Title: Official name change
Post by: Jared on June 21, 2013, 04:17:35 PM
Hey everybody, I'm in the process of getting my name change legally, I already have my birth certificate changed and mails are coming to my new name. Next week I'm getting the ID and other papers.
When did you changed your name in transition? Were you on T or not? If yes, how long?

I had my name changed in 2002 pre everything. At the time I was 20 but passed for a guy that was about 16 or so and was binding. I did it to be able to find work comfortably and at the time it cost me $70 (in Colorado) so I had no reasons not to.

Congrats on getting yours changed! :)

I've been on T for about two years and I'm 5 months post op. I still have NOT gotten a name change. It costs $395 in California, so that was an issue, but I might qualify for a waiver and my sister has offered to pay it if I can't. I no longer have no reason, but I'm just so scared to fill out the papers and turn them in. I've never been in a court situation personally and I don't do well with authority figures or talking to strangers in general. The nerves are keeping me from trying... I hope to get this over with soon though. I just need help getting my butt in gear. I am definitely not a self motivator.

I got mine changed in April of this year in New Jersey. It was probably over $400 when said and done. The filing fee was $200, but then odds and ends fees was probably another $200. I was 14 months on T.

I'm doing my transitional steps in a strange order. I'm 15 months post-top surgery and pre-T, and I haven't yet changed my name. I'm waiting to see where my journey on T takes me; if I decide to legally change my gender markers, I will change my name then.

I think I was on T for about 8 or 9 months when it went through... we got a lawyer and all because I was also attempting a gender marker change.  It all went through fine.  It made sense for me to do it then.

Thanks Simon :)
All the best for you Wolfman to getting it done!
Originally I wanted to change it in the moment when all the papers are in my hand what I need to it, but I figured it would be smarter to wait until the end of college. While the name change doesn't require court it costs me $14. It's a huge difference in price, I wouldn't be able to pay as much as you did guys.

I'm just under 2 months on T and I'm waiting for Monday to roll around so that I can contact people and get the ball rolling for my name change. I was in the middle of moving from Michigan to Indiana and didn't want to deal with the frustration of trying to juggling everything all at once. On Monday I'm calling the court to see how much the fees are, since the website doesn't say. I'm also calling the local LGBT advocacy office to see what they have to say about name change in Indiana. I've never done anything like this before, so getting some feedback from the folks who know all about it will make me feel better.

I changed mine last year - I had been on T for about five months when I did.
