Title: HrT and Blood Pressure
Post by: NikkiTheWife on August 21, 2013, 10:56:33 PM
Long time lurker, first time poster. Full disclosure, I am a ciswoman married to an MtF Trans person. I know there is a section for spouses but I have a question specifically regarding HrT so I hope I'm not offending anyone by posting here.

My partner had high blood pressure prior to starting HrT and her doctor told us that she might need baby aspirin after starting Hrt. Recently though she has experienced some really high blood pressure spikes that have me worried. She's currently taking regular aspirin and it seems like its not reducing her blood pressure as much as it should be, even combined with her regular blood pressure meds.

My question is whether or not anyone whose also on MtF HrT meds with a prior experience of high blood pressure has had similar experiences. If so, is there any other HrT meds that didn't affect blood pressure so much. Currently shes on daily Estradiol and Depo shots once every 3 months.

Again, sorry for posting here if I shouldn't have. I just worry about her and it seems like her doctors don't seem to have experienced patients with both serious high blood pressure problems and HrT related high blood pressure simultaneously.

Thanks for taking your time to read this - Nikki

ninja admin edit: no hormone dosages plz

It sounds like the physician isn't telling you all the information needed or managing the problem correctly. ASA (aka aspirin) is NOT a drug for blood pressure but reduces the risk of a certain kind of clotting event (although also increases bleeding risk from injuries and surgery).

Time for a second opinion.

It has been stated that estrogen therapy often has a positive effect on lessening hypertension.

For my hypertension I am on an ARB (Diovan), an ACE inhibitor (Lisinopril), a Beta Blocker (Cavedilol), a Calcium Channel Blocker (Amlodipine), and a vasodilator/smooth muscle relaxant (Hydralazine).

Aspirin has an anti-platelet effect and is an anti-inflammatory.

My blood pressure medications were compatible with the use of 17-beta estradiol patches.

See the doctor to discuss "spikes."  I have one friend who had similar "spikes," and it was found to be that she had a faulty cuff and BP home meter.

Getting her on the anti-androgen spironolactone may also be beneficial.
