Title: where does your username come from?
Post by: YBtheOutlaw on January 07, 2014, 02:38:02 PM
Post by: YBtheOutlaw on January 07, 2014, 02:38:02 PM
i've noticed numerous interesting usernames being used around this site, and more than once ive wondered why this person chose this name. so i thought it'd be interesting to share our stories behind the usernames with everyone in here. so people out there who have a username other than their real name, where does it come from? it's okay if there's no specific reason or if you're not comfortable with sharing the reason, share what you like!
mine is nothing much, YB stand for my first and middle names. i've even used it as a nickname with friends and most of my electronic-related usernames contain it. outlaw stands for the fact that i'm officially an outlaw, because our constitution states engaging in 'sexual indecencies' as a crime, which the current authorities interprete including being genderqueer. i picked the word from robin hood and i liked the idea of being something similar to him, so i've longed to recognize myself as an outlaw long before knowing the trans stuff. there goes my story..

I was once a big Dilbert fan and my real name is Dale so I combined them. Now I'm just fond of the sound of it. It's like my goofy nerdy nickname. I kind of wish more people would use it IRL but it doesn't happen. I'm just Dale in person.

Well Grace is my name, I'm no stranger to using concocted user names on forums, often based on female superheroes. This time though I wanted to be me, especially so I could have others calling me by that name (and it feels great!)...
I added the Ms because I was so sick of being called a Mr or Sir I really wanted to get the feel for using Ms (feels great too!) :)

Awesome! I love anagramming. My chosen name is from an anagram of my given name.
An anagram of my chosen name is "gorilla snifter"
An anagram of my given name is "Mr. Wet Orgy Organ"

Tossu is actually Finnish and means a certain kind of slipper, as in footwear. I think it originally had something to do with my Dir en grey fandom craze in the early 2000s but then it kinda stuck since I use it pretty much everywhere. It even became my IRL nickname.
I also go by the name LordLauri in some places, like Tumblr. Lauri is my name and the lord prefix originates from my Polish friend nominating me as the lord of darkness of something like that. :D Then I became the Daedric Lord of Procrastination.

I didn't want to use a username that I am already connected to on this site, so while thinking up a new username I looked down at my open textbook and saw that the case I was reading was written by the great Honorable Learned Hand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learned_Hand).
Learned Hand is an awesome judge, he's the creator of the "Hand Formula".
I like him, and there's nothing quite like his name, so I choose it as my username. He also had an awesome beard when he was young, and I'd love to be able to rock that look.

I saw your username, LearnedHand, and thought I might not be the only legal person here. :). It's always nice to find another one.
I've felt burned to ashes more than once in my life. But each time in the past, I have managed to rise from the ashes. I'm trying to do that again now because coming out as trans* has cost me just about everything. So that makes the image of a phoenix meaningful. I actually collect them as well, and I often wear one of several phoenix pendants when I am out and about. So I adopted it as an Internet username that I use quite often.
I find that Phoenix is frequently already taken when I sign up for usernames anywhere. If I make it ThePhoenix, then it is still taken by other people a lot, but not quite as often. :)

If you are going to be a lawyer, or even a judge someday (how awesome would that be?!), you have to have a memorable name.
Kenesaw Mountain Landis comes to mind.

I chose Malachite because I was watching the Sailor Moon Abridged series and Zoicite was saying "Oh Malachite, you're so dirty" and I like the way she emphasized the "Malachite" so I figured, why not go with that when I made this account. Plus, I like his hair and I couldn't think of a better nickname. Nephrite was going to be my name but I have the hardest time spelling it right.

Robin is a perfectly acceptable male nickname derived from my given name. It's also a pretty female name on its own.
I chose it because I'm realizing my female self is more me than I've realized in the past and I want to acknowledge m the same person, just expressed differently.
I used to use Wendy as a female name, but can't stand it now
Particle is a name I've used forever. It's from the They Might Be Giants song, Particle Man

My username is based on my real name - first initial, middle initial, first 6 letters of my last name. The university I attended suggested this format when I registered, and I kept the pattern but changed the first and middle initials. Actually, my username here is based on the name I was considering taking before I even found "Anna" (I wonder if I can talk somebody into changing that?)
My display name (Anna++) is a reference to programming. The "++" operator increments a value by 1.

Code Select
a = 1 # The variable "a" holds the value "1"

Mine is a mix of a few different things.
First,it is the name of the devil persona by my fave video game charactor
(Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy:Dirge Of Cerberus)
And Second,I use it as well as a roleplay charactor of my own on IMVU and
Third,I been known to cause a lot of Chaos when angry lol though I try to avoid that at all costs.

Emmaline was the heroine in my first novel. I wrote it before I came out to myself, and realized it was a metaphorical version of my battle with being trans.
My chosen name is Delaney - an irish surname that is now a unisex first name. It is shifting to female in popularity though. It means dark challenger-though I picked it not for meaning- but it is a form of the name laney, which I love and keeps my D initial from my old name. Being unisex and mostly female describes me perfectly.

Oh, so you're a Leafs fan, eh? I know a couple. I myself am a Sabres and Senators fan. :)
Yeah, wasn't old enough to see either of them play but Gordie and Terry were absolute beasts!

Well, my new username comes from the fact that ultimately I'd like to stay on this side of the gender divide, but I recognize that this may be a useless task of great effort. I'm very likely TS and probably going to wind up on at least low-dose HRT. But I still try to roll the rock of transgender up the hill everyday.

One of the many puns I can make with Jess, which is a bit easier than trying to do so with Jessica. I've also used Jesstrogen, around the 2nd half of last year, when the estrogen started to really kick its initial drive in, from like 6 months HRT to 11 months. Now I feel rather pretty most days, and I came up with this one, to represent both I how see myself, and my name, in one!

At primary school I was asked my name. I said Cindy, life went downhill from there on. An all male school in the 1960's was not enjoyable for a 'boy' called Cindy.
But I won.

I know that I am unusual and I am always searching for meaning. Aisla resonated with me at a number of levels as it is usually associated with a lovely but quite remote island, Eisla Craig off the Scottish coast half way by sea between Belfast and Glasgow. Currently a bird sanctuary the name is also said to be the anglicisation of the gaelic Aillse meaning fairy; but the tuetonic meaning is good humoured and German meaning is noble. Once a common name for men it is now regarded as a woman's name.

The English teacher in Azumanga Daioh.
This is for five good reasons:
1. I was an English student who eventually did become an English teacher (once upon a time)
2. My pedagogical style was as unorthodox as the character
3. My driving style has been described as a tad... aggressive?
4. Despite my protests to the contrary, most friends think my true place is in academia as a professor of History or Literature.
5. My temper and temperament was also quite similar to the character.
To be perfectly candid though, I find my temperament has mellowed alot as of late. I'm not certain if that is psychological or merely hormonal. I think I'm a bit sweeter... even if a little bit more catty than I used to be.

Every forum that I join I use the name "pinkkeith". Keith is the name that I was given at birth. I used the word "pink" before it to show my homosexuality and femininity. Katie is the name I gave myself while in girl mode, so it only made sense to use that name here rather then my birth name.
