Title: Just published my teen transgender novel^^
Post by: micechasekittens on January 05, 2014, 05:55:11 PM
I hope it is okay to post this here.  During transition, I couldn't find many books about younger transitioners or from their viewpoint, so I decided to publish my own.  'The Trans-fer Student' is about Rachael, a teen mtf, who gets the chance to attend a privileged girls' school.  Her dream becomes a nightmare when rumor spreads that one of the new students is transgender.  Events begin to mirror the play the school will perform, Arthur Miller's The Crucible' as a modern day "witch" hunt takes over the school.

I tried through traditional means; yet, I kept getting literary agents who loved it, but felt it wouldn't be an easy sale to major publishers. I think this book can become a strong piece of advocacy for trans youth.  Hopefully, this post is okay and I'm really sorry if it shouldn't be here.  I'd love to know what everyone thinks.

It is available in print and on the kindle.  http://www.amazon.com/Trans-fer-Student-Elise-Himes/dp/1494733447/ref=sr_1_1_bnp_1_pap?ie=UTF8&qid=1388966028&sr=8-1&keywords=the+trans-fer+student

It's wonderful that you have the novel out in print, Elise. Someone will be touched positively by your novel. I happen to be apoet and will have a chapbook out later this year. The best to you in your future writings.

:)

This is excellent, and I'll be getting a copy!

My first novel was about a bisexual male teen, but there was a trans girl in the story. When I'd lamented on FB that I was having trouble finding a young adult MTF novel told from the POV of the MTF herself I was advised to write one myself. So, I'm currently working on a YA MTF novel as well.

Hopefully, I'll be able to publish it later this year.

EDIT: I just ordered my copy!

Awesome about the first book and good luck on the second.  That was the reason that motivated me as the only teen trans books I saw were told from another's perspective.

So far, I've read 4 YA trans novels.

Luna and Almost Perfect were both told from the points of view of people close to the MTF's, whereas both I am J and Parrotfish are told from the points of view of the FTM's themselves.

Awesome! I hope it does well. I was pretty ecstatic when my poem got published in a compilation, so to see a whole work you have poured yourself into get published must be amazing.

All I have read is Luna, lol. I did enjoy it however.

Reading Luna pretty much was the catalyst for my transition.

Luna and I am J are both wonderful. Haven't read the others.

Congrats on your book, Elise. It's a shame there's such a dearth of trans*-themed titles..

I actually liked Parrotfish better than I am J, though they were both great reads.

My copy arrived today!

It's next on my to-read list only because my son gave me a book for Christmas, so I'll be starting this one shortly!

Thanks^^. Yeah, it is a shame.  The best one I've read was the non-fic book 'Whipping Girl: A Transwoman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity' by Julia Serano.

Luna was an excellent book and I'll be looking for 'Almost Perfect' and I'll definitely be ordering a copy of 'Trans-fer Student'.

Almost Perfect (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5982474-almost-perfect) by Brian Katcher was actually recommended here on Susan's a while back. That's how I heard of it.

And it looks like The Trans-fer Student (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20468603-the-trans-fer-student) is listed on Goodreads too!

Both books should be available through Amazon.com. And if I can get a good deal Constance, I will get your book as well! :) They always give special deals when buying books of  the same category. All books are available . . .
