Title: avatars
Post by: anjaq on September 09, 2013, 07:27:25 AM
Hi. I like the forum and the structure. I have two suggestions though.
One is : Is it possible to have a "view new topics since your last visit" feature that only shows threads from a selected choice of subforums? I like that function but dont really want to have Polls or FtM stuff in the list as I am not that interested in those.
The other is, please check your avatars. I noticed that in the symbols category there are bad symbols in there like the "black sun" which is totally a NAZI symbolism and in Germany you can get even into trouble for that. I think such symbols are not really appropriate for a forum with this topic.

Thank you

Thank you for your question, and bringing your concerns about an avatar option to light.

I am not really sure which one you are talking about.  Is there some way you can further identify it?

Regarding some of the utilities in the "Simple Machines Forum" software ...

You do have the ability, in your profile options, to ignore users and ignore boards.

From your toolbar, place your cursor on "Profile" and from the dropdown menu, click on "Forum Profile."put your cursor on the orange-colored "Modify Profile" button.

From the new dropdown menu, you will see an "Ignore Boards" option.  Click on that, and from the new menu, select the boards you wish to ignore.

There is also an "Ignore Topics" option, but with the new forum software release, this seems to have a bug in it, and is not functional.

Thanks - the ignore board options seems to be what I am looking for.
Regarding the symbols - maybe its not a problem. They are not exclusively associated with NAZIism, but I would personally still not want them near me ;)
They are: https://www.susans.org/forums/avatars/Symbolism/SatanicBrokenS.png - and https://www.susans.org/forums/avatars/Symbolism/SchwarzeSonne-BlackSun-Sonnenrad.png
Explanations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sun_%28occult_symbol%29#Nazi_and_Neo-Nazi_significance

The sig rune is as far as I know prohibited in Germany in some instances (mainly if used twice which makes it the symbol of the SS), the black sun is not prohibited, but is widely used in Germany by neo NAZIs who are forbitten to use the swastika, so they use this one instead as it can be broken down into Swastikas and sig runes.

I dont mean to nitpick on this, but I was just a bit startled by seeing these symbols ;)

Let me apologize for not being as familiar with the avatar library as I should be.  My current avatar was made for me, as a present, by one of the other moderators.  I cherish it and have no intention of using another.

I do recognize both of those symbols as having National Socialist associations.  I will alert the Administrators of the issue.  I thank you for bringing this to our attention.  It is not nitpicking.

I tend to disagree here.

While I'm aware which cruelty was done by Hitler and his folowers, I never understood what good banishing symbols may do. I think, banishing symbols is fighting the symptoms. We should fight the core problem!

That said, the two mentioned symbols do have a connection to the nazis. As the Sieg-Rune is banished in Germany, it might be good to remove it from the selection of avatars. As the black sun is not banished in Germany and we have a long tradition of banishing bad symbols instead of fighting the problem... this symbol might stay in the collection.

QuoteDie Schwarze Sonne [...] ist in der Bundesrepublik nicht nach § 86a StGB verboten.
Translation: The black sun is not forbidden in Germany by § 86a StGB.
QuoteDie Sig-Rune ist in jeder Variation in Deutschland verboten.
Translation: The sig rune is forbidden in Germany regardless of variation.

Just to make that clear: I do not say that nazis didn't do any harm. I would never do that as it's quite obvious that they did very much harm, especially to the jews and disabled humans. Instead I think it would just be better to protect people instead of banishing symbols.

I just got back from the avatar library, there's twenty minutes I'll never get back! I had no idea that was even there!

I guess we all know what it is that you learned for the day.
