Though some progress has been made in terms of gender and sexual equality in Maine, it's still not safe for many of the state's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents to walk public streets with the ones they love.
On Sunday, about 20 people from as far away as Bar Harbor and Portland gathered at Pickering Square to bring attention to that fact with the ninth annual "Walk With the One You Love" event.
