Title: Nice surprise in the VA ER
Post by: justjournalhonestly on March 12, 2014, 08:33:31 PM
So, I broke a rib the other day in an "awesome I am an idiot" accident. I was in a good deal of pain but not so bad that I couldn't drive so I went to the ER at the VA hospital to get a work note. Sure enough it turned out I fractured one rib and bruised things up very nicely. OBVIOUSLY that is not the nice surprise. What is however is what happened while there.

They were not busy at all so they got my vitals and immediately brought me back to a room to wait for one of the doctors. So I am sitting there when this very nice and energetic brunette doctor hopped into my room asking "Well hello, so tell me how you hurt yourself?" So I give her the rundown and she asks me where I think I landed and as I am showing her, this older man opens the door and was surprised to find her in there helping me.

"Oh, I did not know you were in here, I did not see you assigned to the patient did you pick it up?"

"I did" she answered "Did the darn computer not list it? It does that sometimes you know?"

"Hmmm, yea something must of gone wrong. So you got this one?" He questioned.

"Yep!" So he closes the door and she waits a minute and then looks at me and whispers "He is super conservative, so when I saw your chart (I am diagnosed as transsexual though I have not done anything noticeable yet at the stage I am at, you all know I am new to this) I intercepted you."

All I could do is giggle and say "Thank you." She was cool as hell and that was a super pimpette move by her. I must say I may have the greatest luck (minus a broken rib) to this point with my transition, as I keep finding accepting people and besides my parents who are still potentially allies down the road (not yet though, they deserve some time on this) I don't think I have had one awkward situation yet.

Now this may not be good for my long term coping, as when I get into physical changes we all know I could have crappy situations jump out at me even from strangers randomly. Though it may be good in allowing me to build some confidence in my transition as well as in the general human populace that I do hope makes dealing with douche bags a lot easier rather than harder from not dealing with any yet.

Well, dad's been kind of douchey, but all in all manageable for I have taken the approach of being sarcastic with him per my ex. She reminded me that tactic is often one that works with him. I think it is kind of giving into him, which I have done my whole life, and it has not always worked. However, today I think I got him good as he asked me about my first day at my new job (oh yea, broke my rib the night before I start my new job, lol, fun.) He asked "Did they fire you yet?" and then followed up with "Any hotties there?" Meaning any hot girls that may wake me out of my insanity and make me a normal hetrosexual man.

So I let him know, "Nah, they kept so far. As far as hotties there were TWO cute guys there."

He laughed, nervously, but that might actually be progress. At least it put him on his heels and he behaved the rest of the convo.

Anyways, that doctor was awesome! SO cool to see someone do something like that, as she had no idea what stage I was at and came to my rescue." Wicked cool. I will remember her always.

That was pretty cool.  How did the VA know you were diag. TS?

I was diagnosed there as my therapist is a VA therapist and thus it is part of my records.

OIC. Trying that at the VA here would be... scary. LOL.
