Title: BMI restrictions for T?
Post by: BrotherBen on October 15, 2013, 10:29:00 AM
Looks like I get to christen the new T board!

I just did the paperwork with my therapist to get my "letter of support" for HRT. I was just wondering, are there any weight or BMI restrictions for starting T? I'm waiting til after an unrelated surgery to try and start, so I haven't gone to see my hopefully-future-T-prescriber yet.

It might vary from doctor to doctor, country to country, patient to patient and so on, but I just read that one Finnish hospital unit has the BMI limit of 35.

Never heard of that, but since I am older my doctor was concerned about my cholesterol. But awesome thing, I have gotten my cholesterol down along with my weight. I think wanting to and being able to build up muscle has helped me a lot with over all health.

It probably varies depending on the doctor but T does incease the chance for higher blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes, higher chloresteral etc, so with a higher BMI where those risks are already greater, it's something to consider, which is why I want to lose weight before starting T.

Btw congrats on being the first post in the new T section.  You've just made history! :)

Jay,

Pre-T my doctor was also concerned about my cholesterol. Have my first cholesterol follow-up since starting testosterone so I'm hopeful for improvement with my cholesterol levels.

You mentioned losing weight... would you attribute the weight loss to a change and diet/ increase in exercise or do you think the testosterone played a role?

I've experienced noticeable weight loss since starting T on October 5th...wondering if it's related to HRT.

It's all attributable to improved diet and more exercise. I'm working with a personal trainer.
You could have weight loss though, it's not typical but I think that your metabolism changes.
