Title: How to apply liquid eyeliner?
Post by: Tamara Thor on March 24, 2014, 09:03:35 PM
Hey there,

what's the best dummy proofed method to put on liquid eyeliner? I'm always struggling getting it right, and most of the times I do it over and over again and still look like a mess.

- How do you keep your eyes from blinking?
- I'm right handed. Applying it to the right eye (the right from my point of view) is not thaaaat hard, but on the left one I don't really know in which angle I need to hold the brush, without covering my view, while still being able to reach everywhere.
- How long does it usually take you to put it on?  ;D

Thanks for any advice :)

If you're having trouble with it, try using a fine point makeup brush or even a paintbrush. Much easier than the ones that come with it. Also give gel eyeliner a shot. Much easier to control. MAC makes a nice gel.

About not blinking, a girl on youtube was using a q-tip to hold her eyelid up. That seemed to work somewhat, for me. At 3:21:

It should just take a couple minutes, once you're good at it. I use liquid pens and start by holding it on its side and start in the middle, applying it over the lashline, outward and then going to the inside to the inside corner and doing the same until I get a nice, even line. Make sure you fill in every gap, and just sorta correct as you go.

It's kinda like putting contacts in, you just have to practice and get comfortable until it's a breeze. Just watch YouTube vids, bring qtips, and keep at it!! I sucked at makeup when I first started, now I'm better than most girls I know.

I feel your pain.  I can't do it either.  Having poor vision doesn't help either.  I need contacts!

My problem is that it tickles too much and then I twitch.
But as with everything make-up, practice, practice, practice.

It can take some time to get used to it. You could use a pencil for a while to make it less messy when you do blink, and switch to liquid when it's more comfortable.

- I'm right handed. Applying it to the right eye (the right from my point of view) is not thaaaat hard, but on the left one I don't really know in which angle I need to hold the brush, without covering my view, while still being able to reach everywhere.
I hold it at a slight up angle but with as little side angle as possible unless I completely block my view.

Pencil, maybe a minute. Liquid maybe 2 minutes per eye.

Also, don't do long strokes, that will only make a small mess around each eyelash. Start by making spots between the lashes and then fill in the gaps. Think pointillism :)

Most important tip of all: Look straight ahead when you do your liner. Good luck!

Get the type that's basically a pen with a marker tip, and "writes" liquid eyeliner. I could not manage the brushes for the life of me. :) And the pencil ones are a pain in the butt, csince they need to be sharpened before every single application.

Eyeliner? I'm supposed to use eyeliner? That explains a lot. But I'm going to have to get up at 3 in the morning to get to work on time. Pre trans mode I could wake up 30 minutes before it was time to leave.  :D

use a pen liquid liner, place dots, draw the line by joining the dots.

Half close your eye, use one hand to "stretch" the eyelid to the side, this prevents you from blinking all the way and creates a more firm skin surface, then with a brush in your other hand rest the underside of your working hand against the back of the hand that's holding the eyelid, this way you have a steady hand with the brush at a 35 degree angle.

From there on you start in the middle right against the lashes and work your way outwards, once you have a thin line that extends as far as you want it start building up by adding a little at a time in longer strokes, if you want to do a flick at the end just let go of the eyelid then draw a curved line upwards and outwards like you were "extending" your lower waterline.
