Title: Male or female drinking habits?
Post by: Natalia on March 27, 2014, 12:52:16 PM
When drinking with my group of "friends" I often ask different drinks...and while all my "friends" ask their traditional beers and chopps, I was the ununsual "guy" drinking strange exotic and sweet drinks, like this one:

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fgoiabadademarmelo.files.wordpress.com%2F2011%2F08%2Fblue-lagoon-sprite1.jpg&hash=85fa6090ffa572e66ebd0b96710681fb7ce60238)

And often I liked to drink liquours...my all time favorite drink until today is amaretto, that is a liquour made of almods! delicious!

But my friends don't like it...they call it too sweet...and too "girly" for their taste.

Then one day I asked for a very typical brazilian drink, a "caipirinha", that is usually made of sugar cane hard liquor, sugar and lime....it is very strong...but mine was made with saké and strawberries and was soft and sweet again:

Everyone said (even the bartender) that that was a "girl" drink...and everyone mocked me.

Then I wanted to drink a malzbier...I can't drink "normal" beer, I hate it's taste and I think it is too bitter...but a malzbier is amazingly better.

Again...everyone told me "that's a girl drink".

What the hell? I feel good to know that my taste is indeed naturally a womans taste for drinks...but is it true?

Do women usually want "sweet" drinks while men only drink "macho" beverages and dull and boring things like beer all the time?

There is a feeling that men should "tough" and therefore shouldn't mind if their booze tastes awful, whereas women are "soft" and need good tasting booze because the can't handle the hard stuff.

Like the line from the Carrie Underwood song disparaging her ex's new fling, "he's probably buying her some fruity little drink 'cause she can't shoot whiskey."

IMO, just another way our society disparages femininity, even among females.

In terms of stereotypes and social expectations, it's true. I've seen a few TV shows where the guy orders a martini or another drink that isn't something simple, and he gets mocked for being girly or accused of people gay. It's just a think that men like simple beer or whiskey or something like that, and women like more complicated or sweet drinks. It's obviously nonsense though, people can like what they like.

Men are supposed to drink the 'hard' stuff because they are judged by their accomplishments in life and overcoming hardship while women are more judged on their 'softness' in both looks and character. I don't find it surprising that there is a relation between gender and drinking norms. The culture does not come in a vacuum.

A couple of guys bought me a cosmopolitan when I was in my work uniform (male mode) trying to embarrass  me (didn't phase me), but that drink was WAAAAY to sweet.

I don't "know" anything about what I should drink vs. my gender. I just drink what I like the taste of.
I've only found a couple of distilled spirits that I enjoy a specific brand and type of cognac and of Irish Whiskey, as they are very smooth.
Bailey's Irish cream is not to bad.
A banana or Strawberry  daiquiri  (aka Smoothie++ for computer nerds) are tasty.

it's another stupid gender steryotype like eating salat or beef, or drinking tea or coffee.

I think the reason why it became a steroytype that men drink beer and women drink fancy drinks.
is because drinks (as far I noticed) are usunally more colourfull, tastefull and Expensive than beers,
so when guys want to impress someone they will buy them a drink rather than a beer. but this is just my theori.

I usunally cant afford drinks so for me people who buy drinks are people who either got money, dont care about getting drunk, or want something special/diffrent luxery.
its not about gender more about what kind of party-type you are in my book.

I've never aquired a taste for anything more than a simple shot or cocktail made of a single liquor. I like wine too. I love beer but don't drink it often, too many carbs for me (carbs bad!)

For me I usualy ask for ddrinks because I hate the taste of beer.

And I get amazed with the variety of different drinks...as I love to try new things, I often want to try all of them.

They are really expensive...and on the last time when I asked for  few ones I was really desiring to get a bit drunk...there are times in life where you really need it.

But for the salad vs beef...I eat salad with beef every day lol My daily meals are mainly salad with beef...I eat almost no carbs!

When I was very young my relatives would gather on weekends. The males were cops and females secretaries. The males drank beer and whiskey. The females drank 7 and 7 except my one aunt that drank whiskey. I think my Mon was the only one that was not an alcoholic. I was very young and got the beer, whiskey and mixed drinks (made the 7&7's)from the kitchen. I would get drunk too and no one noticed. When I stopped drinking I was up to 90 cans and a bottle of Seagram's 7 a week and antihistamines (pseudaphed (sp)). I loved 7&7's but seldom had the 7up.

I do not think I was drinking for taste :)

Being a Type 1 diabetic I can't really touch any of the sweet drinks, nothing with sugar or fruit juice for me, even beer is off the table due to the carbs.

My question to everybody is what would you drink with zero carbs?

Things that really do have 0 carbs:

  • Vodka
  • Gin
  • Whiskey

Unfortunately Tonic water has a ton of carbs which leaves me drinking diet sodas with vodka or whiskey.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, what are your suggestions for 0 carb drinks?

I drink froo-froo girly drinks, whiskey, beer, and everything in between. Some people just like fruity or sweet drinks. I'm drinking a medium sweet wine tonight.

People can drink whatever. The stereotypes are silly. My grandmother drinks whiskey on the rocks and shots, while my grandfather prefers wine.

I'll drink anything, that may be the problem. I seem to be doing a bit better now I'm attempting to be more of a snob with my drink selection. I spend about as much, but a 6-pack or so of some micro-brew is probably healthier for me than a case of some cheap domestic. I may eventually move on to fine wine, though I seem incapable of telling the difference between it and Sutter Home.

Rum and Tequilla also have 0 carbs.
They also do make diet tonic water which is also zero carbs, most bars probably don't have it though. They do all have Diet Coke...Rum and Diet Coke, Jack and Diet Coke, etc, probably your best option if you want a mixed drink, though it's even more unhealthy for you since you are a diabetic.

Alcohol can be fun, but don't try to use it to hide from your gender issues, in the long run, it doesn't work.

Get a good single malt whisk(e)y (none of this blended stuff). With a glass of water to the side. Yes it's boring but it is the only true way to savour whisk(e)y, and I am a traditionalist

Not much of a drinker, never have been. Maybe average one or two drinks a week. Prefer red wine, but also like champagne and some beers. In the hot Australian climate a cold beer can be just the way to quench the thirst! Beer ads here are aimed almost exclusively at men but I know plenty of women who will drink beer.

Interesting Thread... These days I really don't drink that much. Not to say I didn't when I was younger, and never really considered it to be a habit so to speak. I still enjoy a glass of wine now and then and an occasional Dirty Martini (Top shelf of course) with dinner. Ahh... And good 12 year old scotch... yum... That said, there are rare occasions I do like to do shots of Goldshalger and beer ->-bleeped-<-s. Never was a whiskey person as I didn't react well to the influence and wanted to pick a fight with the biggest guy in the bar, so haven't drank that in many years. I do love amaretto... One it makes me, well, extremely horny and the taste is fantastic. There is a drink called the Treasure chest that is amaretto, Goldslager and gray goose vodka that is really good too, although two is my limit as they go down smooth and have a hell of a kick.

As to there being a difference between males and females, I don't think there is a difference. I have seen girls that love whiskey, wild thing as they were, and guys that liked foo foo drinks as I call them. So I think it is a matter of personal preference and not gender related.

Never really been an alcohol drinker... it's too strong for me, in any form. Even the "fruity" drinks, I just can't enjoy them because the burn from the alcohol isn't a pleasant feeling to me. My uncle tried ordering me a screwdriver once, and I was like "this vodka tastes way too strong... can't I just have the orange juice without it? Why do people drink this stuff if it doesn't taste good?"

The only alcoholic drink that I really enjoy is wine. There's nothing quite like a great veined blue cheese with a nice glass of cabernet. Yum!

So I guess I fall under the "girly" drinking spectrum... probably even more than normal because I don't even want the alcohol in the fruity drinks, I just want the fruit.

Just looking at the pictures of those sweet drinks gives me a hangover.  Delicious, but they just go down too easily for comfort, and I end up with far too much alcohol in my system.   :)

Of course the simple answer is just "drink what you like", but the truth is that next to eating, socially drinking alcohol is an extremely cultural thing. Therefore it is understandable that there are some gender issues that can come into play.

We might not like or agree with it, but  there can be strict cultural rules are built around these sorts of things and people can face consequences (Maybe just getting picked on, or maybe loosing an important customer or even your job) if those rules are not followed.  Just feel lucky you are not in a place like Japan, where the unwritten (but strictly enforced) rules about drinking (such as how you hold you glass when it's being filled) can get you into big trouble if they are not followed appropriately.

Since I consider myself a bit of an expert on drinking alcohol (20+ years experience   ;) )  I will offer my input.

Here in the US, most people feel that drinks fall into two basic types

sweet and fruity = Girly
Sour, bitter and/or strong = Manly

If you want a "girly" drink just because you don't want to taste the alcohol, there are many alternatives (some listed below)  that are basically unisex (just in case you're out in 'guy' mode and don't want people to get on your case).  If you want to drink "girly" drinks because they make you feel feminine and you want to express that, then drink whatever you want.

That being said here are some options for sweeter drinks that are basically unisex (or even masculine) in some cases.

-Two ingredient drinks (whiskey and Coke, Seven-and-seven, rum and coke, etc)

-Drinks that don't taste like alcohol (at least not too much) and any bartender worth a darn should know how to make. such as:

1. Margarita (Everyone knows what this is)
2. Long Island Ice Tea:  This drink was basically designed to hide the taste of the large amount of alcohol that is in it.
3. Alabama Slammer:  Basically tastes like fruit punch, and is also very good at hiding the large amount of alcohol that is in it.
4. Tequila Sunrise: It's in a song by The Eagles, so I'm pretty sure it's still unisex.
5. Mai Tai:  If you like tropical tasting stuff this will do it
6. Mojito: Tastes kinka like minty rum and 7-up
7. Midori Sour: Melon liqueur, but if you put the word "sour" after it, it doesn't come across quite as girly
8. Bloody Mary:  good choice but you need to like tomato juice
9. Whisky sour: tastes like whisky and lemonade

- If you like the taste of alcohol, but just wan't something mixed here are some options

1. Side car (cognac, orange liqueur) : Basically an orange version of the appletini.  Really strong, but sweet don't order if you don't want to taste alcohol.

2. Manhattan:  Tastes like whisky but a bit sweeter.

Just remember to Drink responsibly (or you will probably pay for it the next day),  and never drink and drive.

Enjoy.

-J

Great post SciNerdGirl! I agree with you!

Bloodmary was the last thing I asked when I was at a pub not two weeks ago. It wasn't bad at all, but mine was tasting too salty...

Nowadays I don't know...I think I simply surrendered to my taste for "girly" drinks.

I really don't drink much, just on very rare occasions, when I am hanging out with old friends...and this is perhaps once a month. I don't care anymore. If someone says "that's a girly drink" I'll say "so what?" and smile. But now mostly I stick with some malzbier and I'm done...I hate getting drunk.

Drinking red wine is great too and I don't think it is girly... but sometimes people says it is "made for fancy rich people".

Yeah, like men drink their coffee black and women like it with milk and such, sweet in other words.

Stupid stereotypes that society has created to separate women from men.

Personally I very much dislike beer, do not like the taste of it at all. Though there are some beers that are tolerable for my pallet. Such as Blue Moon beer. I would not drink it often, but if offered I would drink it. I would say I like ale (flavored ale), more specifically pumpkin ale. I had that in Halloween, and really liked the taste of it. I drink sort of fruity drinks per se. I like tequila sunrises, and such. I don't really order complicated drinks like ones listed so far, I think some are good, but I guess I do not think they are that great? I like drinking Tequila with salt and lime, rum and coke, Jack and coke. I like to try different drinks that sound good. Though I suppose I have had the hesitation of getting "girlie" drinks because of the stereotypes. Seeing as I am an insecure transguy and most of the time I feel like I am not man enough and such, so I hesitate. I end up getting them anyway, and just think "the hell with it".

Even so, thoughts of what people are thinking run through my head, such as "Why is that guy getting girlie drinks, ugh he's gay" or thoughts telling myself "Man all these guys getting beer I must look like an idiot." There is nothing wrong with being gay, nothing at all. I do not consider myself gay, but whenever people think I am, it just makes me feel like my female past is coming to haunt me, you know? Not sure if people had this similar kind of feeling. Then sort of fear runs through me, because you know how these idiots discriminate against gay people now imagine if they found our I'm trans.

Anyway sort of going off subject here. So I feel like I hesitate due to those stereotypes, but really that does not matter, at least it should not matter. Like I said, stupid bs people come up with to separate gender. It should be whatever people like and let it be. Not all women are "soft" and not all men are "tough", just be yourself and do what you want to do. As for drinks, it is all about what you like.
