Title: Spiro with food?
Post by: Harlow on August 25, 2013, 06:17:43 PM

Quick question:
I've been taking my spiro on an empty stomach in the mornings. I am naturally not hungry in the morning, never have been. I never got upset stomach or any side effects that would make me think anything of it. Except that I noticed on the bottle it does say to take it with food, and I just read an article having to do with the hair growth side of it's use and it said better results when taken with food!
Does this really have anything to do with how effective it is??
And what about estradiol just in case? I'm fussy in the morning with my appetite, maybe I should be taking it with lunch??

it doesn't burn your stomach or anything xD
I know right?? That's why I was like whoa :o
I'm probably going to take it with food just to be on the safe side, but didn't see the warning label till now. I just read the directions which just said take one a day. First thing in the morning I wake up and get excited to take another days dose XD

There is a warning on the side of the label on my bottle of Spiro. It says " Take this medicine with a snack or small meal if stomach upset occurs".

Yeah I can confirm what Joelene says, that's been my experience of it, Spiro is irritating to mucosa membranes, if you've tried to swallow it dry you might find the dust from the pills burns your throat abit, in my cases it can cause a slight tummy ache if I take it alone.

Spiro is 100 percent more effective when taken with food. This is well established.

really? o.o considering today I experienced stomach ache from spiro for the first time... from now on i'll always take my spiro with food. thanks for writing this i had no idea
Your welcome. if you are on the max dose, it prolly won't have much of an effect either way other then helping digestion. but if you are on a lower dose and want to get the most out of your does, ALWAYS take with food.

my dr. told me that it doesn't really matter and that its fine if you take it without food.
personally i don't see any difference. i take it without food most of the time.

I don't mean to be a cow, but the full quote is more interesting..
QuoteThe effect of food on spironolactone absorption (two 100 mg ALDACTONE tablets) was assessed in a single-dose study of 9 healthy, drug-free volunteers. Food increased the bioavailability of unmetabolized spironolactone by almost 100%. The clinical importance of this finding is not known.

I can definitely attest to the effectiveness of spiro being increased with food. I've never heard of someone being on as low of a dose as I'm on. Most people are on doses 3X to 6X higher than mine. I knew this from the start. But having read the research about how food doubles the effectiveness of spiro, I've made sure since day 1 to take it with food no matter what. And taking it with food every day, even this tiniest of doses that I'm on was enough to keep my T levels down below 70.
So yeah... take it with food. It works.
I just take it immediately after lunch every day, and that's that.

If eating with spiro will make me look as gorgeous as you, I'll eat an entire buffet with my spiro XD!!!!
But I did think with the proteins and calcium and such and that cheese is pretty filling it's probably a good snack to take with it, without having to eat an entire meal ;)

Never took mine with food, I'm on about the lowest dose there is, and have negligible T now. Guess I'm just old!
Seriously though, your labs will be the thing that matters.

Hmmmm, I'm on a low dose of spiro and take it 2x a day. My morning dose I never take with food though the label says too, because I'm never hungry in the morning either? And I never get upset stomach or anything n figured it works cuz I noticed the effects start at week two. However, knowing now its increased with food I'll now make it a point myself, to eat in the morning with it. Awesome post!
