Title: adams apple
Post by: oneprettywoman on July 22, 2013, 03:03:41 PM
I  just read an  old   post (here) on hiding your adams apple-  and  wanted to  comment.

One  can  detect    "A male to female transsexual"    by her  adams apple.

from  Wikipedia
The dam's apple (technically known as the laryngeal prominence) is a feature of the human neck and refers to the lump or protrusion that is formed by the angle of the thyroid cartilage surrounding the larynx.
The structure of the laryngeal prominence forms a bump under the skin. It is larger in adult men, in whom it is usually clearly visible and palpable. In women, the bump is much less visible and is hardly perceived on the upper edge of the thyroid cartilage.[1]
The meeting point of the two portions of the cartilage generally forms an acute angle (of about 90°) in men, while in women, an open arc (of about 120°).
---
Although both sexes have it, Adam's apple is considered a characteristic feature of adult men, because its size tends to increase considerably during puberty.[8]
Its development is considered a secondary sexual characteristic of males, that appears as a result of hormonal activity. Its level of development varies from individual and the widening of that area in the larynx can occur very suddenly and quickly.
The Adam's apple, in conjunction with the thyroid cartilage which forms it, helps to protect the walls and the frontal part of the larynx, including the vocal chords (which are located directly behind it).
Another function of the laryngeal protuberance is related to the deepening of the voice. During adolescence, the thyroid cartilage grows together with the larynx. Consequently, the laryngeal protrusion grows in size mainly in men. Together, a larger soundboard is made up in phonation apparatus, and, as a result, the man gets a deeper tone

Testosterone in a male  causes  two things  to occur  at the same  time?  a   large  protruding  adams  apple  and a  masculine voice-  correlation  doesn't prove  causation  -  but  maybe  they are  related?

That indicates  to me  that if one were to  push his thumb  directly on the  adams  apple  for a few  minutes  at  a  time  over a period of  a  few  days,  the  cartilage  supporting  it    would  form hairline  tears,  as  the  adams  apple  moved  toward   the  rear  of the throat.  the adams  apple  would  stay  in its  new  position  , after the  cartilage  healed.   That would  change the  tension of the vocal cords    and  shape of the voice box- probably  creating a more feminine voice??
a  more  detailed  study of  the  structure  would  indicate  the  outcome.

Do you watch television?  If you pay attention many (and I mean many) women have protruding adam's apples.

You can't always tell a TS person by looking at their throat.

Whether or not women have them, this is what people think. I remember when I was 18 this guy asking me how I was going to hide my adam's apple. Easy: I don't have one. I'm lucky. But people think Ann Coulter is trans because of it.

Mine's near invisible - it projects maybe 2-3mm out from the windpipe.
I do wonder if this has contributed to my vocal abilities? Like maybe it's easier for me 'cause my vocal cords are small? Joanna - can you confirm?

That people think Ann Coulter was born male? Sure.

The article on Ann Coulter is just plain sad. Whether anyone agrees with her or not, whether she is trans or not is really not the point. The derrogative names that she was called is definately offensive.

You are a pretty  girl!

I  would "assume"  that when you  were in puberty you had a  low  ratio  of  testosterone /  estrogen ( low  testosterone )  =  hence   not muscular, no deep voice,  little hair  growth on face.      And  your  adam  apple  did  not  protrude  as  is  typical for a male.

Other  then you, people here don't  seem to be interested in  discussion?
I need  to  try another   discussion group.

I wouldn't dream of attempting to perform potentially damaging laryngeal modifications on myself when there are many safer ways by physicians who are qualified and know what they are doing. Myself? I had a tracheal shave performed by a surgeon.

Pushing it up or whatever sounds dangerous. You do know pushing it in can kill you?

Safer  ways?
Cosmetic surgery to reduce the size of laryngeal prominence is called chondrolaryngoplasty (thyroid chondroplasty).[11] It is done mainly for trans women who have aesthetic motives. The risky surgical procedure, which usually is very expensive, may change the voice of the person, and various cases show that artificial alteration of Adam's apple by surgery can cause permanent and irreversible damage, including severe problems in vocal cords or thyroid sheets, hypertrophic visible and unsightly scars, breathing difficulties, swallowing problems, problems of speech abilities,[12][13] reduced frequencies while singing, and complications such as reactions to anesthesia, infections and other damage to surrounding areas such as the laryngeal nerve.
also
claims  that  Ann Coulter Looking like  a   Transsexual-  is  from  stupid  people  that don't understand  that the  growth of an adams  apple  has nothing to do  with weather  or not  one  has  a  penis  or  vagina.  Its  simply high  testosterone at  puberty  and  a  big one  grows  and  lower  levels  and  it doesn't grow.

Guilty as charged.

It was relatively cheap compared to everything else I had done. Any surgery has its risks.

I think I got lucky. I had no unwanted side-effects, not even a visible scar.

I don't have much of an Adam's Apple, and my natural voice is squeaky.  I trained myself in my teens to speak from my chest and resonate.  After a few decades, it is hard to stop!!

I don't really have much of an Adam's apple either and I thought I had a masculine voice but I've realized since I've started working on developing a feminine voice that I've never spoke from my chest which may explain why everybody always  asks me to speak up when I speak.  :)

You're kidding, right? It's hardly visible at all in your photos. Mine looked like I swallowed an industrial bolt.

Everyone was saying how small theirs was, I just figured I'd tack a different direction.

I'm a tad contrary at times...
