I live in a small city in North Carolina...in the heart of Southern Baptist country and the bible belt.  I grew up here and even though I've kept a low profile all my life and don't know that many people, I do encounter people that knew me way back when and many that know I am trans.  I think I pass pretty well but, living here, I can never be fully stealth.  so, that being said I haven't had any problems with redneck intolerance, verbal or physical assaults etc.  I know a few people do not approve of my transition, but I get along well here and I don't see the religion of the people interfering with my life, regardless of what they may think.  I even have one old friend from school who is a Christian conservative and has also turned out to be one of my biggest allies.  His wife doesn't bother to understand me, or approve of me, but my friend did a lot of research and realizes that my transition was the treatment I needed in order to survive.

Howdeeee Do from Wild Wonderful West Virginia.

It's definitely difficult getting transgender care here, but I am managing to clear all hurdles so far.
Except for a few who give a funny look here and there (which I pay no attention) I'm doing ok here.
I guess that's good considering I'm in rural redneck country lol

Good luck, and you definitely are not alone.  ;)

Hi Melanie, though I'm originally from California and live in Florida now, for a few years I owned a farm in Marion County West Virginia near Fairmont. My reasons for selling it were lack of transgender support and the way I was treated by the locals who knew. Those that didn't know gendered me female unless I had to speak and my voice gave me away. It got so bad up there I was afraid to speak. I hope you live in a more accepting area of the state?

Here's a link to a thread I started in hopes of helping we girls who live close to one another get together if ya want to check it out: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,163072.0.html (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,163072.0.html)

Thank you Allyda, I will check out the link.  You are right, for trans, it is isolated. I'm in Cabell county, but it seems that awareness is rising in the area, especially near Marshall University

Progress may he slow here, but at least it IS progressing some

Glad to hear your area is making progress. Is Cabell county in the northern, or southern part of the state. It seemed to me people in the southern part of the state were more leniant to our position.

I'm in Kentucky and while not the heart of the bible Belt, far too conservative for a girl originally form the Northeast.  In my case its worse in that my wife has very conservative (Southern Baptist) roots and doesn't want to acknowledge the reality of my life.  Anyway, I feel I can't comfortably interact with anyone in her social circle as they would likely condemn me without giving me a chance to even talk about myself.

So, yes, living in the BB can be tough.  Its like you are living in a separate reality from everyone around you.  At least I am near a city and a college and so have places I can go for help and support.  It would be so much harder in an isolated rural region of the BB.

Since this thread seems to be still going, I currently live in Floral City Florida. I'm close to Inverness, Brooksville, Bushnell, Homosassa Springs, Wildwood, Hernando, and at the outside Crystal River and Ocala to the north, and Spring Hill and Hudson/Port Ritchey to the south. If you live in any of these areas and would like to get together and chat, pm me.

Also while I don't know if boating is your thing, I have a 21 foot bass boat I wouldn't mind finding someone to fish with out of. For now I usually go out alone. While I will be moving down south to the Okeechobee area before the 1st of the year, it'd still be nice to get to know a few girls here in my current area if your out there.

Central Missouri. Columbia has actually been very generous to me in terms of transition. 3 shrink visits and he called the doctor and I signed the consent papers the first time I met her. I had been expecting a long arduous process for low T.

By any chance are you near Springfield? I just moved here and I must say it's quite a difference from being in the North (Chicago, and more recently Denver to be exact); people also seem to have polar opposite views than those I took on. Heck, thinking about it, I doubt I've made any lasting acquaintances in the past couple of months. I have to say though that people here seem a lot friendlier upon general situations.

I used to live off of Gallatin & Douglas (the big 3 story on the corner) in Nashville back in the mid 90's after coming back east from my home state of California. I lived there for 3 years and loved it. Your right about it being cosmopolitan for a southern city. I was as accepted there as much as I was in LA.

A few of you girls made me smile! I was driving from Ohio to Aiken, S.C. to see my son, my biggest supporter a few weeks ago. I had stopped a  northern W.V. rest stop to pee. I still have to use the guys, but I am f/t (afraid I'll get arrested...waiting on the name change and gender marker). I almost got beaten there. On the trip back up north though, I had vowed not to even stop in W.V, but had to. This time I stopped at a travel area on the turnpike, very populated and public. It was kind of funny there, because a couple of women stopped me from going into the guy's room. S.C. was okay. I'm job searching there.

Jesus Christ, no pun intended. The bible belt is liberal when comes to the catholic belt. Just because I breathe and think on my own I am going to hell. >:-) But hey I am on "The Highway to Hell". That is the one song I want played at my funeral. That and Hell's Bells and Black Sabbath. God, I must be sacrelgious. But.. "I would rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints".

Grew up in Columbia, MO,  I now live in Wichita KS. Feel free to PM anytime. I actually used to travel to Eureka Springs, Tahlequaw, and Tulsa quite a bit.

Living in the Bible Belt is definitely different. I find I just need to keep my history to myself.

Sarah,

I was actually in Los Angeles in 1982, but I retuned to Wichita in 1984 and it's changed a lot since then. The airplane plants are still there but their employment numbers have been reduced greatly since then. Yes "54" has change a lot since the 80's, for the better!!

You know, life in Wichita is not bad. When I first began my transition, I was pretty sure I was going to have a hard time; but the people I needed to explain things to in the early stages were actually very compassionate.  I sometimes think it may have just been out of politeness , but some of those people are still in my life. Prior to getting Brownback in as Gov. I was able to get my gender changed on my drivers license with just my name change and a letter from my therapist, that kinda surprised me! And made things SOOOO much easier for me when having to produce an ID. Of course Brownback changed that after becoming Governor. These days, I don't share my past if not required, and I'm lucky enough to not be questioned much; I do still worry about people's reactions should they inadvertently find out about my past. None of the "friends" I've made here in the past few years know I was born different.

Wouldn't say stealth, everyone at my job knows, and everyone that knew me a few years ago knows. They have for the most part been supportive, and they have expressed their support  for the upcoming surgery. I just don't share my past with people I meet, or have met in the past 2 to 3 years.

Wichita doesn't really have a lot of resources either, when I first began my transition they had a support group, but I was the only one that identified as transsexual that regularly attended, so I wasn't able to discuss a lot of my concerns. It was helpful though as I was able to start building confidence in going out dressed as a woman. It takes a while. True-fully, I think confidence is a key element in going out and not being read, or at least not being questioned. I sometimes wonder if people I've met in the last couple years know or suspect, but like I said, I don't discuss it unless I need to. If someone came straight out and asked, I'm not sure how I would respond.

Wow! So many girls reppin the Lou!  3 short weeks ago I felt so alone, and then I began to search and found out that I wasn't at all.  I know I don't know y'all, but just knowing you are out there is a great feeling.  *Hugs*

I wish this site was around when I tried to come out when I was younger, I know I would be fully transitioned and living so happily by now  :(  I wasn't sure that I would ever have the courage to transition, but this site has really made me see the possibilities. :)   My courage has grown leaps and bounds in just the last few days here.  Thank you all for sharing so much of yourselves to help others.

I do think you messed up quoting me fusstangtroy, but yeah AC/DC rocks. But try the song "Faries Wear Boots" by Black Sabbath in a convertable with Stilletto thigh high boots with fishnet stockings and a black miniskirt with a black tank top in full make up and long flowing curly hair, with or without big boobs, in a red neck town and see how many people look and how they look at you. Funny how the way you dress and wear your makeup and hair will fool most people, especially rednecks. ;)  Especially when the song should have given it away. ;D

A big thanks for telling us how you feel and deal with being out in world .My future will be trying to make the leap to some full time .I hope i can be as pretty as yourself. It helps for gals just starting out( like me) to hear how others get to future phases of life. AKA Sara

Interesting how you mentioned the Sabbath song "Faries Wear Boots" and passing around rednecks. I have a friend who is scared if I go with him up to a little Fl. town called Fort White just outside of Gainsville I'd be putting my life in mortal danger (or so he says), so at the last minute plans of me going to drive him back from the University Hospital in Gainesville (he has bad skin cancer, and is going up Wednesday for Radiation injectments in his arms). On the way back we'd have to stop off in Fort White (a 40 minute detour) to pick up his wife who's staying with friends up there. Well, here's the facts he's forgetting: Where we live in the very small 1 stoplight town of Floral City, is redneck country and I'm always gendered correctly, I just got back from a drive I took myself down to Okeechobee via Fl Route 27 through the heart of Florida Cracker/redneck country where I was always gendered correctly everywhere, and, just the general fact I'm always gendered correctly no matter where I go, and the only way anyone would know I was trans is if he said something. Now, this "friend" who says he has no problem with trans people is beginning to sound to me like a hippocrite, who's afraid to be seen with me in public despite the fact I've not been clocked in well over 5 years. His family/friends don't know me, and have never seen me before. And we'd only be there for 5 minutes or so picking up his wife.

I was a little hurt over this last minute plans change made by my so called "friend" who supposidly has no problem with trans people, and Jess42's post sort of reminded me of the situation. Sorry everyone if I went off topic a bit. But this has been bothering me for a few days now and I needed to get it out.

Allyda. I really can't say for sure 'cause your friend may very well be concerned about your safety but on the other hand you may be right. Face him eye to eye and ask him, or that's what I would do.

But I notice times are changing and there is a more live and let live attitude in these redneck areas. Hell I'm a redneck myself, or maybe a pinkneck. ;) Yeah, I think I prefer pinkneck. But when I was younger gaybashing was pretty much the norm and now, the last time I went home, people in my family have gay  extended family members and it's pretty much no big deal. Hell, someone was telling me about going to another city which I won't name and seeng a transgendered woman and he was telling me that was the first time he had seen a transwoman, not "->-bleeped-<-", not "->-bleeped-<-", not "heshe" or any of the other derogatory names we get called. I was floored, especially coming from him with no malice or disgusted look or nothing other than if we were talking about him seeing a minor celebrity in that he has never seen one of those either. I am stealth and no one knows about me being trans so I know it wasn't to spare my feelings. Just a little observation.

Thanks Jess42, but I've no problem passing and this person knows this. I'll look him in the eye and ask him as you suggest and gauge his reply, however his son backs up my reasoning because he overheard a few things. My so called friend doesn't know it, but his son is a transgender man (FTM). He's in stealth mode because he see's how his father's acting around me. I'll keep y'all posted.

I wold have to say with that little tidbit of information, you are right. I would definately still ask him and then confront him as to why, especially if ya'll have been friends for a while. Might even get him aking the question about himself and change feelings because all that stuff may be on a more subconscious level and may even make things better for his own child.

I'm really worried about the child. Last night his father grabbed him by the throat over some argument they were having non trans related, and as a result he moved out today while his father is gone for his cancer appt' in Gainesville 2 hours away. I'm in contact with him via internet on this site (I turned him on to Susan's as soon as he told me about himself). He's at his SO's so he's safe for now. His mother knows about him being trans and is very supportive. She's trying to get bus or train tickets for him to get to her place in Savannah Ga. I told him I live by two rules: No one has a right to put their hands on you, and, friendships don't come with strings attached. He's just a kid and does everything he can to help his father out which, it's a mini farm complete with pigs cows goats chickens turkeys, 5 dogs, and in general a lot of work to keep up. Father or not he had no right to grab him by the throat. He's supposed to call me here in a little bit. I hope he's got good news.

I thank you very much for your concerns. But right now my problem with the father can wait. If that is, I still even call him a friend after this. Right now I'm more worried about the kid.

Ally I live an hour away from you.

I have a great endo and Shrink in Orlando if you ever need them.

Deep stealth here.... and very jeolous wife so I may not get up to meet, but good to know someone who I repect so much is nearby.

If I get up there to buy racekart parts I will pm you.  There is a racing shop ten miles from you.

I am not presentable yet I would be very embarrassed if you saw me half transitioned and half stealthy.  I look like a rock singer right now.

Awe that's sweet, thanks for the offer. Hey, we all go through that awkward transition stage/s. I still have these scars on my face and though I pass wherever I go I wear a lot less ponytails these days (that is, unless I'm out on my boat). I need my hair down to cover them as best it can.

We should get together SatinJoy if you get over this way. We could take my boat out. Just a couple of girls out having fun, lol! That's what Pat (JustPat) & I did down south when I went on vacation. What a nice surprise your living so close to me.
