Title: First gender-therapy appointment (finally)
Post by: Robin Mack on September 30, 2013, 01:05:00 PM
I just had my first appointment with my therapist.  I've known for more than a little bit where I am/what I am.  I believe I've known on a deep level all of my life.  Now I have a professional, medical opinion that I am, in fact, a woman.

My therapist commented that while I've been transitioning for a while, now "we're stepping on the gas".  I'm so excited!

I had no idea things would work out so well, or so quickly.  However, I will point out that she would *not* have made that determination in the first meeting if I hadn't already gone through significant therapy to get over past issues.  Starting out with a (relatively) clean slate was a big help here.

She says she expects that I'll have my letter by the end of December.  I am beyond stoked....

*happy dance*

Just had to share with you all!  :)

Robin, At this time, make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position. Please make sure your seat belt is correctly fastened. Hold on its going to be a bumpy ride. LOL!!!!!!!

So glad things are working out for you and you seem to feel you have a professional therapist that you can work with. Take each step with pride. When you feel overwhelmed (and you will) just take some time to breathe and keep looking inside and see that girl just waiting to be true.

Hugs

Thank you, Mind is Quiet Now.... your story as revealed by your posts is an inspiration to me.  I hope I achieve the same level of acceptance and serenity you seem to have attained. :)

My next appointment is in three weeks, and I can barely wait.  She doesn't do intensive therapy unless it's needed, and in my case she seems to believe that I have a level head on my shoulders and that once a month will be fine at least until the initial letter, then she will be working with me on legal paperwork, etc. as I need it.

Next appointment we'll work on strategy for coming out to my mother and my daughter with minimal trauma, and on legal issues related to my transition and custody.  She'll be drafting a letter explaining that my gender dysmorphia has no bearing on my ability to care for a child, etc.  After I come out to my daughter, I'm hoping to no longer dread having to be in "boy mode" when she is over for a visit.

It's doubly important that I come out to my daughter because she is asking to live with me full-time now, and I can't imagine trying to keep such a big part of me from her.  It would be very bad for us *both* at this point.  I want her being home again to be a joyous occasion, not a source of resentment on my part.

*hope, hope*

Congratulations!

I just started therapy a month ago. Isn't it a huge relief?

Yes... especially because I was afraid that my therapist would not believe me, or would tell me I had to wait for years because this may be just a mid-life crisis kind of thing.  It feels so good to be validated... and a little scary.  I admit there was a part of me that was kind of hoping she would say "Oh, there's no need to transition, you'll be fine without it.  No need to confuse and hurt your loved ones, no need to go through the journey ahead."  A very small part, granted, but a part of me nonetheless.

And thank you!  :)
