Title: Tom Daley

Earlier today Tom Daley (the team GB Olympic diver if you haven't heard of him) posted a video on YouTube stating he was dating a man. He didn't directly say he was gay but he did say he was attracted to girls.
I think it's brilliant that a well known athlete comes out as gay etc because too often it's considered taboo in sport.

Good for him, but this story saddens me in two ways. First that he probably came out now to do it on his terms rather than being roasted in the tabloids down the road, and second that this is even a news story. What hope do we have if its still sensationalist "news" when a young man announces he is in a relationship with another man. I would have hoped we were at least beyond that by now.

We're getting there, faster than I believed possible. I will never forget the day, several months ago, when I heard a radio interview of a woman. I don't remember who she was, or what she did, but I do remember how naturally the interviewer asked after her wife, how she was doing. And she responded quite naturally, as if it were perfectly normal.
Because, suddenly, it *can be*. It wasn't that long ago that there were no legal gay marriages and anyone who was anyone hid their "abnormal sexuality" from the public eye.
We are getting there... now that GLB people are gaining societal acceptance, I hope that those of us who fit into the T and Q communities are not far behind.
*hug*

This made the front page of almost all the major newspapers in the UK today, should it really be that much of a deal? Especially when there was a recent helicopter crash killing at least 9 people, a mother was forced to have a caesarian and her child given up for abortion because of apparent ill mental health, and there are criminal inquiries into the death of a 90 year old woman in hospital which have already got into some trouble.

Agreed. As he said in his video he had been mis-quoted in a recent interview. I have seen many say, it's not news - in a nice way of course.

Exactly. What I found quite ironic was that he said in the interview that he had been mis-quoted yet the majority of newspapers said he has come out as gay. He also says in the video that he is still attracted to girls. So wouldn't that make him bi? He never used a label in the video anyway. It's up to him, not the media.

This is what I was just about to comment on. Sounds like he's bi to me!

Anyone who is interested, and lives in the UK, Tom Daley is on the Jonathan Ross show tonight.
