Fox News' trusty doctor, Keith Ablow, [. . . is] saying that the whole idea of being transgender might be a myth.

Ablow wrote a column on Fox News' website Tuesday in which he claimed that giving children the freedom to make gender decisions is "destructive" and "toxic."

But what's more is that Ablow said that he believes the idea of being transgender may not actually exist, [. . .]

Oh well, I had a doctor once who told me I didn't have diverticulitis, but had high blood pressure and diabetes.  Wrong on all three counts, and he damned near killed me with blood sugar meds.

Just because you have an M.D., it does not make you an expert on all things medical.  This is why we have specialists.

True. Our local batch of quacks told my mom that she had a staph infection. She went out of town to get a second opinion and they found out what she had wasn't anything close to being a staph infection. Some docs are simply dumber than dirt.

The man is clearly suffering from an acute case of crackpot. Page the ceramicist, stat!

The sad and... scary thing is how many people eat this crap up.

Your absolutely right about that, Jill. Don't forget that Ablow is nothing more than a shill for the advertisers and he's geting paid pretty well.

I had two questions for Ablow

1) Has spent anytime with transgender people for a day or so seeing the things that they face?

2) Even he does find that he was wrong in his assessment, is he willing to change his own views and beliefs?

The second one is hard for people who are married with a particular belief system. It's more a matter of pride and ego because they hate to admit that they are wrong.

No, but the next best thing.  They censured him for his anti-gay positions which are in direct contrast to APA positions on that.  He later resigned, saying it was because he had strong disagreements with the DSM-5.

This is why I don't subscribe to either the far left or right.   Both extremes seem to see things in black and white and won't ever admit they're wrong, even when all of the evidence points in that direction.  I see things in technicolor, appreciate all nuances and carefully weigh all available evidence before I begin to draw a conclusion.  I don't understand people who allow others do all the hard thinking for them.

All sarcasm aside, I've never met a medical professional who actually has worked with trans people before that thinks transsexualism isn't real. I've had so many nurses, psychiatrists, and GPs say that after working with the trans community they felt compelled to act on our behalf because they see what our lives really involve.

What people aren't seeing is that he has stated opinion, not fact. He is welcome to his beliefs, until it interferes with my life.

That's right. I don't believe that willfully stupid and ignorant dunderheads exist...and yet there one is, writing for Fox.

There was a certain hand signal used as a safety warning by a superior on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier I learned in the Navy.  It consists of a right fist in a semi closed left hand with the outward motion of the right fist.  It means get your head out of it!  Like I said before: "Ablow at it again".

Ablow, though wrong-headed, expresses a medical opinion that was, until recently, "mainstream" among psychiatrists, including those at Johns Hopkins.

Dr Ablow is a psychiatrist who trained at Johns Hopkins  From his webiste:

Keith Ablow, MD is one of America's leading psychiatrists. He is a graduate of Brown University and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Johns Hopkins, as many of us are aware, was an early proponent of SRS, but gave up the practice around 1980 due to the influence of Staff psychiatrists like then-Chief of Psychiatry Paul McHugh.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, he is the son of a high school teacher and a housewife. "McHugh describes himself as religiously orthodox, politically liberal (he is a Democrat) and culturally conservative -- a believer in marriage and the Marines, a supporter of institutions and family values."

There are a generation of JH-trained psychiatrists who hold to these outdated ideas.

Educate them, don't just call them names.
