Title: Orange is the New Black [SPOILERS]
Post by: dalebert on January 05, 2014, 10:34:30 AM
Orange is the New Black is the new Breaking Bad.

Here are my thoughts. Very white-bred person with a perfect life has their life thrown into turmoil by an unexpected event. It feels very unfair. Whereas Breaking Bad explored how screwed up the drug war is and how it makes a bad problem worse, Orange is the New Black seems to be doing the same thing with the prison system. I've often heard that prison is crime college and people come out of it with this dark cloud hanging over them and have trouble finding honest work. Meanwhile, they learned how to do crime while in the box. This really hit me at the end of the season when we really see the decline of the protagonist in prison.

Discuss.

I like the show. The protagonist is very flawed and usually claims things "aren't fair" when she's usually the cause or at least part of the cause of the unfairness and/or unfair towards others.

Finished up the first season a few weeks ago. After that crazy ending, I'm really excited for season 2.

It is too bad this didn't go anywhere, I think you have presented an intriguing perspective. I for one find the writing outstanding in how well they tell everyone's stories. The show doesn't try and convince you that the these women are innocent, or unjustly incarcerated, or should be forgiven, but that they all have stories and the truth is it's complicated. What it shows that in many ways these women are no different from you and I, and they are really only one step away from us. One little mistake and this could be any of us.

And finally it is an entire cast of developed, well rounded, relatable, and thought provoking female characters; something that is unfortunately still all to rare.

Also worth mentioning is Jenji Kohan's previous show Weeds.

I'm surprised I never mentioned Black and Pink (http://www.blackandpink.org/purpose/). You folks should check out their website.

True. You seem to be the first person to show any interest in my perspective on it.

I love the show, and have heard even better things about the book (a memoir, which I haven't read yet). Have any of you read the book?

Such a great point. And when they did Suzanne/Crazy Eyes's back story... ahhhh the heartbreak. That was just crushing.  :'(
