Bursting through the front door, Leo Waddell says a quick hello to his mum before racing up to his bedroom.

Home from school, his mind is buzzing with the important things that occupy a 12-year-old lad's thoughts... football, music, playing on his Xbox.

Except that Leo isn't a typical boy. In fact, physically, he's still exactly what he was the day he was born. A girl.

Back then, he was christened Lily by doting mum Hayley.

But at just 18 months, she reveals it was obvious her toddler daughter Lily wanted to be her little son Leo instead.

I love stories like this. It's always good that they push us to start early

I can't help but wonder how kids like Leo are going to shape the future as they get older.  I think things will work out well.

Didn't read the store because it would just make me bad about not starting early, but judging from the title, that's wonderful!  I'm jealous.

It's certainly a positive story.. But I'd be careful saying they've 'pushed' any one or any thing..

Cheers to Leo. I'm certainly jealous of him, I would wish to start early like that!

However, isn't transitioning too early bad for you? I remember hearing that you should wait until after puberty to avoid damage, but theoretically, doesn't starting HRT befoe puberty increase it's effects...?

he is just on hormone blockers till he is 16 or better. It just delays development till the proper decisions can be made.

Yes! Thank you! Thank you!

This is a heartwarming story from all aspects. Kudos to the parents for doing what they did and also for sharing the story with a tabloid newspaper.

Kudos also to the Mirror for publishing it and the reporter for writing such an article.

Richard Littlejohn, are you reading?
