eat that all the time as a kid.  I'm not too convinced about its cleaning powers for 89p, but it's nice to reminisce.

One day I really need to get round to buying some Lynx just to see what everyone's obsession with it is.  And I need to isolate which thing in the bathroom smells like someone I used to know, that's good for reminicing as well.  I think it's a certain deodorant but I'm not sure.  Oh and I got some carbolic soap almost exactly a year ago now (it was as a kind of jokey present for my birthday) but I like the wrapper, and the smells a little too strong to smell of generally, so I don't want to use it.

I always been pretty sensetive with those kind of smells.

I hate many smelling which normal people think is good like many parfumes, my brother is opposite and love them.
insteed I enjoy smell of fire, bacon, butter, citro icecream, spirit, and gas, (not many parfumes are made to smell like that)

I used to use crystals for deodorants and neutral things like that, but now I use some with abit of smell in because I just dont care.
My only parfume I own is Allure homme sport, I dont use it very often but its the only parfume I ever wanted for myself, beside that I never use parfumes.

I've always worn men's body spray just because I like the smell, I find it comforting. Axe is usually my go-to, but I think I'm gonna switch to Old Spice now. The smell is a LOT stronger, and Axe's smell seems to dissipate after maybe an hour or so, and I don't smell like I have anything on. Old Spice lasts a long time.

Also, the only body wash I've used so far that actually leaves a scent is Irish Springs, and it's not 100% my tastes. Yet again, Axe left me smelling like nothing at all (unless you rub your nose against my skin). I need something that can overpower the chlorine smell of my water. :/ So maybe Old Spice can do that for me.

I was a Lushaholic for a few years.  One of my (exceedingly) few "girly" pleasures.  I do like the natural soaps still.  I just put in a $30 order to Chagrin Valley for a half dozen of their sample size bars.  I really love their lavender oatmeal spice, but that's more of a winter scent, so I'm looking for something good for the summer.  I have a feeling I'm going to wind up really enjoying the cucumber lime yogurt, although the aloe bar may be my go-to consider how many times I've been sunburned already this season.  Right now I'm just using Axe Kilo body wash, which I love the scent of, but I want to get back to the more natural care products.  Why go to the trouble to eat primal but still put god knows what chemicals into my body through my skin?

For cologne, I'm a total geek and wear Star Trek Red Shirt (because tomorrow may never come).  I get tons of compliments on it, but I'm usually embarrassed to admit what it is...

I used the Old Spice Fiji (deodorant and bodywash) for years, but received a small bottle of the new Dove Men's shampoo 2-in-1 at Xmas and have used it since...I love the way it smells, but also it's the anti-dandruff kind and has impressed the living daylights out of me by having cleared up my acne.  I just lather up and use it everywhere.

Old spice deodorant (Matterhorn) for under the arms. In the shower I get really 'girly' and only use this (and a lufa, cause if your going to be 'girly' about it you may as well go the whole nine yards!);

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebodyshop.ca%2Fen%2Fimages%2Fpackshot%2Fproducts%2Flarge%2Fsatsuma-shower-gel_l.jpg&hash=299e3999d2263c0bd46c1539d71bb2a0fd6b5c82)
(I also use Peach and Sweet Lemon, but satsuma has the added benefit of acting as a mosquito repelent in spring/summer!)

It smells FANTASTIC. The scent doesn't really stay with you, but a little bit of matching shea butter on the hands finishes off that delicious scent. However I must say I've never experience the joyful awkwardness of having a female sniff me. Maybe i'm doing it wrong lol.

As far as shampoo/conditioner goes, I only use tresemme, because I have a sensitive scalp and all other brands cause my head to develop lesions... so that's not fun, nor attractive, so I stay with tresemme (sometimes head and shoulders).

I've used Old Spice Swagger, it was nice, and now I'm using Denali, also nice. The only scents I really enjoy are those I attain when shaving. I really like Vulfix Persian Musk shaving cream. I also have some tallow soap, Stirling Ozark Mountain. I like that too.

And am I the only man who really doesn't care for wingtips OR Bay Rum?

Since someone else mentioned it... I've been sniffed by women, but only when I used to used the Gillette canned goo for shaving. They seem to really enjoy it. I would love to find a scent to wear that women would smell me for, but I haven't found such a thing for me yet.

I don't like many fragrances. I don't like how artificial things like axe smell, and cologne makes me cry. I use whatever everybody else in the family is using, typically a sort of home made soap. I've been considering getting some lavender shaving soaps since I don't like the smell of shaving cream. I'm picky about stuff.

Every Man Jack has a citrus deodorant and they have some pretty good ingredients, too.

I don't really know about deodorants or stuff like that, I haven't tried that many different ones, but I definitely don't like the sweet, almost chewing-gum-ish smell that a lot of female deodorants have, it's like... hrrr. I don't want to smell like a walking piece of CANDY, lol!
I like a lot of smells, like coffee, fire, pine forests, fresh bread, etc. but those aren't quite 'body' smells, you know what I mean. I like more minty stuff too though.
I generally like men's smells better than women's, for some odd reason. I always have (but I'm sure liking 'male' smells isn't genetic, lol!), but I'm a bit cautious with experimenting and buying men's stuff, as I'm still in the closet :s

EDIT: TomThom, woody smell!? Sounds pretty neat! I have to check that one out some day!

For anyone who likes that spiced citrus smell, I recommend Neutrogena. Most of their bar soaps and body washes have that sort of smell to them and their products are great for your skin. I use Neutrogena Rainbath, it's pretty gender neutral as it's designed for men and women and it has that spicy citrus smell to it.

Not sure of any body wash that has a musk smell but Lacoste Red is a cologne made with white musk (white musk is synthetic and not made with animal gland excrement, yuck).

A few people have mentioned Old Spice's Wolfthorne, and I'm pretty big on that right now. The deodorant works very well, and I'm so sweaty, lol. I also bought that Wolfthorne cologne and it smells great.

Other than that I usually smell like an assortment of herbs, lol. I buy a lot of natural soaps and shampoos, and I don't use fabric softener or anything like that, you just really smell the essential oils on me. :P

Same here.  Perfume and cologne give me a headache.  I can't stand using lotion with smells in it either.  I wash with whatever bar soap happens to be in the shower, and I've never really noticed it making me smell like anything.  I've tried wearing smells before, but I always end up furiously trying to wash it off because it drives me crazy.  So for me, smelling good is smelling like nothing.  Although apparently I do smell like something, because somebody just asked me the other day if I was wearing cologne.  Weird.

That's great, you should tell them!  I've seen that kind in comic stores, as well as "Shirtless Kirk."  I've considered getting it for novelty, but because of above mentioned reasons I don't think I'd ever use it.

On a side note, I was going through all the stuff under my bathroom sink today and found a bottle of "Aramis" cologne I forgot I had bought. It's the scent that my dad (rip) always wore. If you want a sort of leathery musk smell that is completely masculine...no if, and's, or but's about it then that is one to try.

I loathe almost all scents, and a lot of them give me an instant headache that starts at the base of my skull (I suppose I have some sinuses there?). Some of the headaches are mild enough, but others are crippling. One cologne that used to be popular a few years ago smells exactly like bug spray to me and used to just HANG in the hallways at school for HOURS after the person had left. In a few seconds, I would get one of those extreme pounding headaches and be all but useless for the rest of the day. I thank the gods that the scent isn't so popular anymore. I never did find out what it was.

I hate the hand soap at my therapist's so much that I brought him a big refill bottle of something that doesn't bother me, but he hasn't used my stuff yet, and it's been at least a year. Someone else, a husband-and-wife team, owns the building, and, I suppose stocks the bathroom. I have been going to his new office for a year and a half, and I've had it. I'm going to start bringing my own hand soap.

Every single man I've had a relationship with has gone au naturel with regard to scents. They would all use an unobtrusive soap and shampoo, and leave it at that. Good thing, too, or I never would have jumped in the sack with them or even given them a second look. If I can't smell what they really smell like, if a man eliminates his scent or puts something over it, game over. I can only be with guys who smell compatible.

My ex didn't use anything, of course. One day, he was sitting at school, talking to one of his classmates, I think a middle-aged gal who had gone back to school. At one point, she suddenly leaned in and commented on how good he smelled. I suppose they were genetically compatible. I suspect that she would have been all over him if he'd made a move in her direction.

One reason my ex did dishes and I did laundry was so that I could sniff his used t-shirts. Sometimes I would just grab a couple and bury my nose in them and have an "oh, god" moment. Oddly enough, that's one of the little things I miss most about the relationship.

So, yeah...I like what nature already provides.

Heh, I'm not about to go to a store and sample everything just to find out what it is, so maybe you have cleared up the mystery. You know, I can always manage with one of the little allergy headaches, but that scent was deadly and would destroy my whole day. The first time I smelled it was in the halls of my building, and I actually thought that Physical Plant Services had been fumigating! I thought, "Thank god they don't do that very often." I was thinking maybe once a year. How wrong I was!

P.S. That sounds like a great brand name: Choking Goat Patchouli Body Spray.

I usually either smell like my deodorant (when I'm dirty but what to conceal it), or like sweat (when I forget to conceal it), or like nothing specific (when I'm clean).
I like the 'clean' smell most, it's not entirely 'nothing' though but you'd only smell it if you'd press your nose onto my skin, which isn't a normal thing to happen, gladly. XD
Because of my dreads I have to use a shampoo that is low in soap residue (which can be translated to softeners, scents, additives that don't belong in soap), because the dreads would otherwise suck that up and become yucky and mushy from the inside. (and that's where some stories of dreads being dirty probably stem from, because if that happens they can start to grow mildew which is really, really gross)
But that soap doesn't have any scent that sticks for longer than a minute, so always when I've just had a bath I smell like... clean-ness, sorta, lol.

But I still prefer deodorant smell over sweat smell, just saying. ;)

And Arch, why the heck would someone WANT to wear a smell which smells like pepper bug spray. That doesn't even smell REMOTELY nice!

I've been using Axe body wash for years, just got the new Apollo scent. And Old Spice deodorant always. Some of the women at work are always telling me how good I smell and ask what I'm wearing when I'm not wearing any cologne. Just great smelling body wash I guess.

Rarely wear cologne, the only bottle I have is a bottle of A&F Fierce that I've had for about 5 years. I love the smell but it can be a little overbearing. I like to smell nice but be subtle about it lol.

I actually like patchouli... but I don't douse myself in it because I'm not trying to hide weed smell.  It is legal here, so if I smoked, it wouldn't matter if anyone else could smell it.  Usually if it's on someone that strong it's because they're trying to hide weed... at least that is what I was told.  Could be a different story entirely.

Anyway, I make my own deodorant which doesn't smell like much right now, but I could add essential oils that are skin safe to it if I wanted, but since I like variety and don't want to make more than one batch of deodorant at a time, I usually just put a few drops of whatever essential oil I want to smell like in my conditioner (which is naturally unscented because it is honey).  It only leaves a faint smell unless you get your hair wet (or if you don't rinse it all the way out, which you don't have to).  I don't usually artificial scents because I get migraines and because they're just bad for you anyway, but I'm thinking about caving and buying some of the Old Spice Hawkridge deodorant and maybe body spray.  Everything I use works, but sometimes I just want to smell more manly.

I love the Apollo! Unfortunately, I bought the deodorant, and that was all they had at the time. If I'd realized it wasn't also an antiperspirant, I wouldn't have bought it. To use it, I need to use my leftover Degree antiperspirant underneath it, and that kinda messes with the smell. :/

I've been sweating like a mofo lately, from not even doing anything. My antiperspirant doesn't even last 24hrs anymore. I apply in the morning and in the evening just in case. I guess it's good news, meaning that my T is still rising (or, subsequently, my E and P are lowering), but I forgot how much it sucks to try to deal with this. It hasn't even been too hot here yet. Summer will definitely be a challenge...

This is one of the effects I wasn't expecting. That is, I expected more underarm sweat and wasn't surprised about the, uh, crotch sweat, but the all-over sweat was a complete surprise. Even in mild weather.

This is sort of gross, but my shorts are sometimes damp from the sweat. Fortunately, it doesn't soak through to my pants, but it's still disconcerting. Anybody else get that? I have no idea how to deal with it, so I just soldier on.

I don't like using it, but I do apply an unscented antiperspirant/deodorant during the warmer months because I really need it. But it was staining my shirts, so I started wearing classic V-necks instead of A-shirts. Of course, that's essentially two layers, so I get even warmer. Ugh.

But there doesn't seem to be any way to deal with general body sweat.

I've had full body sweats come on all of a sudden a few times so far and it was the first few weeks after I went from injecting every 10 to every 7 days. One time I was fresh out of the shower, took my shot, and went into the laundry room to get dressed. I came out of the room and asked my girl if it was really hot in the house or if it was just me (it was 65 degrees or so that day). She commented that I was really flushed and drenched in sweat.

Kinda concerned me because I was a little nauseated too but figured it was just from being so hot. Once I cooled off I was fine. Still not sure if it was a T related event or if it was a hot flash since I had my hysto a few months before.

i use axe excite or dark temptation for deodorant. they're scents that suit me, but nearly got me into a fight with my mom once. she saw me using my little brother's body spray once (excite), and told me she didn't think i should use any manly scent like that since it wouldn't suit me. and when i said i like the scent, the told me that i meant that i like men who smell like that (i prefer rather different scents on a man other than me). all i could say in the end was that i'd already used the scent for quite a while, and i could gather from the lack of comments from her at an earlier time that the scent really does suit me. i'm totally not out to her yet, she's not open minded enough for me to care about getting her approval before i do whatever i want with my own life.

anyway, my favorite scent is fresh out of the sauna, and no more extras than maybe what's left from some natural soap used in the hair and smelly areas. other than that, i like wood. especially juniper, but i don't think there are too many deodorants that smell like it.

Sounds like a hot flash, but I'm no expert. I mean, I had hot flashes and night sweats when I was doing the whole menopause thing, so I've experienced them; but it's possible that your phenomenon was due to something else.

I just run warm now.

Huh I've never experienced the 'whole body sweats' that you guys are describing. Sure I sweat when i'm working and stuff, and sometimes at night now that it's getting warm but I never just sweat. Odd! Just shows how different the effects of T can be across different people.

Definitely Old Spice I have used it all my life with no complaints.Scents differ on each individual though so experiment and see what is right for your body chemistry. Good Luck

I didn't really start sweating more until I was on T for quite some time--I think it was over a year. I started T in the month of February, and I didn't have unusual problems with sweating the following summer, but I did the spring and summer after.

I have always sweated like crazy, usually I would just quickly wash my armpits, etc. each day, but within a few hours I'd be sweaty again :/ I hate it, but can't help it.
Some people said I smell like a guy (which wasn't meant as a compliment, lol), I felt insulted and happy about it at the same time. XD (insulted because they were saying "You smell" happy because of the GUY part. Lol)
Though it's so odd. Sometimes I hardly sweat, and it smells like the devil, other times I'm all wet and it hardly has a smell at all. Weird body is weird.

not weird at all, fresh sweat doesn't smell. sauna or very hot baths are great for cleaning your body. i always sweat for 15-30min after, but i only need to wipe off the sweat under my arms, and there will be no smell. but if i go for a long time only sweating a little, smell will start to develop.

mmm I love good smells.

I have Fiji deodorant spray from Old Spice.  My room mate calls it pineapple spray.  I don't smell pineapple in particular, but its more tropical/fruity than musky or that typical "boy" axe type smell thats in everything.

Also, go to bath and bodyworks.  The CO bigelow or whatever its called has some good ones.  I love the white for soap (its got like mandarin orange and some other citrus type things goin on)  and the green one (cologne, shaving cream)  They also have a new line of their own mens stuff which I believe had a citrus one last time I was there.... I just got what I like though.  I know there was one that smelled just like lemons.

I love Bath and Body Works' new men's stuff. I've tried their Twilight Woods and Citron body washes and they're great. There are two downsides in my eyes though. One is that they cost in the neighborhood of $11 or $12, whereas the Dove body wash I'm using now is twice as big for a quarter of the price. The other is that the names don't describe the smell like the women's stuff does ('Cherry Blossom' smells like cherry blossoms, but what do twilight woods smell like?). :P

I just bought Old Spice...I think it's Denali(?) antiperspirant, as well as their Wolfthorn spray. The spray's alright. I like the smell, but it's not as strong as their Swagger I've gotten used to, more subtle. But the antiperspirant is AMAZING! I just got back from the gym, and my underarms were the only place I wasn't covered in sweat! :D Soooo glad I tried this stuff!

Haha yea truth.  They have some like that it the women's section like my sister got one for christmas called "paris" which I doubt smelled anything like paris.  Though I've never been, so who can say.  I do find they last me longer though.  I was going through those comparatively huge bottles of old spice body wash every couple months whereas one tube of the "good" stuff lasted me almost a year, so for me it was a money saver.  (trust me i'm very cheap =p)

There is a mild scent in my preferred deodorant, other than that, no smells for me. I have asthma and a lot of the nice smelling stuffs is bad for me, unfortunately. I was looking forward to finding my fave cologne, darn it! ò_ó

I use Dove's men's bar soap and love it. I think it smells really good and when you're on T the smell of mens stuff seems to stick to you more than pre-T at least in my experience. I use just regular Old Spice deodorant. I don't remember the name of it.

Not quite sure that I've had that experience myself, but I have noticed that I find masculine scents more appealing now than I did before T. Before I really didn't care for the smell of colognes or men's body wash really. They just seemed too strong or almost like they wouldn't smell right on me. Now they are a better fit with my body chemistry.

I have experienced the same thing, actually. and stuff that used to smell good on me now smells kinda funky.

Speaking of things that smell good, I love these hilariously stupid commercials.
