Title: What's in your purse
Post by: Lesley_Roberta on September 28, 2013, 09:34:32 PM
I have experienced threads where the guys like to chuckle about the junk they carry in their pockets.

Well I stopped keeping things in my pocket when I realized, the day will come when pockets are often just decorative, not to mention junk in them is not good for the form.

Today I might have the keys to my mom's place in my pocket, but that is it.

Now my purse is another story :)

Just bought a new one today also actually.

I have one that is just oodles of compartments. I won't bother trying to describe it, just settle for knowing, it has from front to back going through it in a straight line, something like 10 spots all zippered.

I keep a funny stash of things.
I have pouch section, it has a multi tool + a set of driver bits made for it. Plus a Swiss Champ edition pocket knife same spot. Plus a 3 piece folding 12 inch ruler (relic from my grandfather actually too from Scotland).
I have a second pouch beside it on the front, it carries my hygiene kit and emergency things ie band aids and flosser picks and Qtips (because I hate not having one when I need it). I have a key thingy and of course it has a mini multi tool on it as well as micro screw driver and I put one of my old army dogtags on it (always good to have near indestructible ID on your person).
I have a Nexus 7 pouch section. I carry it in a book looking cover all.
I also carry around a paper back because sometimes reading ebooks isn't good enough.
I have a mini notebook (things are always handy). And an eraser mate pen.
I carry around a comb (likely would be better off with a brush, but they are bigger).
Turfed my wallet today, the thing is just a space killer, and I can always stick bills in a zippered equal to a bill fold in a wallet anyway. All my coin is being kept in a front pouch section now.
Main central compartment has a nice side pouch sleeve to put my mp3 playing item into (a Sony PSP Go), I think they had cell phone in mind.
I also crammed my folded cloth grocery bag into the center.
I've usually got some hard candy sweets hidden somewhere in my purse, and I also keep ant acid tablets handy (nothing like heartburn to suc the fun out of a moment so I like to be ready.
Then there is lip balm. And matches. I don't smoke, but sometimes you just need a match eh.

I suppose the day will come when I need to sneak lipstick in there, and maybe if I end up with perfume again in travel size I might carry it again. My current option though doesn't travel.

I don't have a car remember, so if I go somewhere, it is either in my purse, or I don't have it.
It's taken a lot of shopping to find a purse that is nice looking, not overly luggage looking and able to actually hold this stuff :)
I used to need something to carry my Asus Transformer 10" tablet, but I have come to realize a 10" tablet is ok for at home, but the Nexus travels better.

Pretty much this! Even the tampon in case someone needs one, but I do keep panty liners also and do use those to control the little leakage when coughing, laughing or sneezing LOL

I also carry a small deodorant....strange cause I rarely sweat....but I do out of the blue sometimes, hence the reason! One other thing I have is a small folding knife, for safety and what ever else.....

Hmmm... So there's:

-My wallet
-My phone
-A hairbrush
-The pills I take during the day
-A little container with all the pills I take in case I leave without taking them
-Headphones
-Band-aids
-Tissues
-A pen
-A portable mirror
-My keys
-Hand sanitizer
-Lip balm
-Hand cream
-Hairpins and elastics
-A pocket book
-A "tongue" for putting on my shoes without flattening the back side
-My bus pass
-A USB key that I almost never use thanks to Dropbox

I used to carry an umbrella, too, but I lost it somewhere, and I keep forgetting to buy a new one. Luckily I haven't had the occasion to deeply regret it yet.

I can't even understand how anyone can live without a purse. I absolutely need that stuff. Especially the umbrella. I want to have one again.

I have a square small purse, a little wider than your hand and about the length of your hand in height, depth is about the length of an index finger. I get in all my id & credit cards, house & car key, lipstick & lip balm/gloss stick, money & eye glasses.

I have a fairly large purse so I have several smaller clutch sized ones inside of it along with my wallet.

One is for make up and has a couple of lipsticks (a pinkish one and a neutral brownish one), several different lip glosses, a mirror, some mascara, and a few other things.

One has a couple of key rings - one for the car and house keys, and the other for a bunch of other keys that I seldom use (such as my wife's car key, etc).

The last one - well it is sort of a catch all - right now I think it has a pair of earrings and a necklace that I took off for my last laser appointment and forgot in there, a couple of ink pens, and some other junk.

The only loose stuff would be my hair brush, my phone case, and probably some receipts from when I was out shopping the other day.  Although there may be some loose money in there; I have a bad habit of throwing it in there at the check out and forgetting about it.  Oh and a spare pair of glasses just in case since I'm blind as a bat without them. :)

I am just starting transition so I am beginning to familiarize with all the things.

It's incredible how the switch from male to female have doubled the bag-requirement.

It's like passing from Dos to Windows :) in the early days of computing. With DOS a
complete word processor (Lotus 1-2-3) fitted in two floppys (and one floppy contained
only printer drivers...).

::)

Apart from jokes my purse currently has:

wallet,
comb,
spare soft shoes (sometimes I try nice shoes but in emergency if my feet hurt
I change them especially returning home)
umbrella,
portable mirror,
lip gloss,
keys,
my letter from the psychologist which attests that I am in gender therapy
(just in case the police halts me and asks me why I am male in documents and
dressed as female...)

well, i don't have a purse yet, but I've used a fanny pack for a couple years now. that's almost as good, right?

in it, however, i keep:
*blood glucose meter
*insulin, syringes, and a needle clip(which allows me to legally and safely just toss clipped and therefore needleless syringes in the trash)
*alcohol swabs
*emergency candy(my sugar is tight so i have to worry about low sugar - much more immediately dangerous)
*wallet
*pocket knife
*pen
*medical alert information card
*allergy clinic card to electronically sign in for allergy shots
*keychain, although i don't have any keys... i keep my keychain sized store discount cards and a small multitool on it. and a tiny globe novelty keychain thing i got during the hospital stay i was diagnosed diabetic at - it was supposed to be for earth day, but i got it a day early; on my daughter's birthday. I keep it to remind myself that i could miss more of her birthdays if i don't take care of myself.

It's slowly changing over time, but right now:
*wallet
*pack of gum
*iPad
*three pens, in blue, black, and pink
*keys
*lipstick
*earbuds
*phone
*emergency power cord for phone
*spare change
*about six business cards with medical appointments on

I want to add a couple extra items - the carry letter when I get it; tissues; eyeliner/mascara. Then I'll be done!

Damned if I know. ;)

The stuff I *want* in there : wallet, keys, some medications (Advil, allergy, etc.), a Swiss Army knife, Kleenex, pantiliners and a tampon, pen, coupons, cell phone, and reading glasses.

About 20 minutes after I brought it home, I also accumulated so much random stuff there might be Jimmy Hoffa in there for all I know. I hear that's traditional, at least.

I've stubbornly refused to get a purse/handbag, I prefer backpacks, women handbags seem so silly to me, You want to stack everything as close to your centre of mass as possible and on an average human this is somewhere around your stomach I mean it's rocket Science 101 Moreover you can fit more miscellaneous guff in a backpack rather than a handbag.

Lets see.
- Earphones,
- Phone,
- Keys,
- Bike pump
- Umbrella
- Hair ties
- Razors
- Train pass
- Pen
- DVD (Grave of the fireflies)
- Hairbrush
- Spare medication (I often forget to take it in the morning)
- Bottle of water

== Wallet
= Cards
= ID
= Money

== Skincare
= Moisturizer
= Sunscreen
= Aloevera Gel
= Lavender Oil
= Foundation

I live in the UK where what you crazy, fun-loving Yanks call a purse we call a handbag. I have a smaller bag which holds my cash and cards which is a purse over here, Gods only know what word gets used on the left hand side of the pond (clutch).

I suppose there is some fun to be had from going all transatlantic and saying that I keep my purse within my purse, then we end up with one of those everything-bag situations.

I KNEW this thread was going to be fun :)

I don't carry a back pack, even though they hold more, well, it's a back pack eh, they simply don't 'look' attractive. Granted, if I am going visiting, I likely will have my laptop and that means a carry all which also holds an amazing array of techy things.

To me a back pack is for carrying clothing though.

I have looked into a lot of purse options though. You need one for those cargo moments, but, you also want something that doesn't scream out grocery bag. And it's not like I want to carry something that is ok for craft day. If it can hold your knitting, it is probably too big.

My new purse, fully crammed it is still middle of the middle size range. It's not small, but is still not at all big or anything. I sure wouldn't want it on an evening dress, but it looks fine for out and about shopping.

I have enjoyed making it plain it is a 'PURSE' though. Encountered an old friend that has been out of the loop recently. He asked about the long hair and the jewellery and my 'man bag'. I told him it was a purse and then told him I wasn't a guy. It led to a nice chat for about half an hour too. He has his own unique health aggros and I suspect he liked that I was able to talk freely with him and that his own troubles would not be laughed at or dismissed as funny.

I've enjoyed seeing some of the things you girls carry around with you.
I always felt put upon trying to get things into pockets. Always being burdened with jackets and needing them mostly for pockets and saddened when the warm weather returned, as it made the jacket a problem to wear.
I love my purses. I can ditch the jacket dependency and carry what I want. And not need to fret over how it impacts my appearance in my clothing.

Big magnet? and a laptop and a DS all in the same general proximity? Isn't that kinda impossible?

That bag though must weigh a ton. It sounds like you have more load than a soldier would be carrying.

I'm still crazy enough to change purses when I go out frequently, so I carry the minimums:

Touch up cosmetics (lipstick, concealer, powder)
Card purse (ID, credit cards)
Gerber multi-tool (hey, a girl's gotta be prepared... particularly a geeky one who is called on to fix computer issues at any moment)
Keys
Phone

Uhhhh... you kinda miss the point, dearest.

One: fashion. Having different handbags, purses, clutches, etc in different patterns and materials for different needs means that you can put together a look that says what you want it to when you want it to without having a jarring element. You may see it as frivolous but it's actually pretty handy to be able to put yourself together in a way that will demand the kind of recognition you want without having to work harder for it (professional, fun, flirty, casual, goofy, etc.)

Two: convenience. I can't walk around a store with a backpack on. It's also a good lesson in learning to make do with less. Packing everything including the kitchen sink in your bag is really wasting a lot of energy on carrying around stuff that you probably won't use that day. I've got a guy friend who does the utility bag thing like you do, he rarely uses all that stuff and he's a tech for a living.

Personally, being a geek girl doesn't mean that I wanna walk-around with a friggin utility belt nor does it mean that I want to be responsible for fixing something due to someone's lack of knowledge. I can sling anything that speaks machine code. Doesn't mean I wanna when I'm off the clock or not doodling around a personal project. Only time that I pack stuff like that is camping, actually doing field work, or on long distance drives (in case something weird happens.)

I don't have a whole lot:

- Pens / pencils
- Wallet
- Phone (usually)
- Hand cream (as of yesterday)
- Chapstick
- Keys (does it count if I clip them to my purse instead of dropping them in the bag?)

Well, in my case, it's favors for friends.  Better to have a tool on hand that I am comfortable with than to have to make an appointment later.  Besides, it's mostly a services-swap thing.  "Hey, I could totally replace your power supply and get your computer online this afternoon.  Coincidentally, you make fabulous cheesecake.  Did I mention I love cheesecake?" sort of thing... ;)
Title: Re: What's in your purse
Post by: Lesley_Roberta on September 30, 2013, 03:45:30 PM
Hehehe Victoria is on target.

While it is nice if you are going from point A to point B and the journey is measured in days not miles you might not mind something that qualifies as luggage. And I buy my purses at Bentley's which I suspect is more a luggage store than a purse retailer.

But the thing is, a purse is meant to accompany you while you are out shopping, not traveling. It's what you have with you when you get asked out to dinner, even if not out for a fancy one. If there is going to be dancing, and you are wearing a special rare moment dress, the backpack will simply be the wrongest possible item.

If I'm going to Ottawa to stay with family for a week, I will still have my purse, but, I might also have the carry all with the laptop. And it might be inside the suitcase with my clothes and my bathroom gear. And it is called luggage :)

A purse needs to be an accessory, it's not meant to be a cargo container.

I went out of my way to get a 10 inch Asus Transformer tablet because at the time, biggest screen was the objective. Today I have had to come to grips with the fact a lady's purse big enough to carry a 10 inch tablet is simply going to be too big for most nice outfits. Shopping maybe, a date unlikely and something fancy most assuredly not. So I carry my Nexus 7 as my on the go tablet. The 10 inch has become my model table TV (although I can use the laptop, I am occasionally working on it instead and thus watching video on the 10").

I used to carry around my Nintendo DSi XL as well, till I forced myself to get a grip. I never get around to playing with it when I am out and about. The games usually want to much focus. I have the Nexus for quick fun simple games now. Bigger screen too.

Girls are not forced to be delicate, but ideally you need to at least be able to turn it on and off easily :)
Backpacks are so totally high school kids in my opinion, or persons that don't mind the fact the thing seems to scream out 'this person is single, and looking this way probably will remain so' :)

Hey, what can I say, a backpack doesn't make you look very attractive. It's as bad as wearing a grubby hoody.
Fine if you have a multi destination day such as school and work combined for coping with carrying a change for work I suppose.

I am dying to see a day when I can wear a nice dress, and I don't think a backpack quite goes :)

But I see a lot of gals out there using cloth bags as well. easy enough to carry a lot of junk as it is a bag after all. But I like compartments. I don't want my things all just dumped on a one location bag.

I see a lot of people walk around and they appear to have no way to carry anything at all. I can't picture that though. But then again, I don't have a car, so if I am out there, well I won't have left it back in my car.

I'm looking forward to actually buying something more ostensibly fashionable and more in line with decorative.
I just hope I can also find places to go where having something like that is required.

Multi-tool, generic pain pills, matches, flint and steel, wire, 550-cord, knit hat, glove, thumb-drive, Nintendo DS XL with charger and lots of games, flashlight, batteries, lighter, dental floss, dental floss picks, written directions to various places I frequent, napkins, necklace, chapstick, ear-bud headphones, eyeglass cloth, band-aids, anti-itch cream, mints, rubber bands, bottle / paint can opener, and likely some other stuff that I forgot. That reminds me I need to add duct tape, super glue, a poncho, and a pen / paper.

I add stuff to my purse as needed or that I think might need or have used before then just leave it there. I find that eventually I end up needing something. I'm a firm believer in preparation.

let's see, I probablly have way too much stuff in mine

wallet
keys
cell phone
umbrella
sunglasses
makeup bag
mints
perfume
condoms and lube (just in case)
headphones
phone charger
my meds that I take later on in the day (morning ones tend to live at home unless I'm staying somewhere)
lip glosses
hairspray
deodorant
folding hairbrush/mirror
tide pen
jar of raw shea butter
hair elastics
bobby pins
headscarf/headband thing
lighter
measuring tape
and for some reason a usb drive that I have no idea what's on it or why it's in my purse

actually it's not as bad as I was expecting, probablly because I just bought this purse pretty recently and it hasn't had the chance to accumulate too much random stuff yet

That's what's in my usual day to day bag, if I'm going out dancing or to some nice evening event I'll carry a small purse or clutch with just the essentials in it
