Not sure of what you mean by "can it help?" Could you elaborate a little more?

It almost certainly can while you are in a hypnotic state but outside of that probably not as it would require not a change in habits or thought patterns but a change in identity.

If you mean without transitioning, no it wouldn't help.

No.
I'm an amateur hypnotist. I practice self-hypnosis, which has been very helpful throughout my transition. It's helped me discover who I was, it's helped me tame anxiety early on, and it's REALLY helped me during laser and electrolysis.
But you are dysphoric because you are wired to be a different gender from your birth sex. Hypnosis will not fix that. Maybe it will be able to distract you from your dysphoria or help you ignore it, but it will be there, and IMO that's kind of dangerous because it will find ways to come out.
I would beware of a professional hypnotist who claims he can help.
Professional hypnotists are an arrogant lot, second only to surgeons. You'd sort of have to be if your job is to put people asleep and then fix their minds. I got into a bitter argument with one online about whether hypnosis could fix a desire to compulsively cross dress that his patient had. He didn't realize I was transgender. I suggested he read up on transgender because compulsively crossdressing can be a sign of transgender and hypnosis couldn't fix that. He insisted that it didn't matter, that there was no such thing as being wired to be a certain gender and he was certain he could fix it.
Professional hypnosis costs more than $100 a session. Probably better things you can do with your $$

Um... that's not really how hypnotherapy works. They don't fix anything. It's a tool for people to explore their own minds and attempt to deal with what they see there. The trance state isn't so much putting people to sleep, but deeply relaxing someone and allowing the conscious mind to be bypassed, thus talking to the subconscious directly, where a great deal of people's issues stem from. There's a lot of stigma around it, that's for sure, but it's a tool just like asking someone the right questions. A method of accessing a part of someone usually clouded by self-talk, shame, fear, a whole raft of defense mechanisms.
I've met some pretty good ones.
I know this might go against the grain somewhat but... it can be helpful for many things. Not in the way you're thinking of, though. Professional hypnotherapy is one thing... hypnosis as a tool to make you think or feel something different to what you actually feel... well, that's a bit of a thorny issue. For one thing it depends how susceptible you are. People have differing capacity to accept suggestion and the trance state in general. Some, very rational and analytical types, it doesn't work at all for. But some it works almost too well for. It depends on the kind of person.
That being said, suggestion is just that. Suggestion. It's a prompt, or idea, placed into the subconscious to affect a change. However, and this is very important, as a general rule it doesn't work by telling someone that they're suddenly going to do something entirely different to what they've been doing. Even though the conscious mind is in a diminished state, it still knows when it's being fed a line, and when something goes against what they would do. For many people, doing something like that breaks the whole process immediately.
Added to that, it isn't a permanent thing. Just telling someone they're no longer going to feel, think, or do something... well, it doesn't work. Not in the long term anyway. Maybe it does for an hour, a day, but it wears off. Kira sums it up pretty well. Changes in thought patterns, habits, compulsions... they can be affected by gradual and prolonged hypnotic processes. Sometimes, and for some people. But a fundamental change in identity is something that's well beyond the scope of what the process is capable of.

I'm actually trained as a hypnotist. My certification is lapsed but the I used to make my living with it. Hypnosis can't make you do anything you aren't willing to do but it can bolster your willpower. I had a reasonable amount of success with addiction. I WILL use it to help my own transition because I want that to happen but it can't just make things go away.

Well hypnosis is in fact real, and does work, and it's very possible there is a hypnosis for what you are looking for. The only question is can it last long term? Because normally hypnosis only works while in a trance. Once out of it, everything goes back to normal, except you feel more awake and alive. But that's definitely something to look into.

Or are those stories just fake to scare people?

I've never heard of a real case like that. When I was practicing I had low light cameras recording to DVD so that I could prove my innocence if anyone made a claim like that. Yes, the clients were notified in advance and signed a paper noting that they were being recorded. I can't imagine anyone being able to touch someone under hypnosis and get away with it. Looking at them, on the other hand is another story.

Hypnosis can't make you do anything you aren't willing to do
I've heard dozens of hypnotists say this, but how can you possibly know that. Sure, it's very hard to get a hypnotized person do something they're not comfortable with. But I've done it. I got a girlfriend to do something in a trance that she later told me she didn't want to do.
I don't see how we can say that no one, not ever, could be be made to do something they were unwilling to do? There are people who get very deep, so that they have no memory of what happened when they were in a trance, and often won't even believe the hypnotist when it's described to them. (I've done that. She had no clue what happened during trance.)
And even I, who pretty much never gets especially deep in trance, have accepted suggestions that, after the trance, I regretted and definitely wouldn't have done if I'd been in a state to think about it.
I understand why hypnotists need to tell people they won't do something they're unwilling to do, especially those who make their living at it, but I don't think this is as certain as people say it is.
