Title: Right or Left Handed?
Post by: CourtneyAngelina on September 28, 2013, 04:10:18 PM
I have been reading a few articles that suggest being left handed is much more common in transgender individuals in comparison to the general population ( percentage wise of course ). Being left handed myself, this interests me, but I still have to question the validity of the article. So I guess one way to find out is to conduct a poll. If you have any thoughts on the matter please feel free to discuss :)

Haha, good one. What if you can see and do things both ways? I like having the best of both worlds. being in the right mind as you say, as well as right handed.

I'm right-handed, and that's what I voted, but I'm more ambidextrous than your average right-handed person. Like, I can't write like crap with my left hand, but there are many things I'm definitely able to do pretty well with my left hand. Like, if I'm cutting ingredients, I'll often switch hands because one is getting tired.

I do the same thing, but I can write with my left. Maybe not as neat as my right hand but I can still do it no problem. There are plenty of things i do better left handed than right. The wierd thing was, I didnt start doing things with my left hand until middle school.

Love it! I hope you don't mind if I steal that joke sometime :)

Hmm, so far it looks to be pretty close to 50-50. That is very interesting.... it's about 10-90 in the general population. Now of course this poll isn't scientific and it's been up less than a day... but still :P

I'm left handed. :) I was always told as a child I got it from my grandma.

Oh my this is starting to lean very heavily towards left handed. This surprises me to be honest, I thought it would be as far as 50-50, but not a greater majority.

I am horribly left-everything.  My right side is merely cosmetic.

Interesting results so far.  There is a Meyer-Briggs poll around here somewhere, the results there were tremendously skewed from the population-at-large.
I'm very uncoordinated with my right hand as well, the only thing I can operate with my right hand is a mouse and keyboard.  :P

Strangely none of my relatives to my knowledge ( with the exception of my brother ) are left handed. It's possible that way far back they were and it just skipped a generation though.

Archeologists and cultural anthropologists have looked at the "strikes" on the stone tools of primitive humans and determined that there were as many left-handed strikes as right-handed strikes.  That can be interpreted that primitive stone tool makers were ambidextrous, or there were as many lefties as righties.  But we know today that righties outnumber lefties by about 5:1.

So, why did Nature select against lefties?

(BTW: My father, 1 sister, and brother are lefties.  My mother, 1 sister, and me are righties.)

I don't think it was Nature as much as superstition.

From: http://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk/lh-info/myths.html

QuoteFor thousands of years, the Devil has been associated with the left hand in various ways and is normally portrayed as being left-handed in pictures and other images. In the seventeenth century it was thought that the Devil baptised his followers with his left-hand and there are many references in superstitions to the "left-hand side" being associated with evil. As an example, in France it was held that witches greet Satan "avec le bras gauche" or with the left hand. It is also considered that we can only see ghosts if we look over our left shoulder and that the Devil watches us over the left shoulder.

The Latin word sinister, meaning "left, on the left side", has come to have negative connotations.

We've been fighting an uphill battle for a long time, lol. I know a few people who were literally forced to learn to write with their right hand in school, by having their left hand tied behind them so they couldn't use it.

Hi,

One detail missed out here is being both left and right handed, see just to be different, fact is i am.

though it will depend on what is meant by left or right  handed people, does that mean only some things or any thing,

Okay try this , im an Archer, a bit lethal,   now because of a fall i had i needed to  change from right hand pull on the bow to left hand pull  most Archers are right hand pull. i can do ether, & still hit my mark. pulling is 35 to 45 lb's i can do 60 lb's though im working at it, left or right,

It was the school teachers who wacked us because we were useing our left hand not nature 1956 through , wacked & told off  did i like school......NOPE. sod them,

Don't worry I didn't forget you! :) The "ambidextrous" option means you are equally skilled with both hands :)

I voted ambidextrous. I write right hand, paint left hand, play squash with either (used to REALLY annoy opponents as they couldn't play to a backhand). Use a scalpel with either and simultaneously. Can't type with either!

You may find that lefties are becoming more common as they are not now beaten by teachers for writing with the 'wrong' hand. I remember that very well! christian brothers were happy to surgically remove the left hand without anesthetic if you wrote with it when I was a young girl.

This probably explains my ambidextrous ability rather than any innate ability!

Without being totally crass :embarrassed: What hand to you use to utilise toilet paper? :embarrassed:

I'm predominately right handed.. But there are many, many things I can do with either hand. Like Cindy, use a scalpel is one of them - although not on a human. I use them for boning poultry.

I'm ambidextrous, but I consider myself left-handed, since I tend to do things more with my left hand. And my right-handed hand-writing is rather hideous. Legible, but ugly.

I do most things with either hand except brushing my teeth.I have 2 computers running at the same time  use left hand on one mouse right hand on the other just reverse what fingers I use on the wheel and click.Still get confused by the keyboard though, always type on the wrong one!

I'm left handed.
Everything's made for right-handed people, though. Even pianos. :I
I used to play the piano a bit. The melodies are always played with the right-hand because the higher notes are on the right-hand side.

Where's the mixed handed option?
I may write with my left hand, but there's several things I do left handed, like I eat the left-handed European style, I play guitar left handed, and I hold my hockey stick on the right side, which is considered "normal" for left handed people. So not really ambidextrous, even though I can use a mouse with either hand, but my left handed handwriting is even worse than my already dismal right handed, but I am capable of using my left hand for something. Only bad thing is my right hand tends to get very cold at times; using a computer I'm OK, just switch mouse hand. But for writing, it's a lot tougher.

Just because you use both hands throughout the day doesn't mean you're not left-handed or right-handed.
I am left-handed, despite the fact that I rarely use my dominant hand except for writing.

If you have a dominant hand, it should be pretty obvious. Such as, my right-hand writing is actually much better than my left-hand writing. But it's really difficult for me to write with my right-hand and feels really weird.

If you don't have a dominant hand, then you would be ambidextrous.

I'm more adextrous because bad hand-eye coordination.
But I get what you're saying. I guess I'm right, both, left, and neither all at the same time.
I'm used to being a weirdo already.

The results of this poll lead me to believe that left handed people are more likely to answer this poll.  Either that or left handed people are really more likely to be trans.  I don't think that's likely.

I also believe that more lefties will respond. I'm also multi-handed, writing is the only thing I do with my left hand. My mum gave me left handed scissors, they were a pain as I used my right hand. I also write just fine with my right hand, but I prefer the left. So more of a leftie because of the writing I guess.

This is surprisingly interesting. I hope more members take part so we have a better sampling. Right now it's 14 right, 14 left and 9 ambidextrous. I have always been primarily left handed, though I'm somewhat ambidextrous with some things. For instance, I regularly switch my computer mouse from left to right to avoid carpel tunnel and such.

I've always suspected that transgender people probably have a lot of less realized special qualities. Nature doesn't let something happen without a reason. Left handedness is thought to correlate to a reversal of the more common brain-side usage. While the right brain is more intuitive in a right hander, the reverse would be true for a leftie. I don't know handedness fits into the TG situation, but it's interesting stuff.

I'm very right handed. I'd give up on transition right now, but my handwriting is really good so I must be a girl ;) (totally kidding :P of course!!)

I also use that tool often thought to be the bane of lefties everywhere.... a fountain pen.

I think my daughter is a lefty... she's 2, though. I'll be teaching her to write everything in mirror image.
