Hello guys and dolls, and welcome to Nero's Pointless Poll of the Day!
In which type area do you live?
I used to live in an urban area, but am now firmly planted in suburbia.
What about you?
Where's your crib?

They despise me. I distract them from their fun.
I've lived in the burbs, but I hated every moment.

This is a hard question, for some reason. ???
I live in a subsection of a large city, not in the heart of the city, but where I live is sort of on the edge of its own cityhood. In fact, if I walk out my front door, in front of me is a pretty urban area, but behind me is a large area that could only be described as a suburb.
I live on the edge, but not really in either.
OMG. It has only just this moment occurred to me that where I live is metaphorically reflective of my whole life.
Wow. 8) I wonder if I need to move?

rural... and not rural ENOUGH if you ask me, I can look out my windows and see houses. *sigh* I have often mused that to get the population density I desire around my house that I will have to live on a big ship in the middle of the ocean. ... I have yet to decide if I wish to give up my mountains and trees and wildlife to achieve that however.
The best neighbors are chewmoos! (or forests, presuming no two legged visitors)
*sigh*
Did you know people move out into the back of beyond, and then cut everything down and plant grass? .... Like what is the point of living in a wooded area if you are going to make it look ... well.. civilized. *gag*
Heh.

I guess suburbia is the closest match, though there are plenty of farms, open fields and woodlands here too (way north of Philadelphia).
It's a really pretty area, kinda the best of both worlds...

All of you who live on the fringe of suburbia, look at the forests and farms closely, cause they'll be gone yet. Everybody wants the space, the problem is that there is just too many people for that and as soon as we move in, we disturb, destroy what we seek to appreciate; there is no real solutions to this anywhere on earth.
Best thing is to live in a dense urban settings so we can keep as much greenery possible as close as possible.

Yeah.
We had small patches of woods here in my town and over the past 5 years they've cleared them in order to put houses between existing houses and behind existing houses.

Kailua Kona, Hawaii! Rural but well on the way to urban. There are tractors everywhere. It`s like orange county in the 50`s jumping to the 90`s in 3 years time. So Sad , lots of presurved land and protected land is being bought out by developers. Land that was never to be biult on, ever. Ancient graveyards being destroyed on the whole hush hush thing. Thats our corrupt country though. It`s always been like that.

I have almost always lived in suburban or rural areas. I could not stand living in a crowded city.
In Illinois I live about 50 miles or so from Chicago (Des Plaines). In Missouri I lived about 70 miles from St Louis. In Colorado I was about 30 miles from Denver, now in California I am about 2 hours from Los Angeles, out in the high desert.
I have lived in 12 states from coast to coast, so this list is only a few of them.

Its an antique house restored to its simpliest beauty without totally remaking it into something new. These days primitives (antiques) are worth way more than a antique refinished to look new. My house also is filled with the same. You couldn't find but maybe 3 other similar homes in all the world brought back to life and so old. Mine was built in 1820.

Have to say though, you've done it up in a kind of country idyll kind of way. I do hate the countryside though. Give me chimneys and people bustlng around and the laughter of another family in the door next to me and the screech of train breaks and weird exotic food and bowls of veg stacked outside cornershops and kids running around with grandparents calling them and teenagers standing on street corners flirting and the weird tabernacle church ringing with out of tune hymns and the old sofas dumped on the pavements and all the signage and words and images everywhere, and graffitti with more words and images and birds flying amongst it and foxes and cats dodging through it and everywhere the happy, moving, chaotic hub of lives lived. Well i didn't mean my house in age but in it being kept up just enough to be livable and not fall apart and frnished with the same. Most people who get old homes restore them to perfection which basically is like taking an old antique and sanding off its past.. .
Hey yea i love visiting cities once in a blue moon but i do like to see the stars at night and the moon and not have to worry about all the crazies who come out when it does..

Oooooh, I see. Well that is rare, and sort of special.
For me, one of the great joys of London is how the past cannot possibly be sanded out, even with explosives, fires, bombs and town planning...the past can't help bleeding through. That everything is a palimpsest of all that has happened before. It's all bubbling and bursting through - so you can live in the present as a continuation of the past. Certainly many people of the past were not prissy about their past, the way they chopped their buildings and such about. The people of the past seemed to live in the present more than the people in the present do (certainly in reading Pepys, I am shown how much more in his time he is compared to me and mine).
As for the crazies....in the countryside, their is no escape.....

I visited a friend in the suburbs last week. Beaverton, if any locals are reading this. I got so lost and was so amazed. Everything was far apart, the houses were too big, the yards were too big, the streets weren't gridded out, the buses were ancient and didn't run much, and really the whole situation was terrifying.
Lol I have a very limited skill set.

We're a suburban kind of rural. We have crappy internet service but we're going to have houses up and down this road in a few short years. We live 20 minutes from a liberal island city in the midst of a sea of conservatism. The very conservative town we live near convinced us not to have kids and subject them to that school system. (I'm a woman married to a woman.)

I mean, out of all of Canada, I think Calgary is one of the most rural urban cities. Why do I still feel like moving to somewhere even more rural? :C

I'm getting scared. I've lived in Portland Oregon for sixish years and we stand out less here than we have anywhere else, but we're still seen as such freaks and I want so badly to be normal.
I thought we'd be alright here. This place is so progressive.
I'm trans and I guess I'm gay but that's only because we define that by gender (I always liked men and as a man that's a different life than as a woman). I had a child at a young age, and it's just the two of us. We're atheists I guess, but that's only a big deal when people think it is. My daughter is half autistic and half ptsd (to greatly simplify it) and very, very loud.
We're not wanted here. People who share any particular attribute don't share the others, and this town isn't big enough to keep word from getting around about any given thing that happens within whatever community (gay, trans, mental health, autism, poverty, liberal activism, etc) and I'm too tired to keep up. I can't do spin and I can't play any part that will be visibly socially acceptable.
Anyway. I'm looking at NYC. I really really want to find a place where I don't stand out so much. Anywhere.
We've been in Portland longer than anywhere else. I've no hope for progress here.

I live somewhere in the north of the world. Town has under 900 people. I started out in a city of about 400k but I'm no longer even in that country. I like keeping myself more anonymous online, especially here and places like this.
I enjoy being far from any city. It's an hour drive to even reach the nearest cities, and they are very small.
Plus everyone is friendly and you can't drive past someone without them waving.

I live in what I like to call "pseudo-suburbia". We are anywhere from an hour to 45 minutes away from any major city, but they still talk about this town having a "Metro" area, (which it doesn't). It's the typical pocket of rich douchebags that try to make this stupid town look like something more than what it really is. If I could afford to live in an area in a major city that wasn't a dangerous, crime-infested rathole, I would get the hell away from here and never look back. This place is boring, dull and just plain sucks.

I live in a little village basically. Its sort of a town, has its own zipcode, but they closed our post office after it was flooded by a hurricane again a few years ago. Now I have to go a few towns over to get my mail since I don't want a mailbox in front of my house. I guess you could sort of call it suburban, but it doesn't have that feel to it.

I live on the countryside in Sweden. I have almost 10 miles to the nearest city(Helsingborg). Most of the year it is great. But during the winter it's awful because there is snow everywhere and there are never any vehicles that will plow the snow. On occasion we get so much snow that we can't get outside because it almost covers our doors completely.

I think we're going to St Johns, an urbanish but way less dense than I'm usually okay with neighborhood of Portland. If we do, it will be through Home Forward (aka HAP/housing authority of portland), but even as a normal renter I was looking at going to either that area or south of Powell or Holgate soon because rents have skyrocketed since we moved here. If we go to St Johns we can easily access a huge woodsy park in addition to the rivers and lots of small parks, and there's some decent music and food nearby. Public transit and grocery store access there is not good.
I live in the 50s part of the NE quadrant of my city right now (where the river is zero/center and anything in either direction proceeds to higher numbers). We can walk downtown in about an hour, and we have access to lots of buses and grocery stores, but we're far enough out that there aren't sidewalks everywhere, and being close to the freeway means that many drivers are speeding and not expecting pedestrians. I don't plan to ever not be at least an occasional pedestrian.

A very rural little village in the rolling green hills of the northern half of England. Almost in the middle of nowhere - with no shops, leafy country lanes, acres of woodland, riding schools every fifty feet and where, if you listen closely on a dark, moonlit night, you may well hear the faint strains of banjo music.

The nearest hospital, bank, or major supermarket is thirty minutes' drive away. There is almost nothing here to amuse the average city person.

Rural, and I hate it. I wish to live more urban but suburban would be fine too. I'm a total city person at heart, and living close to nature as I do now only bores me half to tears. But I don't have the means to move where I want even remotely, so I just have to grit my teeth and bare with it for another 5-10 years or so...

I chose suburban, SW side of Atlanta, but still have horse farms and cow scenery (500 acres just across street) so suppose would still be a diehard Jeffersonian Agrarian! (ie: more rural) Sorry but positively despise "city people" . . . Just because you 'ave the WALK signal doesn't mean you can totally IGNORE traffic with yer music Walkman on!!
Was browsing 'polls' this AM to get some topic/question suggestions. I have an original php web based CASS survey system (https://www.safetyclimatesurveys.org/) and would like to design and create a serious Transgender survey that incorporates what's called "lookback" - the ability to dynamically ask different groups of people specific questions based on previous poll responses.
Am interested in TG attitudes, living situations and depression. Will post more if interest, when I have more time!

A teeny-tiny fishing village, year-round population, including surrounding farmland, maybe 300. When we go to town for shopping or services, "town" is one of three places, population 4000, 5000, or 6000, depending which one we go to. So, really quite rural.
My trans services - therapist, HRT doc, support group - are in the city, an hour and a half away, population 400,000.

I'd definitely classify it as rural. It's the largest town in the county, but it's completely surrounded by farmland. Even the people who live in town could be seen as farm-folks. We have a walmart, and even a movie theater (only built around 10 years ago), but whenever someone wants to do any real shopping or eating out, they drive to Kansas City (and hour and some change away).
