So I'm interested in dating but have no clue what to do. I would preferably like to within a queer space but living on Long Island I can't find anything geared for college aged and/or 20 year olds. It's annoying me how horrible the community is where I live, especially in New York City's massive shadow.

If you are in NYC's shadow, try GLBTQ networks in NYC.

I can't go into the city because it is too expensive to travel there, even once a week. I need to find stuff here and I don't know anything.

I feel your pain in a big way.  Maybe try online dating and/or gay bars?  There are definitely gay and trans people in that part of NY, though it's harder to meet those who fall into the younger demographic, especially trans.  Have you tried going to the non-trans or lesbian functions at some of the local lgbt centers?  I'm sure there may be some bisexual or lesbian women that would consider dating a transwomen.  Also, some of the local universities have strong lgbt networks.

well, I'm sorry for all the trouble you have with your social life.  It's definitely a hard place to be when your that  age. The only thing I can say , like the others have said are Universities ,lgbt centers and bars and parties. Sorry I can't be of more help I'm personally into a more solitary life just taking things a day at a time and see what happens. Just getting my transition together is the most important thing to me right now.

Well It's hard because the local queer centers have nothing catered for anyone except bi and gay men. I'm not into the bar or party scene as everything is too much. I'm frustrated as I only know of my trans group, nothing is advertised nor even my therapist doesn't know anything either and shes been in the scene for years.

have you tried the internet for groups for transgenders  in your area or start your own web page

Long Island has a very scattered queer community and apparently not much outside the bar scene. I haven't found anything on the internet for us queers, btw I'm trying to meet people outside the trans community too.

I don't know, but I'm guessing most people meet through bars, parties or friends, unless you go to school.

I've met a few people through school. I just really hate this place...

How far up the island are you? Come Summer, your options should blossom.

I'm right in the middle and I have heard fire island's a good queer spot but not sure how it is for younger people

I go to the school there and part of the undergrad club lol, I'm looking to expand.

Greetings from a former fellow student. I spent four years at Stony Brook in the mid 1980s.

The Nassau/Suffolk social scene was unforgiving, even for a good looking straight guy (which I was back then).

My next move might be to try to get to know some of the people in the LGBT groups on campus. Find out what social groups they inhabit. Use networking as a tool to expand your world.
