Title: coming out to step son?

I've been out to my boyfriend for a while, and although he doesn't really understand or agree with my decision to transition (I'm not full time yet, currently in the process of laying the ground work, trying to get on hrt, trying to get my business going to the point I can fall back on it if things fall apart at work after I transition), he's trying to be supportive, one concern he did bring up though that I didn't know how to answer was what to tell his son(10 in December). It wasn't an issue for a while because his mom "forgot" to bring him home for a few weeks last time he went for a visit. So I thought I'd dodged the bullet, but a few days after school started up again, his mom dropped him off at our house, and my bf is going to court shortly for full custody, so we're probably going to have him living with us full time, so I'm back to hiding until we can figure out what to tell him or how. I'd be curious to how other people have handled telling children in that age range and how it turned out.
