The one you can go back to time and time again and it feels as brilliant as it did the first time you heard it.
For me, I think my firm favourite will always be 'Hopes and Fears' by Keane. It's got a really magical feel to me that evokes all sorts of emotions. It's one of those albums I can see myself listening to in my old age. It's timeless.

Mine's The Offspring's Smash, I love that album! It always brings me back to being really young and rebellious. :)
Tied with Smash is Ani DiFranco's Not A Pretty Girl. I just love Ani and this album really hits things home.

This is a really tough question for me to answer are there are so many great albums out there. If I get asked this again tomorrow I might have a different answer for you.
But for today I will have to answer Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon.

Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Solid and integrated from start to finish, wide variety of sounds and styles, bitingly acerbic.

This is a difficult choice, but I would go with "Blizzard of Ozz" by Ozzy (or the Blizzard of Ozz band if you believe Bob Daisley's version of events). While the album has been played to death by me, there is nothing that has ever topped this masterpiece. My only complaint is that they didn't include the Bside tracks "You looking at me looking at you" and "You said it all"; however, they are released on the 30th anniversary and the 2002 reissues. On that note, if you have the 2002 reissues, please burn them. They are a disgrace to this work of art because they replaced Bob Daisely's bass tracks and Lee Kerslake's drums. The result was terrible audio wise and an insult to the late Randy Rhoads. If you don't have it, please get this album (the proper version that is).
Amazing album. I wish more people gave them more credit.
I love Dark Side, but my favorite Floyd album is between "Animals" and "Wish you were here".

When I buy off of I-tunes I do buy whole albums because 9 times out of 10 there will be a song I like more than the one that got me interested in it to start with.

Ahh, Keane, nice choice. I never bought albums, so there's bound to be a handful of songs i have yet to hear from my favourite artists. I was making a list of artists i liked and i was gradually downloading their full albums. I was surprised to find 'hidden gems'. Unfortunately my external harddrive gave up, so i lost so much music. Nevertheless, i doubt i could narrow down to one song, let alone one album.

This is an amazing post. I'm not sure about the beach boys, but the rest are all very strong albums even though this wouldn't make up my top ten. However, I'd rather have Tarkus for ELP and Houses of the Holy for Zeppelin.

I've noticed a lot of people on this forum have a taste for old school music. Is there a reason for that? Am I not cool because I like modern music? D:

Liking new music does not make you uncool! I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the "album" focus is what's prompting the nostalgia trip. IMHO, what these albums have in common that many contemporary "music collections" don't is a thoroughgoing sense of flow and a length conducive to listening end-to-end. I've always felt that the extended length of the CD undermined the album as a integrated whole. Personally, more than 50 minutes and I find end-to-end uninterrupted focus difficult (ADHD).

Dreams your not uncool at all, everyone has different taste in music. I am showing my age with the music I like. I grew up in the 70's and early 80's and this is what I still listen to for the most part. I do have some newer groups that I just love. It's just that I don't know how well their albums will stand the test of time, While the ones I listed have had heavy play time for many years. And I still enjoy them.

Solar Fire - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
With the Beatles - The Beatles
In Rock - Deep Purple (not a dull moment)
much less well known but better than Made in Japan:

both by Deep Purple

Boston - Boston. It got me though two semesters of calculus and one of differential equations. I'd listen to it over and over, the entire time I was studying. I managed to wear out two tapes. Did have a hard time taking tests without the music though. ??? Every song is good. ;D
Another would be Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
For something more recent although not in my top 10 or so, I like Kelly Clarkson - Greatest Hits Chapter One. Nice mix of tempos and good to dance too. Plus, It's got "Stronger" on it.

I'm drawn to this thread because of one word - 'album'! How I love and miss the album, that two-sided 35-45 minute journey through whatever landscape awaits. I still have several hundred of them at home and if I am feeling really down, one of my favourite fixes is to put on an album and feel the music. Ohhhhh....
As for my favourite album, Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run'. I never get tired of this. I cannot play the first notes of 'Thunder Road' without making it to the closing sounds of 'Jungleland'. There is always something new to discover.
I recently taught a high school workshop on writing personal narrative and our template for narrative structure was this last song. Over and over we listened to it, picking it apart, looking at what Springsteen was up to. At the end of the session, some kid walked up to me and said, 'You know, that was a pretty good song.'
Sometimes life is sweet!

Pink Floyd- "The Wall"
First album I ever bought. And that was back in 1980... I have bought a couple of thousand albums since then, but it's still the best.
Nothing but awesome front to back. Then I finally saw Roger Waters do it live. Best concert ever as well.

I really miss albums; when music really told a story.
The ArchAndroid, 2010. The most brilliant work of art I've ever listened too.

Sorry, can't decide.

Pink Floyd — Wish You Were Here
Iron Maiden — Brave New World

Nice list! Now I have to go pop in some UFO. I love Michael Schenker. I'm sorry to have had the displeasure of meeting him in person though- he was a total d-bag but signed my UFO ticket stub backstage anyway. I got to see him play "Doctor Doctor" last year with Carmine Appice last year. Sooo tasty...

The one I have listened to most is Inferno by Motorhead... the first 3 songs are so fast an loud :3 I suppose that would be my favourite of all time.
My favourite right now would probably be Super Collider by Megadeth. It's far from their best album but there's a few very good songs on it!

It's way too hard to narrow it to just one, so here's a few.
The Cure - Disintegration
Thursday - War All the Time
Daft Punk - Discovery
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Sigur Ros - ()
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

My all time favorite album is ANNIHILATOR's "ALICE IN HELL". It came out in 1989, and it was jsut hard and thrashy like Metallica and the vocalist was just great and there was an excellent instrumental called "SCHIZOS ARE NEVER ALONE".

I love both. I'd have to agree that Wish You Were Here has superior songs, but Dark Side has phenomenal pacing, progression, and integration. The whole is more than the sum of its parts.

I, too, fall into the 'love both' camp, and agree with the points above. 'Wish' does offer amazing songs, while 'Moon' is an extraordinary example of a whole that is much more than the sum of it's parts. If, however, the human heart of Pink Floyd was ever made available to the listening public, I would suggest it's in the vinyl grooves of 'Wish You Were Here'. At the end of the day, then, 'Wish' gets my vote.
Now I'm going to hurry over to the 'What made you happy today' thread and post: 'The 'Dark Side' vs 'Wish You Were Here' commentary' in the 'Favourite Album' thread!'

Pink Floyd- "The Wall"
First album I ever bought. And that was back in 1980... I have bought a couple of thousand albums since then, but it's still the best.
Nothing but awesome front to back. Then I finally saw Roger Waters do it live. Best concert ever as well.

I haven't seen the the live show, but I remember watching the film on video at home one winter evening 20-odd years ago and acutely feeling being inside my own wall of projected malehood and finding myself in tears. Of course, I couldn't bring myself to do anything about it and here I am at last.
Just last week I was singing is there anybody out there at karaoke (lol) and it all came back and I started crying again. It's very powerful music anyway, but once you start attaching powerful emotions of your own to that...ooh away you go :D
I recently read Pigs Might Fly, a 'biography' of the band, and it was really good.

I've noticed a lot of people on this forum have a taste for old school music. Is there a reason for that? Am I not cool because I like modern music? D:
I like modern music (though I hated most of the 90s and early 2000s). My favorite modern album (as of right.... now...) is Heartthrob by Tegan & Sara.
I think for a very long time I eschewed current music because I didn't fit in with the people who listened to current music. (It didn't help that there was a lot of crap my peers listened to).
Also on my favorite albums list has to be Sir Georg Solti & The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Tchaikovski 1812, Romeo & Juliet, and Nutcracker Suite (of which Romeo & Juliet is my favorite)... so there you go - I can be non conformist in music... those are my roots. ;D

All time would have to be something by the Levellers, not that I can pick. Probably Levelling the Land just because that album reminds me most of the person who I started listening to them because of.
Recently Woodkid's The Golden Age though, that stuff just gives me the chills and so many emotions.

Probably
Discovery by Daft Punk.
The sampling techniques and synths they used literally defined a genre and shaped electronic music to be what it is today.
As countless other artists have done for other genres.

Probably all of Gorillaz albums are my favourites. There's just something about Damon's voice and how Gorillaz doesn't just stick to one genre. Every album seemed to have a different overall style.
Gorillaz first self titled album was really indie and dub sounding. Demon Days was more radio friendly in a way that reached more mainstream but they didn't sacrifice good music for mainstream popularity; it was an incredible album. Plastic Beach was an electronic, pop album that had a lot of 80's vibe. It's probably my favourite out of the bunch but I like them all for different reasons. Their latest album (well, the last album that came out.. this was in 2012 I think), The Fall was another indie album that had a country vibe to it. It wasn't as mainstream as the other ones and is underrated. Many overlook it because there isn't that one song that stands out.

My all time favorite album is ANNIHILATOR's "ALICE IN HELL". It came out in 1989, and it was jsut hard and thrashy like Metallica and the vocalist was just great and there was an excellent instrumental called "SCHIZOS ARE NEVER ALONE".
Damn! thats a freaking great album/ band that no one remembers \m/

OMG, first album I ever bought. (1980- yes, I'm that old... LOL) Still my favorite album ever. It made me cry my eyes out sometimes, but lately more often because of my own wall that I failed to recognize until it actually fell down.
My favorite cover song to play of all time is "In The Flesh" Sometimes I can make myself cry when I do it just right.

Jill I know what you mean about being old. My first album that I actually ever owned was J Geils Freezeframe and was an actual album. I played it until it was worn out. One of my favorite concerts I have ever been to was kid Rock in Mansfield MA. He brought out Peter Wolf and they sang Centerfold together. I was with my then ten year old son and I cried watching him sing along with them. I wouldn't trade that memory for anything.

i built a wall around me. with me it's part of my mental issues, which i suspect/fear go way beyond aspergers, because i know i am on a constant downhill slide and that i am now constantly feeling threatened by everyone and constantly irritated. My favorite album is Watch by Manfred Mann. Favorite song on it? Either Drowning On Dry Land or Chicago Institute, but i think that Circles (the opening track) has the best lyrics of that album. What really affected me without anyone uttering a single word was "Watermelon In Easter Hay" off Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage concept album. It's the second-to-last song on there and was a concert staple for all following tours, but only a few versions reached the same emotional level. Exceptions include: Eppelheim 1978 (very early version with Terry Bozzio on drums giving it a different, more spartanic feel by not overplaying like that idi** Coliauta IMO, even though even that guy couldn't ruin this song) NYC Halloween 1978 (duet with violonist), Ritz 1981 (once one gets past the messed-up intro) and Barcelona 1988

Like others in this thread, I can't think of one particular album that is my absolute favorite, so instead I will list a few that I really enjoy and give a few of the reasons why I enjoy them.
Frank Zappa - Civilization Phaze III. It's a concept album that in terms of style lies somewhere in-between electronic music and avant-garde classical music, all composed on the Synclavier (a synthesizer/sequencer used by several musicians in the 80s and 90s). There are also some world music influences (Tuvan throat singing and Asian-sounding plucked strings on the second disc) and a whole lot of spoken word dialogue interspersed between the actual musical tracks (after all, it is a concept album). It's not an easy listen, and it's definitely for those who want to hear complicated music, but if you are already a fan of Frank Zappa, there's a chance you will enjoy this one (unless you specifically dislike synthesizer-based music).
Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind. It's a double album (two discs), and according to Wikipedia it was intended to function as a "soundtrack for a non-existent film." If you are not familiar with Swans, they are an experimental group whose music ranges from minimalistic no-wave sounds to post-rock to just plain weirdness. This album encompasses all of that, but does a particularly good job at showing off the band's weirder side. A few of the tracks on the second disc of the album were genuinely scary for me to listen to (which is a good thing, since I keep coming back to these tracks to experience the fear).
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral. Another great concept album. It is on the depressive side, but in terms of sound it is really interesting to explore, from the 5/4 time signature on "March of the Pigs" to the machine-gun-like noises on "Reptile". And Trent Reznor was apparently heavily influenced by David Bowie while making this album (he took ideas from Low and also subconsciously took some ideas from "Crystal Japan" while composing "A Warm Place".
The Residents - Not Available. This is once again an album that could be considered a concept album (I think I really do have a thing for concept albums). I think I like this album just because it's so bizarre. There are moments that sound beautiful, and then I hear the shriek of "ship's goin' down!".
Y Kant Tori Read (Self-Titled Album). I like Tori Amos, and this is my favorite album of hers. Not that I dislike her piano playing or her experimental works, but no album blew my mind as much as this one. There are some seriously groovy bass lines and great synth sounds (I'm a sucker for 80s synths, no matter how dated they may seem), and they work great with her voice.
Yanni - Heart of Midnight. This actually is not really an album but a soundtrack to a movie from 1989. If you like dark music and 80s sounds, this is a great album. Also, if you think of Yanni and think of "cheesy New Age music" that would be best accompanied by a slideshow of waterfalls and nature imagery, think again. This is something totally different and shows that Yanni really can do much more and is quite skilled at creating horrific and suspenseful moments. On a similar note, I love the Twin Peaks soundtrack (Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch).
Autechre - Confield. Electronic music that all seems to have a weird, awkward beat, but is strangely hypnotizing. This is an album that you just have to listen, and you will probably either love it or hate it.
ICP - The Great Milenko. I don't consider myself a juggalo, but I have to hand it to Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope for their creativity an ability to create a whole cult following around their music. It doesn't hurt that they do have some nice production and catchy beats and actually are pretty funny sometimes.
AxCx - Picnic of Love. A notorious grindcore band made this album. Except this album isn't grindcore at all. It's basically soft, folk-influenced acoustic guitar music with hilarious, saccharite falsetto singing.
Anyway, that's all I can think of for now. Like others in this thread, I really enjoy The Dark Side of the Moon and am amazed at how well it flows together. It's an album that, to me, doesn't sound dated at all. The Beach Boys are also excellent and I think more people should listen to them and explore their discography (they are much, much more than a bunch of guys singing about surfing and cars).

some more contenders:
A Day At The Races - Queen (i prefer it to its more successfull cousin, A Night At The Opera)
Live Killers - Queen (overdubs, edits and weird quality issues aside, i love this album, but it really didn't need all that overdubbing and editing, i heard some tapes from this tour which in excellent quality would've blown it out of the water, well except for that version of Brighton Rock, that one cannot be topped and by that i mean the long presumably unedited, unidentified jam section after the solo)
Long Live Rock N Roll (recently digitised my old record of this, a better album than i remembered it being, no clunkers on here, all good) - Rainbow
Live In Munich 1977 - Rainbow (why get On Stage when this is the full deal, On Stage on steroids)
Black Masquerade (Duesseldorf 1995) - Rainbow (Ritchie and Doogie on fire!)
you're really breaking my balls here. it's like saying: "who's your favorite child?" to a parent. i just love music too much.

My music taste is all over the place and I love 80s music but the first thing that popped into my head is an album I never grow tired of and am listening to often and that's:
Blue Octobers Foiled
Well...I have all their stuff on my iPhone and I play it all constantly while at school but yeah Foiled was the first album I heard of theirs and I became a fan for life then and even more so after I saw a concert. I'm also a huge fan of Disturbed/Device.

I think my favorite album is Bossanova by the Pixies. I might would give a different answer on a different day or in a different mood, but I have loved that one since I was a kid.

and about Civ Phaze III, heard it once (rented it from the local library), loved it, can't find it for purchase anywhere. Frank's final masterpiece. I especially loved "Dio Fa" and the last two tracks ("Beat The Reaper" and "Waffenspiel")

Tough choice, for me it's between GNR's Appetite for Destruction, ACDC's Let There Be Rock, or Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance. I'd probably have to say ACDC gets the top nod, they just rock!>:D

oooooh excellent choice!
It actually took me a bit to figure out my all time favourite, and I still can't really decide so I had to flip a coin a few times..

The Silent Force from Within Temptation. Must've listened to it at least a couple of hundred times.
My favourite song from it would probably be this one, I've put it on repeat a fair few times:

Mine would definitely be We Don't Need To Whisper by Angels & Airwaves
I love their early music so much, my big brother really got me into them years ago and I haven't stopped listening to them since!
It's hard to pick a favourite song from the album but if I had to, it would have to be A Little's Enough, I just love that one so much. My favourite song from Angels and Airwaves is Secret Crowds but it's from a different album, I-Empire

Tool - Lateralus
A sound somewhere inbetween rock and metal. The whole album flows perfectly, album artwork and all. Its about a spiritual journey undertaken on a psychedelic trip. I really like the fibonacci sequences and religious/occult references made during the album. The best track on the album is "The Patient."

Seems like there are quite a few prog fans here! =D hey! If I'm just gonna choose one it would be Selling England by the Pound by Genesis because it changed my view of music completely, but there are a few more, haha
Trespass - Genesis
A Saucerful of Secrets - Pink Floyd
Queen II - Queen
Close to the Edge - Yes
Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
Trilogy - ELP
Zooma - John Paul Jones
Phaedra - Tangerine Dream
Just a few of them. Very few.

Bjork - debut
That album was transformative for me, and helped me embrace being different.
Lately, I have been really enjoying a lot of the music where edm artists are teaming up with vocalists or rappers.

Number 10 - Greatful Dead - American Beauty --- "I let out from Reno..."
Number 9 - Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited --- "Abe said where you want this killin' done...."
Number 8 - Lynyard Skynyrd - One More from the Road --- "What song is it you want to hear...."
Number 7 - Eagles - Greatest Hits --- "You can't hide those lyin eyes...."
Number 6 - John Cougar - American Fool --- "Hurt so good...."
Number 5 - Fleetwood Mac - Rumors --- "you make lovin' fun..."
Number 4 - Neil Young – Decade: The Very Best Of Neil Young (1966 - 1976) --- "Look out momma there's a white boat coming up the river...."
Number 3 - Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell --- "So now I'm praying for the end of time to hurry up and arrive...."
Number 2 - America - History - America's Greatest Hits --- the greatest make out music of the mid to late 70's
Number 1 - Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town --- the inspired follow-up to Born to Run that was delayed because of legal disputes between Springsteen and his manager.
I got to see most of these acts at one time or another.
My first rock concert in 1977 featured Skynyrd, Heart, Marshall Tucker, The Outlaws and a couple other groups. It was only a few months before the crash that killed Ronnie Van Zandt and some of the other members of Skynyrd. I also got to see America and Fleetwood Mac around the same time.
I have the Darkness album cover that I got signed by Bruce and every member of the E Street Band except for the big man Clarence Clemmons.

Powderfinger was not on Decade. An acoustic rendition was supposed to be released around that time on a cancelled album, but the song wasn't released until 1979 (Rust Never Sleeps).

Opps!
That will teach me to post in the middle of the night while under the influence of pain medication without looking at the actual album. Damn electronic music. I miss those days when you actually had to physically get up and walk over to your turntable and actually flip the album over to hear more music or look through your stack of albums to find the song you were wanting to hear......
