Title: MTF or FTM: What state were you born in?
Post by: Joules on November 28, 2013, 02:06:00 PM
I have noticed that certain states/regions seem to be better represented than others in terms of Susan's transgender population.  Some of them make sense, e.g., Michigan is well represented likely because of the prominence of U of M in studying Transgender.  Other states that seem well represented don't seem intuitively obvious as to why they are well represented, e.g., Oklahoma, where I was born.  Since the current reigning theory of the cause(s) of Transgender are a prenatal occurrence of some kind, the current physical dwelling of a TG person isn't significant, rather the place where they were born.

Hence I make this poll out of a curiosity if birth location is linked to TG.  I apologize to those who are here on Susan's for a situation that is not related to either a MTF or FTM issue, or for those who were born outside of the USA 50 states.  Even though it's not all inclusive, it may provide an interesting clue about birth location versus TG status.  And of course, the poll lacks the rigors of a proper scientific study.  Likely more Texans will answer because more people are born there than in Rhode Island, and it could be that people on the West Coast are more willing to answer polls compared to people on the East Coast.  All in all, it may hint at an interesting trend.

MTF born in California, a state that fortunately allows for birth certificates to be changed. So, I have an updated certified copy of mine stating that I was born female.

This. It's a lot easier than what it is in Michigan, Where I currently live. And then all my other documents have to change.

Ok, so there are a few I missed.  By rights I should also include some territories as well, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam.  Sigh, I had to draw the line somewhere, and I was getting weary of adding poll boxes...

All who desire can add their own location by doing a write-in here in the replies.  If there is a strong trend among such, I will amend the poll.

Picky, picky, picky.

HA!  The Canadians had their chance to join the United States.

In Article XI of the Articles of Confederation (the first constitution of the United States), stated:

Article XI. Canada [Province of Quebec] acceding to this confederation, and adjoining in the measures of the united States, shall be admitted into, and entitled to all the advantages of this union; but no other colony shall be admitted into the same, unless such admission be agreed to by nine States.

These Articles were in effect until 1789.

Given that, at the time, many Canadians were Tories who had left the nascent United States following the British defeat, and many others had fought against the American rebels, I can't say they made the wrong decision to decline the offer.

Little bump here, only 53 replies so far, WTF?  Susan's clearly has more TGs than that.  Cmon, what's the harm.  It's all completely anonymous if you wish, just don't leave a comment!

By the number of miffed comments, I realize that some took my non-inclusive approach personally.  Let me explain!  I'm thinking that root cause(s) of transgender occurrence may have a demographic explanation.  What piqued my curiosity is the prevalence of members from Oklahoma.  I see no reason why Oklahoma should be top heavy in TG presence, but I still remember the weird red earth of OK(high iron content)!  (No offense fellow Okies, I left there when I was 4 and have never seen earth like that since.)  I only needed a significant sampling of demographics but they need some consistent background features to reduce the variables being compared, and some limit on geographical sizing to give significant banding of the results.

So far, the results are too limited to find much significance in the numbers.  California is leading but that's not surprising by the size of the California population and Cali's progressive attitude regarding transgender.  Virginia and Wisconsin are surprises with leads that have no readily explainable features, but the overall sampling is too small for much statistical significance to the results so far.

Born in Knoxville, TN

They will not change gender marker on Birth Certificate and name change will have old name crossed out with new name  :(

I was almost born in Germany my father was stationed there when I was born. My mother wanted to wait till I was born before moving there for several years. I never grew up in TN and didn't live there until I was 18 till 28 when when to college there and later worked at a software company there. I grew up in Germany, NC, NJ and NY. I currently live in NJ so getting driver's license marker is relatively pain free compared to TN. Name change is easy to get, but the state recommends using a lawyer.

Hi Sydney,

We have the same birthday, July 21!  (Mine was a few years before yours but still...)

I've checked into Okla regs on birth cert. change, they require proof of SRS, so that may be a while for me yet.  Oregon (where I currently live) is just now relaxing some of their requirements on various changes, maybe there's hope that Tenn and Okla won't be far behind.  I got my very first DL in NJ, I couldn't do it until I turned 17.  That year from 16 to 17 seemed so very long.  Looking back, I'd gladly wait it out again if I could go back with all I know now!

Welcome to Susan's, thanks for participating in the poll.  See you around the site, feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Lucy, I've tried to hesplain this:

https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,154945.msg1299225.html#msg1299225

My idea is only to get a trend (or not) based on a sample that has some constraints, in order to limit the possible influence of other factors.  IF there seems to be a trend, I'll make another all-inclusive poll for the entire planet.  Not sure what to do for geographic limits, or if the poll feature here will allow that many entries.  Of course, there will always be those from other planets, saying "What about us?".  Sigh...

I was 15 when I moved from Charlotte, NC to Bergen County, NJ and was upset that I had to wait an additional year since NJ the minimum driving age is 17 instead of 16 in most states. 2 months before I turned 16 we moved to Orange County, NY (about 48 miles NW of Manhattan) where the minimum driving age was 16 (except for the Boroughs of NYC it's 18). I was happy about that. Ironically I could drive in NJ at 16 with a NY State license (the had some sort of agreement between the states), but I could not drive in NYC. So my first driver's license was in NY, 2nd in TN, and 3rd in NJ.

Sigh, my statistics professor would die laughing if I tried to draw any conclusions based on the numbers so far.  I'm afraid that it might be years before there are enough responses to be of much use.  I noticed that your Canadian poll has a very strong trend, or did last I looked.  I don't know enough of Canadian geography, territory sizes or population distribution to say for sure though.

I actually found it a bit reassuring that the US distribution was so even, despite the sample size.  It's the Canadian results that have me perplexed.  The massively disproportionate Ontario population base may be responsible for what we're seeing.  I would have expected to see more in BC and Quebec though.  One of the most active members in the past from Quebec seems to have vanished.

NO offence to anyone in ND.  I lived in Grand Forks for five years and am heading there tomorrow for the new year's holiday.  Go Sioux!

I was born in Houston, Texas at St. Joseph's Hospital. I am not your typical Texan, though. I don't have state pride. Texas is terribly dull to me. I've moved away twice. Once, to Washington in 2007; then I was in Oregon from May of last year to May of this year. I left WA for financial reasons, and I left Oregon because my house mate and I didn't get along in the end, and I didn't have any other options available to me. At this point I just accept that wherever I am is where I need to be until the opportunity arrives to leave again. I wouldn't mind leaving the country at some point, and move to Scandinavia. Just recently the US government increased the expatriation fee from $450 to $2350. Can you believe that crap? Land of the Fee, Home of the Slave.

Well, we continue to receive a trickle of responses.  I thank you all for your inputs.

There is still insufficient data to say that a clear trend or trends can be shown (or disproved).  It's not surprising that Cali is in the lead, due to it's size in terms of both land mass and population, as well as the progressive nature of its' culture.  By that same coin, it is surprising that Texas is so far down the list, having considerable size as well.  Similarly for Alaska, although its not as far behind in the polls nor has it the population.  And of course Rhode Island is very well represented for it's small size (but HUGE stature ;) ).

Some of the front runners are surprising to me.  Michigan, in second place is also not too surprising due to its progressive nature (in some places anyway ;)).  The tie for third place, Virginia and Wisconsin, are both surprises to me, especially Wisconsin.  Much like my home state of OK, it's my impression that Wisconsin has been slow to embrace the TG concept.

Some of the the states bringing up the rear are curious as well.  Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming have no votes.  That is a significant amount of land and people, and Colorado strikes me as progressive towards TG acceptance.  Furthermore, by including Utah and Nevada with low counts (2 and 1 respectively), there is a contiguous land mass with a dearth of reported TG births.

Just some thoughts here.  I'd love to hear others musings over these results.  Please keep in mind, this is very much unscientific and should be considered appropriately.  Please keep comments friendly and constructive, you never know whose state you might be bashing!

Same here, though the two in California have grandkids coming on so I think we're up to eight or nine now.  Also a couple cousins in BC and family connections mean usually somebody's in Alaska at any given time.

Hi folks!

I realize that we have a statistically small number of responses, and that they are skewed by factors like internet access and social-economic status (ability to afford internet access), but I thought I'd add an unscientific comparison of state responses vs. state population.  Someone with a statistics background could do a much better job and include a calculation of how statistically significant a state's variation is.

In the list, I am calculating the percent higher or (lower) that the response count is in comparison to the proportion of the population.  So, Wisconsin has 152% more responses than the population would have indicated. My home state of Michigan looks far less interesting at 69% higher, than just seeing 7 is second only to California's 14. Texas jumps out to me as being probably the most interesting in its lack of responses!

Kim  :)

P.S. I apologize for the columns not being straight.  I think they would be in Courier font. This is the most readable display option I found.

Hi Kim, significance depends upon both the question and how it's asked.  The basic null hypothesis here would be the probability of an individual being transgender is invariant of which state they're born in.  A statistical significance test then asks whether the data is likely to contradict this hypothesis.  I did a quick chi-square on the data so far and got a p value of 1.00, indicating the null hypothesis cannot be rejected even without control for convenience sampling and selection bias.  To indulge in a little more detail, p values range from 0 to 1 with the classic 95% confidence level being 0.05---to reject the null hypothesis at 95% confidence we'd be looking for p < 0.05.

If you're curious to explore further there's a lot of information online about significance testing.  Videos, blogs, wikis, and so on.  Excel has some built in functions (CHISQ.TEST was used for the above) and R is free to download (big learning curve, though).

They would but no worries, they're easy enough to follow and a good bit more readable than the image was.  Plugging in the BBCode to lay it out as a table would take forever unless you wrote a script, which would take a while too.  For folks who want a more manipulatable version it's quick enough to paste the table into Excel, do fixed width column conversion, and remove the spaces.

Looks like so far I'm the only one born in TN. Which means I can't ever change my birth certificate since the state is so transphobic. Funny thing is I didn't grow up there. I've lived everywhere from NC, NJ, NY and Germany (then West Germany.) I only live there from 1988 to 1998 for college (University of TN - Knoxville) and my first job out of college at The Learning Company - Foreign Language Division (My old name is on some of the old Software Titles from Berlitz and Learn To Speak Series and the Pronunciation Tutors.)

I was just there last week and visited some friends that still work at the University. I found out a how trans positive the University is when a Professor transitioned a few years ago and the University was supportive the whole way. Just with the State Assembly in Nashville felt the same way.

Thanks Caitlin!

My understanding of what you wrote is that there is at least a 5% chance that the variations we see are just random differences. And the 5% might be much higher.  Is that a roughly correct interpretation?

Its still fun to ponder!

Thanks!
Kim

@ Kim & Caitlyn,

There is a similar poll for Canada:

The logistics and demographics for Canada are different, but there is a very clear signal in the numbers there.

Yep!  The p value is the probability the observed data is consistent with the null hypothesis.  In the formalism of mathematical logic that's a statement of different semantics.  But with a high p value like we have here it's functionally equivalent.

Cool!  I'll have to look at the numbers more closely sometime.

I am from, and live in, TN. I find it to be a very positive place to live. However, that could simply be from the people that I live around and associate with. I have experienced nothing but positive remarks and comments, but some of my brothers and sisters have not been so lucky.

Im happy that your visit to University was a positive one. My school is also really progressive and it has been a nice place in which to transition.

For the most part, friends and family in the area have been very friendly and supportive. My biggest gripe with TN is the state government is NOT. The city of Knoxville had an LGBT anti-discrimination law in the city limits, but the state took it away by passing a bill that prevent and city or county from passing an anti-discrimination law that goes beyond the state's laws. Of course the state on has gender and race that does not include LGBT. So basically is made Knoxville's anti-discrimination law void.

Bumping this just to see if at long last we can get representation from the few states without a vote so far:

Idaho, Maine, Mississippi, New Hampshire and Wyoming.

It's fantastic we've got someone here from almost every US state.  Wouldn't it be great if there was one from all of them?  If you know someone who's not on Susan's yet who can fill in the 'blanks', tell them to join and help complete the map!
