a guy in my high school class used to talk about how he wanted to call his son dinosaur if he got one.

people in this area have nicknames. so many are not called their official name, my neighbor's just called "bror" (brother), i can never remember what his actual name is. my daughter uses and prefer the saami version of her official norwegian name.

How about religious names? Like "God" "Jesus" or "Moses"?
And how is "->-bleeped-<-" a name anyway?!? (or the others in the same list)

Well, there's always the jokers that named their kids Adolf Hitler Campbell, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell, and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell.

i've a feeling jesus christ would be banned in norway, but i know of a guy who was called something very similar. it annoys him a lot to know that his parents really did name him after jesus christ.

about strange names I once had a teacher from korea, he was called kho, whatever it mean in korea it means (cow) in my country which was abit strange to get used to,
a friend I once had also had a japanese teacher who was called something who in my country is a dirty word for vegina.

Religious names are usually done as an honor, though I don't agree with it. I see lot of people named Jesus, Mary, Joseph, etc., including Moses and Aaron.

Some people should just never become parents, imo. Giving a kid a name that will cause harassment and bullying throughout his entire life is just irresponsible!

I wouldn't name my kid Frodo, Sauron, Gandalf, Hermione (not sure if that is a normal name in the UK?), etc. either. If I wanted to name my kid after a book character I'd pick one with a sort-of normal name, or AT LEAST an not well known name. Naming your kid Sam (after Sam Wise Gamsee) would be completely fine, or Harry (after Harry Potter), etc. are perfectly normal names too. (heck, my dad's name is Harry! Lol :P)

Speaking of book names, a guy in my class had the nickname "Frodo" cause he was a lookalike, lol. (except for being tall, his face was just SPOT ON!). At some point everyone knew him as Frodo and didn't even know his real name, lol.

And do you guys know this transguy on YT named Echo? Anyway, I think his name is pretty neat, actually. Unusual, but neat.

When we picked our son's name, the rule was no prior family member and I wanted him to be his own person and nothing that could be short formed to something dumb and it had to sound good with the last name. We avoided celebrities and famous persons as much as possible.

Took a lot of effort to finally end up with Colin.

my daughter ended up with four names. her first name follows the naming tradition on my mother's side, and is used in my father's family as well. the second is found in my father, stepfather and mother's family trees, and her third name is in my father and step father's families. the fourth name is the one her father wanted her to have, but just didn't fit right. the meaning is right, so she should have it though.

she's still her own person, and nobody expects her to be anything like any of the people she shares her name with.

I have that fella Echo on my facebook, actually. His first name goes very well with his last. I get so annoyed when people have messed up names. What kinda 'parents' would do that to their kid? Meh.

Destiny, Chastity, Neveah, etc kinda sound like stripper names.
My favourite banned name is Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 (pronounced Albin).
One of my former friends in high school claimed she was going to name her future kid Hannibal Lector. Another former friend claimed, if he ever had a daughter, he would name her Arathelia (which I have probably spelt wrong).

There was a story a couple of years ago (possibly apocryphal) about a mother who wanted to name her daughter Chlamydia.

Many of the kids in the school I worked at were Latino, as NM has a large population of Latinos. I had kids named Jesus, Angel, and Gabriel. We used to quip that kids with these names always had the worst behavior. In my last class which was self-contained I had a kid named Jesus, though obviously being Latino the name is pronounced with an h sound, so I forgot about it. Then I'd write it on the board and the whole thing would sort of crack me up. Hopefully I kept that to myself!

Clown is a banned name?  I'm sorry, but that's a bit weird.  Even though it could have a negative connotation behind, that isn't always true and it certainly isn't offensive.  After all, clowns are supposed to be happy and entertaining. Perhaps "Pogo the clown" is offensive, but not clown.  I don't know. Not saying it's a good name, but I don't agree with banning names.

I don't care about people naming their children after religious figures.  Just because it's sacrilegious to some doesn't mean it is to everyone. 

By the way, has anyone tried to name their child after Pogo the clown?  After mentioning it, I imagined some really sick and disturbed parents out there.  Pogo T. Clown or something I suppose. Now that would be scary and tragic for the child.   

If your Muslim and live in an English speaking county Arshfaq (pronounced arshfuk) is not a good name for your son. ;D

And of course there's the recent court ruling by a Tennessee judge to force parents to change the name of their 7 month old son from Messiah to Martin (currently in appeal).
And I know someone who named his son Jihad (I always shake my head over that choice of name considering it's political connotations especially in recent world events).

While it's not an uncommon name in the Middle East from what I hear, and Jihad is a concept that's very misunderstood in the US, I don't think people should have to accommodate their name choices just to please people who will just be quick to make assumptions. In the current political situation, in some parts of the US, any name that sounds like it has Arab routes would get a bad reaction from people.

The home ec. teacher at my dad's school was named Tia Maria Martini.
There is a character in Baccano! named Jacuzzi Splot. There are some other weird names, but his is the worst.

I once knew a guy named Carrots. You're probably wondering whether he was a red-head or something. Nope, he's black. But his name wasn't Carrots's only eccentricity. One day, Carrots found a frilly lampshade discarded at the side of the road. He thought it'd make a very stylish hat, so he wore it to work every day for an entire summer.

And I once met an Afrikaans man named... Willie Kok. Having a conversation with him was very difficult; I couldn't keep my face straight, no matter how hard I tried. And then at the end of the conversation I had to shake his hand. 'Shaking hands with Willie Kok' sounds like a great euphemism...  ;D

(BTW, 'Kok' is Afrikaans for 'Cook'. What's so funny about meeting someone named William Cook?)

I do remember when I lived in Liverpool in the UK some dork named his son with the entire Liverpool football club players names, first and family names!!

It sort of started off: Ian St John John Smith Roger thingy - for 11 names finishing with gods name in Liverpool at that time, Bill Shankly (the manager of the team). I suppose they were lucky it wasn't a gridiron team!

I hear that practice is now banned in the UK.

You need to tread carefully though I remember one comment at work when someone was reading something and said  "How could any one name their child XXXX " To which the answer was from another colleague, that is what we named our daughter.

I remember when Ringo Star named his son Zac.  A comedian very publicly (I think at the London Palladium TV thingy for the Queen, if they still have them FTMDiaries?) said Ringo has so much money he just created a Zac to put it into to.

But Cecil was a popular male name, who would call their son Cecil now?

Her life was ruined because she was called Jordan? Really?? I mean, it's not the loveliest name in the world, but it's not the worst, either. If her life was ruined, then I can't help but wonder whether there wasn't something deeper that was really causing the damage. I mean, even if she was teased at school for her name, kids wouldn't do that to a Jordan who didn't seem vulnerable to begin with. Cruel little bastards - and bitches - kids!

Jordan is now a common female name. We never can tell where the pain comes from.

Sometimes we need to understand that people write journal articles etc to push out their feelings, and yet still protect them.

Truth is elusive.

One of the things I find fascinating is that people on this site are probably more honest and open with each other than they can ever be in society.

I can understand that and I try to move people away from that and to allow people to accept themselves. But we always forget that everyone has problems. We may be dealing with trans* issues, but everyone has struggles.

Sadly that is why the suicide rate for post op woman is higher than for pre op woman. The issues remain and they aren't between your legs.

Since you've mentioned old-fashioned names... back when I still used to use the ladies' changing rooms at the gym, I'd just finished showering & was pottering around near my locker putting my things away when a mother came in with a cute little son, somewhere around 2 years of age.

He was a delightful, inquisitive little boy who just wandered around the communal changing area, looking at things without being a nuisance, whilst his mum had a conversation with some other woman in there.

After a couple of minutes, the mum finished her conversation and was ready to leave, so she called her son back to her using these words:

"Come along then, Horace!"

It was just as well that I was stood in front of my locker, because I yanked open my locker door, shoved my head in there as if I was looking for something, and kept my reaction to myself.

I met Katie many years ago when I was involved in entertainment in the UK. A very confused and tragic lady from my memory.

I occasionally go and see what puddle she has plunged into.

A good example, and with sympathy, a young woman when I met her that thought glamour modelling was a way to escape.

do that. no need to keep a connection to someone you don't want to be connected to. i took my step father's name after my mom took it. one of the coolest names in this country, and it connects me to a rather nice family. it's also easy to keep track of my (step) relative, since this is the only family that uses this particular spelling. which is why i'll never type my last name here...

I have a daughter whose middle name has/is 3 digits.  She likes it.  Made the army ask weird questions though.

I worked, at one point, with some Chinese women. They would often take the name Tiffany in English speaking countries... because of the jewelry store. It's not a bad name, but it's weird when half the women you talked to are named that.

Speaking of Chinese names... it's not unheard of in China for a child to be given their traditional Chinese names, and then be given (or adopt) a Western-sounding name for doing business with us Westerners.

I had two Chinese colleagues named Apple Wan (you have to be a computer geek to appreciate that one); and Easter Lam.
