Title: Therapist first visit tomorrow
Post by: CuriousAboutLife on December 03, 2013, 11:34:07 AM
Tomorrow I see my gender therapist for the first time. I was curious if there are any certain things I should ask right away, or just let it flow?

I say let what feels right flow.

Just be as honest as possible

Your first visit (which is often free) is about getting to know your therapist and she or he you.  I'd advise letting it flow.  If there is something specific troubling you that you need help with right away, definitely bring it up, but otherwise your therapist should be able to keep the conversation flowing well; they're experts at that.

*hug*  Congrats on another huge step! :)

Lucky that you got into one so quickly. The process is not usually that fast.
I wish you luck with your endeavours.

You might think about what your goals are for therapy ahead of time in case you get asked that question so you can be prepared. Otherwise just let the conversation flow and above all be honest - nothing you say will shock the therapist. And you will be surprised at how quick the time with the therapist flies by LOL....

I just had my first visit and did it feel good for me to come out and say what I have been ashamed of and scared by. I told my therapist I am a woman and want to be a woman totally. That was only the second time I have verbalized that statement. The first time didn't go so well I was made to feel like I had some plague or demon that needed to be cast out. I guess what I am trying to say is be as honest as you can be and nothing you can say will shock your therapist, mine sure wasn't and that was nice. Good luck!!!

Where I live there are almost any gender therapists...

All the private therapists aren't used to deal with the trans community. Only a few have the experience. On the public system there are a few more, as we have specialized services for trans people...but the waiting until the first visit is enormous...

I decided to talk with a private therapist before the public and she was very nice with me. I told her basicaly all the problems of my life and about my condition as transgender...but I can't express myself very well and things are not going where I would like them to be because of that...sometimes she thinks I don't have enough life experience to decide that this is the right thing for me...but I feel it deeply inside and I think that my lack of experience is due to the fact I am on the wrong body....

My advice: open up and tell everything as clearly as possible. The therapist will conduct the questions, so it is up to you to tell her everything and to tell the truth all the time. Be sincere and the therapy will be great!
