Title: Coming out to extended family?
Post by: bender on August 20, 2013, 02:32:17 PM
(Sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong place)
I have been looking for a job for a while, and i decided since i live in a very conservative state, i should get a legal name change first. So far i am only out to my therapist, my parents and people on the internet. i want to come out to most of my family before i change my name, i'm just not sure how i will do it. i'm thinking about either coming out to my nana first, and see how that goes, or having my parents tell everyone for me. the only problem is i don't think my parents are very supportive, it's been over a year since i cam out and they still think i'm just confused.
I know only i will ultimately know what the best option for me is, but any advice or stories about how you came out and how it went would be very much appreciated.

Here's some reading material while we wait for the other posters to show up with their experiences:

My name change came first, the newspaper told a few and they told the rest. I  never declared that I was changing anything, only answered questions and requested that it not be told to strangers.

I started with my mother and very close friends, and then progressed further with other family members based on how frequently I saw them.

Extended family and acquaintances I rarely if eve saw found out by Facebook and the gossip that followed.

I waited until after coming out en masse on Facebook to apply for my name change.
