Title: I got my referral to start HRT! But is it enough?
Post by: mountainhun on January 07, 2014, 09:05:45 PM
Hi, everyone!  I'm pretty happy, cause today my counselor gave me a referral to take to a local endocrinologist to begin HRT.  However, I'm a little nervous because I hope it's the right kind, and I'm not sure that it is.
I contacted the endocrinologist beforehand, asking what she required.  She said, "All you need is a referral from a counselor or therapist you're seeing."  I had already been seeing one of the counselors my university provides, and she agreed to do the referral, though she did need to take it to her higher-ups to make sure that she could.
I did that on the last visit before the winter break began, and just got the referral today.  I'm pleased about it, but looking at the language there are a lot of "he's" liberally sprinkled about the text, and it doesn't say anything about gender dysphoria or anything of that nature, but certifies that I am of a sound mind and judgement to make medical decisions for myself.
I just came on here to ask how this compares to others, and what their referrals or scripts were like to begin HRT.

Hi mountainhun,

Good to hear the good news. In the world of transition, any referral is a good referral. It allows you to the next stage, for you to evaluate as to whether this is for you.

Generally speaking, the pronouns demonstrate how you presented, irrespective of your mental attitude. There are exceptions to this generality based on the counselor and practice policies. These policies may be based on your current legal name and gender marker which may be a State or Federal health legislation. My State legislation deems I must be acknowledged in whatever gender I present in. Hence during my transition it was all Catherine, her and she's.

Hope your introduction into the world of HT (Hormone Therapy) treats you well.

Huggs
Catherine

Same as Catherine, I was referred to as in my legal documents in particular my medicare documents which is the Australian health cover system. As they use this to charge they refer to you as you are on the system. As soon as I changed my gender marker on it I was referred to as my correct gender and name. There was no insult intended it was just the legalities of the situation. As soon as I was legally female even the charge changed as HRT for females is a different schedule.
