Title: Having some doubts about my voice.
Post by: Riven on March 24, 2014, 03:18:33 AM
Hey Team! I was thinking about the type of girl I might be when I transition early and I realized the only serious concern I have about 'passing' is my voice. Now, when I say my voice is deeper than a hole in the earth that you would be falling for about an hour if you stumbled into, that's an understatement. I play computer games and when I speak over the chat room, I'm often mistaken for a popular christian celestial being (I won't say which one.) But I digress! How have some of you that also had seriously deep voices pass when spoken to? What tips do you have for someone who is having serious concerns about their voice? It's bold but I almost feel like my only options are vocal fold surgery or even taking a vow of silence and simply never physically speaking again. Now as someone who enjoys making people laugh never speaking again would be very difficult for me, however, I would rather be perceived as the person I need to be than a girl has a very good sense of humor.

LOL @ celestial being... Okay I think I'm catching your drift ;)

Surgery could be a good option, but don't let it stress you out or make you think that you NEED to have it. There are countless MtFs with low starting voices that have successfully & happily attained their goals, so I would look at surgery as a very last resort. That's just me though!

My unqualified recommendation is to try out some vocal function exercises. They are safe and anyone can do them to build range and strengthen the voice. You can find a number of them by googling "vocal function exercises".

I also tried Kathe Perez' mp3 things with some degree of success.

As you will find, there are many things that make a voice sound feminine- pitch being just one of them. Practice a little every day and you will be shocked with the improvement :)

Thanks for the response! I think my voice has a lot of potential.

Surgery seems to be the easiest option but I think I'll value the result more if I work for it. I'm just not sure.

I'll take your advice, thanks!
