Seems to depend what country you are in among other things.

In Australia the Police suggested to a trans* club I used to be a member of, that you went to the toilet of the gender you were dressed as.

In the USA there seems to be a sex test to excrete waste matter for some reason

So local laws prevail.

I recall a couple of discussions on UK kink/fetish sites a while back and the general consensus was you go into the loo appropriate to how you're presenting yourself.

Therefore if you're en femme you use the Ladies.

I live and travel throughout most of the USA. My rule of thumb has always been to use the toilet of the gender I am dressed in. I do my business, and leave. I have never had an issue so far..... I hope this helps

In the USA I would say that it just depends upon my situation.   Like I would not use any bathroom at McDonalds because they are too high traffic.   Other places I look for the family bathrooms or the one seaters when I try and use the women's whenever possible.   I have seen women using the mens when they think the women's is too messy.   It depends also on how I am passing and if I am by myself or with others and how the others accept me.

When I'm dressed I prefer the women's restroom.

Actually there are very few countries that have specific law on toilet. Technically, men can enter women's, and vice versa, unless you explicitly threat others there. Those signs are just a kind of conventional rule.

While wearing skirts and heels, entering men's? It will cause a more fuss.

I see

If I am in female mode all dressed up I should use the women's toilets (as long as I pass)
If I am in mail mode all dressed up I should use the men's
It is good to know if I ever get the courage to leave the house cd-ing

I I'm in a good habit of keeping track of how much I drink when I am going out
So I never go in to them but there will be times where I have no choice

The law seems to be trans friendly if you are in the right place then
but are the people

Well, the safest thing if you're unsure is to only use "one-holers"-- single commode toilet with lockable doors. You often find these at fast food places and gas stations, for instance. In this case it probably won't matter to anyone which one you use. It wouldn't be a bad idea to scout out a few of these in advance of an outing just in case.

I've read dozens of versions of this thread, though and the consensus seems to be that if you are best off using the restroom designated for the gender you are presenting yourself as. If you're wearing makeup and a dress, you probably don't want to go to the men's room.

In the U.S. there are laws in California and Colorado (and probably other states) that protect transsexuals who use the bathroom of their true gender. For M2F it's recommended to wear a skirt or dress to avoid a fuss, but legally it isn't necessary.

I think it is more about passablity then presentation. I am on HRT so maybe I shouldn't be on this board and should not comment. I still use the men's room and I get systematically ma'amed. I don't know what to do as I have a small bladder and pee a lot. When I use the men's room I assume people think I'm just a very femme guy.
