Title: My mom is well-meaning, but...
Post by: Shodan on August 02, 2013, 10:33:58 AM
I'm just going to cut & paste what she just emailed me.

QuoteWell, if you thought you were out of place, perhaps this is the explanation.

You are not alone! ;-)

I.... just have no words.

Wow.. I mean, just... wow.

For a leap of logic like that I'm almost sure you need wings.

I'm just so sorry.

Sorry I don't get it. What's the context?

Context is that she's comparing trans to a) Mental Illness in the case of Howard Hughes, or b) crazy irrational behavior because that's what clever people do. Because I'm clever so I'm whacky! ::)

Hey we're all eccentric to some degree.  Think of it that way.  Seriously though, I think your mom is probably looking for some justification and sees your intelligence as a reason for why you are "eccentric".  I guess she is trying to find a positive in her own way.  That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Personally, I wouldn't be offended by this. I'm eccentric and proud of it. While I don't think that eccentricity explains dysphoria away, it seems plausible to me that there is a correlation between eccentricity and the willingness to entertain transition.

I feel this way, in part, because I strongly suspect that those trans* people who address their issues, even to themselves, represent only the tip of the iceberg of those with gender dysphoric feelings.
