The Illinois House finally passed marriage equality legislation in a close vote. The Illinois Senate easily passed a concurrence vote on the amended bill. It will now go to the desk of Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature.

In a close 61-54 vote Tuesday, the Illinois House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 10, the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.

It is much better when these advances come about through a political process which carries with it the mandate of the people.

It is much better when these advances come about through a political process which carries with it the mandate of the people.

Of democracy Ben Franklin said:
"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote."

A right should not be put up for a vote.  A right should be self evident.  The civil rights law of 1964 was not put to a vote by the people, but written into the books based on its self evident existence.
