So Ive looked on Google for a gender therapist in my area and have come up short, they must not pay Google enough to put em on the first few pages, as the search results erode into TG hate sites before I can find anyone advertising that is reasonably close to me.
Does anyone know of someone in my area? Or have a good way to search for a reputable one other than Google?
Im in Decatur, IL and all i can find is therapists in Chicago or Saint Louis. Both are 4 hours each way and an 8 hour drive seems a little ridiculous to me. Plus Big Citys like that give me major anxiety.
I have no problem driving to Springfield/ Bloomington/ Chaimpaign, IL but it seems absurd that theres no one in a 250 mile radius from me.
Its time to get this show on the road, 4 years of inaction is enough don't you think?
Thanks all.

Try your local college or university. See if they have a Psychology Department on campus. I found mine at Oklahoma State University and session are only $10.00 per and you do not have to be a student. Your local county health department may have some suggestions as well. Good luck! :)

I found mine (yay for first appointment next week) through Psych Central.
You can search by zip code, then narrow down by insurance/fees, specialties...even whether you prefer a male or female. Each person/clinic/office has a page with loads of info. Usually a way to contact them via email, all the phone numbers, license stuff, educational background.
It should also indicate if they are avaialble for on-line therapy.

i apologize about the long response time. I haven't been feeling up to getting out of bed, much less dealing with this. All the more reason to start dealing with it, huh?
Ill have to do some digging on the university route... I just moved here so i don't even know what university's are in the area haha.
I did not know there was such a thing as online therapy.. Im not a very tech savvy 20 something...
I will look into psychcentral also..
Thanks all!
now if i can just get out of bed....

I have used two on line therapists over the last 2 1/2 years. I have also met one in person whom I felt was not as experienced as those on-line. The ones on line have been fantastic and I have settled for one for over 18 months. They are listed in this site - check them out - they charge $135 per hour. Good luck. :)

Thats kind of scary! $135 an hour with my internet connection??? Id be lucky to get 15 minutes lol. I have frontier and its horrible. I cant even watch youtube half the time lol.
PS frontier is the only option for internet out here in Boonieville, so its not like i can switch unless i get satellite internet, which just is not feasible when you rent.
I just ran a speed test, my ping is 45, download is 1.15 mbps and my upload is 0.67 mbps. Is that even fast enough for online??

Mosy do the call on SKYPE, Viber or others. They can call your land line and thus no long distance calls.

Another site to try is www.psychologytoday.com (http://www.psychologytoday.com).
They let you search by zip code, then further filter to those who have experience with "Transsexual issues". It irks me that this filter is under the "Sexuality" category but at least for my location it listed several more therapists than PsychCentral.
Good luck in your search.

The problem with psychologytoday is that often the person will check off the transsexual box and they haven't even worked with someone with that issue (seems as if they click off gay/lesbian, they click off transsexual, also). I have also talked to therapists from that site who said they never checked it off and psychologytoday did.
Consider seeing a therapist who is a member of WPATH. Click on "Find a Provider" and put in your state:
http://www.wpath.org/
You can be certain that these therapists have training and expertise in working with trans* people. If there is no one close to you, contact the closest person on the list and ask them if they can recommend someone in your area. Most gender therapists know of one another.

I know what a skype is (barely) but i wouldn't know were to start on that seeing as im kind of a technophobe lol. I may yet pursue that path if the old fashioned way doesn't pan out... Speaking of that, has anyone had any experience with heard anything about Kelly Storck in St Louis? She looks the most friendly and doesn't seem to be on a high horse out of therapists if found so far..
any thoughts?
