I'm absolutely certain it depends on the person, because all hormonal stuff varies by individual.
For me, I'd been on HRT just about 2.5 years when I had GRS, and as part of the surgical procedure the doctor sent my testicles to pathology. The report (which I got my hands on months later) stated that they were "normal sized, but nonfunctional." So I, at least, was permanently sterilized and castrated by even low-dose estrogen-only HRT. I wasn't even taking an anti-androgen; I never have!
(I also had to go off of HRT for three weeks before surgery, and had no real symptoms, aside from a couple of minor hot flashes.)

A doctor told you that, so you want to make sure by asking people who aren't doctors? OK, but my suggestion would be to seek a second opinion from a medical professional. Also, here is a reminder of our HRT posting policy:
8. The discussion of hormone replacement therapy(HRT) and it's medications are permitted, with the following limitations:
A. You may not advocate for or against a specific medication or combinations of medication for personal gain. This is strictly prohibited.
B. You may not discuss the means to acquire HRT medications without a prescription. The discussion of self medication without a doctors supervision is prohibited.
C. The discussion of recommended or actual dosages is strongly discouraged to prevent information obtained on this site from being used to self medicate.
We can not in good conscience condone the self administering of these medications. Not only may self medication be illegal, but HRT medications can cause serious health problems, and many have the potential for life-threatening side effects that can only be detected and prevented with proper medical supervision.
Hugs, Devlyn

A good place for finding scientific articles about hormones can be found at PubMed and MEDLINE. From what I have read, studies show that estrogen damages the testis. Anti androgens are less damaging to testicular structures than estrogen. Don't take my word for it. Do your own reading.

I can attest to it. Under extreme pressure from my spouse, I tried an ED pill this morning. After roughly 10 months on HRT, all it did was wake it up enough for it to stretch itself out and go back to sleep. So yes, castrated.
