Title: When to get FTM Top Surgery?
Post by: FlightyBrood on July 01, 2013, 02:38:47 PM
I feel like I am asking all sorts of stupid questions right now. I'm sorry if this is already answered somewhere, if it is point me that way and I'll get rid of this thread!

Basically, I've been dreaming of top surgery since I was barely thirteen, a good amount of years ago. (Just turned 21). I waited until I was 100% ready to start any hormone treatment (honestly wasn't sure if it was a phase or not, so I waited a few years and started dressing male at 16) and, it turns out there is a guy who does surgery literally down the street at the hospital.

I have only been on T nine months, and I know most people wait until after they have been on a year to get top surgery (and honestly if I made an appointment i can't imagine it would be for in the next month, hes probably hella busy) but why is that? When is an okay time to get the surgery? I looked around google and didn't find any timelines telling me when a good time to get it was.

Honestly, I think I can wait the three months, but I'm wondering if I can get it sooner, if I should take it?

There are guys who get surgery before T. There is no time limit on T to get it. If that is what you need to ease your dysphoria and make you feel more complete then the time is now.

You can get surgery whenever it feels right to you, doesn't matter how long on T you are.

Get top surgery whenever you're ready for it and have the money to do so.  If you fit both of those categories it might be worth getting the ball rolling now, because most places tend to have a bit of a wait for them.  Good luck.

The only thing is, some surgeons might require you to be on T, but many don't. Do it when you can as early as you can as long as you're comfortable.

Whenever you feel ready. I had top surgery...about two months after starting T and my results are fine. Scars are fading/not very stretched and my chest looks great. If you like the work this surgeon can do, go for it!

there's no need to be on T for a certian amount of time to get top surgery, unless your insurance is covering it and they require you be on it for a year

"When is an okay time to get surgery?"

When you feel ready. For some people top surgery is a big expense and prioritize testosterone since it's easier to make small costs every few months than one big lump sum. Some people find that binding is too much for them, and that top surgery is more important than testosterone.

There is no cookie-cutter timeline for how and when someone should transition.  If you can get your top surgery done as soon as possible and that's what you want, then go for it.  If not, then it's okay to wait.  Just work at your own pace.

Hiya,

I'm new here and this is my first post, so firstly can I just say Hello!!!! :)

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but it's something I've been wondering about.

With chest hair growth how does surgery affect it and does WHEN you have surgery affect how it grows. What I mean is if your chest grows hair it means you have a patch of hair on your chest, and if you have double incision you take two bits of skin that are someway apart and join them together. One bit might be hairier than the other, or it doesn't line up etc, etc, does this mean you'll see a line where the scar is with the hair growth being different above and below?

If so does it stay like that, or does it correct itself?

How would this affect hair growth if you had surgery pre T (or early on) and then grew hair on your nice new chest? How does your body work out where and how to grow the hair?

Thanks,

Steve
