Title: Bobby the Aardvark
Post by: Sandy on February 10, 2014, 08:21:06 PM
I give a workshop called "Trans 101 - Trans Information for the Non-trans Community".  It is a way to try to connect with the non-trans community, both LGB and straight, and try to explain that being trans has very little to do with sex or gender, but a search to become normal.

In an effort to have people understand what it was like being trans, I asked them how they would feel if they woke up tomorrow and they were an aardvark.  They looked like an aardvark, they smelled like an aardvark and all the other aardvarks kept telling them to aardvark-up and get over it.  It was a light hearted reference devoid of any sexual connotations.  And that our journey is a search to become normal and has very little to do with sexuality, gender or genitalia.

I wrote "Bobby the Aardvark" to explore this idea.

This story is an attempt to try to bring understanding to the cis-gendered without using gender as a descriptive term.

While there are no sexual situations whatsoever in this story, this is not a childrens story. There are images of brutality, aggression, and manipulation which younger readers would not understand.

Look for it on Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and other popular booksellers!

I loved it! At first, it did sound like it would be a good children's story, but like you said, as it went on, it did get more disturbing. I think it did a really good job showing the perspective of the aardvarks as well - how there was a lot of fear behind what they were doing and they believed they were doing the right thing (well at first anyway). and I liked the twist at the end.
I think it could really help people imagine what that could be like.
