Title: Discontinuing hormones before surgery
Post by: Dee92xoxo on June 05, 2013, 03:36:35 PM
Its almost time and I'm dreading it!! Idk what to expect. I have to stop taking spiro too. For all of 3 weeks!! I'm gonna be a hormonal mess! As it is, my T still isn't where it needs to be even after a year and a half. Now its gonna shoot back up again! Is it going to take another year to get back to what it is at now? Am i gonna pms for like 3 weeks? Who here has had to do this?

I have not had to do it for surgery, but there are many post-op comments about what this is like.  You might want to check out the Post-op board.

It is true that hormonal fluctuations can upset your routine.

I suggest your T levels will drop precipitously when your testicles are removed.

That sounds totally over the top to me for forehead surgery. I did two FFS surgeries, upper face and then lower face a year later with a little over 7 hours surgery each time.  In neither case did mine ask me to stop HRT beforehand but constriction "socks" were placed on my legs during and after the surgery and I was also given anti-coagulant before the surgery. It increase the levels of post surgery bruising but does significantly decrease the risk of DVT.

Interestingly, because of the bruising issue, I requested not to use the anti-coagulant for my second operation and two weeks after the surgery I experienced a small thrombosis in my wrist where the I.V. had been placed. It was mostly a scrare as the vein really swelled up but I still ended up in the emergency service of the local hospital.

However, at the end of the day, it is the surgeon who makes the rules...
Best of luck.
Donna

I'm in process of it right now, and had a migraine all of yesterday. I don't understand the thinking behind it but as Donna said, the surgeon makes the rules since it's their license at risk if somebody dies after a preventable complication.
