Post by: katia on June 07, 2007, 07:40:01 PM
have you ever written or thought of writing a letter to yourself?  what would you tell yourself?

I actually did this before, hehe. There's this website (http://www.futureme.org/ (http://www.futureme.org/)) where you can send yourself (or anyone for that matter) an email in the future at whatever date you want. At the time I was in my usual depression about what I was going through. I sent myself a letter explaining my current situation and what I need to do if I hadn't done it yet. I knew I needed to transition, but I was still too nervous, scared, self-conscience, etc. so I told myself that if, by the time I had received the email, I hadn't done it yet and was still feeling the same then I would make myself do it. Well, I got the email on the exact day I set it for and it gave me some encouragement and a few months later I finally started transition.

I had actually totally forgotten about that until I saw this post, how funny

If I could send past me a letter it would say:

Dear Sir:

Yes, I said Sir. And you know it. Wake up and smell the coffee and get yourself to a gender therapist. If you wait another 20 years, you will go through that much more pain trying to figure yourself out. You will develop a more female figure and hate it. You will gain weight, which will make your figure more female. You will have to have a surgery that is more invasive than if you had it now. You will ruin relationships without knowing why and get into the wrong kind of relationships.

Get on with it. Transitioning now will save you a lot of trouble.

Love,

Dennis (future you)

Being able to send a letter to one's past self would be much more useful. Mine would tell me that my gender issues aren't going to going away and that doing something about them sooner rather than later would be a good thing. I'd also include a list of horse race winners so that I could fund surgery.

Mine would be very simple.  "Stop worrying about what other people think, and give yourself permission to make mistakes."  Instructions beyond that would not have made sense to me.

I agree with the 'past letter' idea from my future self to let myself know that i shouldn't listen to closed minded teachers and psychologists...

Got to channel Miles Davis on this:

One of these days I'm going to call myself on the phone and tell myself to shut up.

If I were to have written a letter to myself in the past, it would have said:
why are you such a bonehead most of the time? Grow up already before you kill yourself!

If I were to write a letter to my future self currently, it would say:
Thought you were pretty smart, didn't you? Thought you had it all figured out you pompous ass. Why don't you climb down off of your soapbox long enough to listen to other people's opinions once in a while? Or at least shut up sometimes you stupid papagayo!!!!
