This is something I've started to notice and I've measured myself on several occasions, but I've actually lost height. pre-hrt I was 5'9" and I've been like that for a long while. But now, I'm affirmed 5'7.5" feet.
My brother visited me the other day (he's starting to warm up to talking to me and visiting me, he stopped talking to me for 8 months when I told him I was transitioning). Anyway, my brother has always been shorter than me (he's 5'8"), but now he's taller. He's also much bigger -- although, he hasn't changed in size, but I have.
It's really surreal to see my brother, because we used to look very much alike. We had the same build and looks. But now, I'm much, much smaller. It's a weird feeling, like looking into a mirror into the past. My shoulders are much smaller, my arms, everything. He's so huge, and I used to be built like that.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else noticed that they've lost some height while on HRT. I think it's because I've lost a lot of muscle mass.
Oddly enough, my shoe size is a bit smaller as well. And I wouldn't think that feet would shrink.

I lost a lot of muscle mass and 1 inch in height. I know that the loss of muscle mass is related to HRT in my case however the loss of height in my particular case is uncertain as we do tend to get a little shorter as we age, and I've aged :)

I haven't lost even one single mm in height (I'm 39), though I've lost more than a size in shoes (I'm 9-9.5 US Female Size).

Heightwise, I shrank a little bit. Maybe a bit less than half an inch from my peak.
My feet shrank noticeably, at least a full shoe size. Unfortunately that means I have a protruding bone (slight) here and there, but its not bad.

Muscle loss can cause a shrinking back. Bones don`t shrink. (from what I`ve been told) My ciropractor said when I stop being a stone mason to keep up some kind of excersise on my back or it will shrink meaning the soft tissue between the vertebret is crunching from lack of muscle support.

That's another thing that gives me hope. I'm around 5'9", and recently, I started hating it, as it's not the height the majority of females are. Now I just live with it. I fluctuate between 135-140 pounds, and have slimmed alot in the past few years, but my damn shoulders are still as big as a linebacker. Once I start full HRT, I'm hoping that changes ALOT.

Well, I've never even thought about "shrinking"... That's funny... I remember someone said Hormone wouldn't make miracle, but it would make magic...
I'm only around 5' 4.5" (haven't measured for a long time). I was hoping I could grow a bit higher, but now I hope I wont shrink instead... My shoes are size 7 US Female, and for that I don't mind, if it shrinks a lil bit... :)

Interesting as I noticed I have shrunk to 5ft 6inch I used to be 5ft 7 inches. Of course I am 48 so that might account for it, lol.
I also thought the other day that when I went out as a male I always thought I was small for a man and most were taller. Now I think I am tall (for a woman), crazy.

I certainly haven't shrunk in the slightest after about 15 months of HRT, and to tell the truth I kind of hope that I don't start to. Sure, being able to buy jeans that aren't way too short would be nice, but really thats a minor thing, and the only benefit that immediately comes to mind. I like being tall, it makes me feel attractive as a woman. And being tall doesn't mean that people don't see me as a woman, they just see me as a tall woman. Go figuire ::).
I'm 6'5" by the way. My feet have gone from an Australian 12 to an 11 - but I lost a lot of weight. Nothing magical about that, just eating sensibly.

I didn't think that shrinking was possible. I knew that one could get smaller because of losing muscle mass, but after reading all these posts ,I guess it's quite possible! If my upper body would shrink a bit, that would make me so happy! I'm not to concerned about my height because I,m 5' 10" and this day and age Biological females are getting taller. There are a few bio. females that I know , that are about my height. It's not all that unusual to see taller women out there!
Hmmm! I wonder if my hands would shrink too. ???

I'm not on hormones yet, but I wanted to comment on Melissa's post about losing foot size. I have lost about a full size since I lost 40 lbs. I swore there's NO way I could lose foot size just by losing weight but I have shoes that I couldn't wear before and now I can. Also, I put my wedding ring on my finger the other day just to see if my finger size changed, oh my God! It just falls off my finger. It's amazing what losing weight can do to parts of your body you never thought much about.

I have lost at least an inch in height. I think the more you distribute the weight around you are going to see differences in several places. I exersize everyday so that I don't acumulate it in the wrong places. I am very vain about my figure. That is just me! It is a constant battle. I fluctuate from 128 to 135 lb's all the time. I have always had small feet, but wide. It was hard to find shoes in the begining, but my feet have narrowed a bit making it a little easier to find shoes that fit.

Oh, good, I'm not the only person who shrank. I know a lot of women who are taller than me. It seems like the younger people are as tall as me or taller. I'm pretty average height around here.
I lost a lot of weight when I went on HRT, too.

I heard many said they gained weight because of HRT... but in my case, I also lost at least 10lbs 1-2 monthes after I started HRT about 3 years ago. I guess it's more like an excuse for those who complain they gained weight because of the hormone... I think it more depends on if you take care of yourself...
After reading all the posts, now I'm seriously worrying about the "shrinking", cause I fear my hip gonna shrink... I'm around 116 lbs, and I was thinking to lose a few pounds more, but now I doubt if I really need that...

I didn't realize that you would shrink in size. I know the muscle mass would diminish and that would account for shoulder and arm size. If you lost any weight you could go down in shoe size. I thought maybe it was cause I was getting older. I was 5'11.5" before HRT and now 3 years post op I'm 5'9". Now during that time I have lost 60lbs through dieting, but have gain 20 of it back. I lost a lot of muscle and my shoe size has come down a size from the time I started HRT.

I hope I don't shrink, as I'm already only 4 inches away from needing a booster seat according to those Disney billboards! >:(
I have however, lost about 8 pounds in a little over a month. I started HRT about the same time. It has me kind of worried, since that brought my weight down to 90 lb.

I lost 4¾ inches, but that might be the osteoporosis kicking in now. My osteo rating is -2.5, so I know there's been some spinal compression.
I guess it's time to go back on the estrogen again and build the bones a little. It's important to have SOMEBODY'S hormones I guess...my T is 'way down.
I do notice that I can wear 9½ woman's shoes now, and I used to need 11½ W's before.

The shoe size was in the last three or four months I guess..it just kinda crept up on me.
Height...well, that's been declining for about six years...but I know the smashed spine and osteo is basically the problem..a heck of a way to lose the height I know...but I always wished I was 5'6" or so...then an early transition would have been a good idea.
As it is, I am NOT going to transition...too old and I enjoy what I have now.
My dress size is now 12, shoes 9½, jeans are 10 Lo-rise Petite, boot-cut.
Male neck is now 13, male shoes are 8 and slacks are 34/30.
Yeah..I am growing smaller! It's about time!
PS: gonna re-start the Estrogen again next week...got a script for it from the VA. They are treating my PSA/prostate with it. The first few shots (IM) are by them then I self inject later on. Gonna kill a few oranges during training I guess.

I agree with you on body mass and I've lost weight around the shoulders and if I pull out a T shirt from about 6 years ago it is miles too big for me. But it could be just me watching my diet...

I know i am bringing this topic from death, but basicly i wanted to open one with similar topic.
Anyway... i am 20, i have stated HRT some 2 months ago. The thing thats recently been in my mind is definetly my height. During my entire late teens i was, (and still am, i believe) 185 (+/- 1cm) which is 6'1.
Recently someone (not very good minded) told me that it is very likely to keep growing till age of 25, which was enough for me to satrt obsessing about my height once more. So my questions are:

Recently someone (not very good minded) told me that it is very likely to keep growing till age of 25, which was enough for me to satrt obsessing about my height once more. So my questions are:
- would it be possible for someone like me, who is on hrt, and haven't had any major height increase in years, to gain height?
- when i measure myself in the eryly morning when i have just gotten out of bed i was like 187cm (almoust 6'2) and during the day, in the afternoon i am like 184-5 which is an inch of variation, so what is my real height? morning or evening? or does 187 means i have actually grown?
- I'd love to be a bit shorter... and i was in fact hoping for height DECREASE. as i've read on this topic that even younger girls have lost anywhere from 1-3 inch so it can't be attributed to osteoporosis. So, how long before you noticed height decrease if it happened at all?

Hrt will likely stop the growth, and has in some cases caused some to lose a few inches.
As for height changes during the day, so it at the same time each day.
When you wake up, your skeleton has time to relax and stretch. Throughout the day you beat it down, and you shrink a bit. am not sure if it is all fluid or a bit of cartilage, but something compresses, resting/laying down allows it to relax again,

I find this subject really interesting,
I always thought that i was 5,4 but since i found this post i have been measuring myself at different times to take into account the whole skeleton relaxing/stetching issue as Leslie mentioned.
My personal verdict is i seem to have lost some real height and just make it to 5,2 now. I havent noticed any feet size change yet but i also dropped around 40lb like Megan so im not sure if thats had anything to do with it.
Still im happy to be small, as a boy it seemed horrible now it get's me attention.

I totally hear you on the foot shrinkage though. Was a women's size 6.5US, now I can slip into a 5.5US. It's convenient cuz this winter I'm able to wear 3 pairs of socks in my old shoes:D
What I REALLY can't wait for is some rib cage shrinkage due to intercostal/oblique/lattissimus dorsi atrophy.

So my questions are:Thanx in advance, i hope to hear your experiences
Mari,
At your age, I would expect you to stop growing and start shrinking as soon as you start HRT. One inch is pretty standard (Starting at 25, I went from 6' 1/2 to 5'11 1/2" myself). Your "reduction" will happen mostly in your first year on HRT.
Also unless you're really skinny, you will definitely lose some weight due to all the T-induced muscle mass going down the toilet. I lost about 30-40 lb during the early phase of transition myself. Now, this could also have been because I was starving myself ::) but I did lose the weight ;) I've always thought that it's good to lose a bunch of weight when starting transition though (again, if you're not already super-thin), since as your body settles into a pattern of estrogenized fat distribution afterwards, the weight you gain will go to "the right places": off your waist and into your hips and the boobs area.

Being tall you get the "basketball" thing so much you hardly want to get it more by marking yourself like that.

Thats true enough hunny
but catwalk models all share your traits was my point, you cant also be every onlookers injuries :). Anyway i hear the air quailities sooo much better up there.
Likewise theres are whole fashion range that look great on taller women. I look great in short dresses but standing next to my tall counterpart....she just rocks!!!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else noticed that they've lost some height while on HRT. I think it's because I've lost a lot of muscle mass.
Oddly enough, my shoe size is a bit smaller as well. And I wouldn't think that feet would shrink.
Ohh yeah....from a towering 5'8" down to 5' 6", and a size smaller foot to boot! or shoe.

thank you all and especially soldierjane for in-depth explanation... ;)
It gives me hope...
But i also have to agree with (some of) you that beeing tall can be cool too. And i don't mind beeing tall, just that i wouldn't like to be super tall, cuz i would love to wear heels and still be able to pass "smoothly" through average door farme.
Yes, models are tall but very few are over 6''. So if i from around 6'1'' end up at 6' or even maybe 5'11'' that would really be WOW. And sure if my 44EU/12US womans size feet get any smaller i wouldn't complain either ;D

This sounds exactly like me, I'm 20, 6'1'' and and an 11-12 womens shoe US....I would assume that because we are so young we would have a pretty good chance of shrinking our features if we start transition early enough!!

Well i am slightly over 3 months into HRT now, and haven't noticed anything
height-wise... Maybe its too early, but i am also afreid of still growing a bit taller, so i don't know what to expect. We just have to accept it may never happen, and if it does, well good for us. :)

Before HRT, I had just made; five foot seven inches and a few 16th's. With help! I weighed approx, 118 lbs.
After I started HRT, and was on it awhile, very noticeable things began to happen. What little upper male muscle mass I had, diminished along with strength. My shoulders fell slightly. My neck thinned. My legs lost muscle. I felt different in my hips, as I walked.
After about 2 years of full blown HRT, I had l lost more than a foot in height. Currently today, I am just under 5' 6"... 134-140 lbs.
Depends on seasonal time of year, and water retention. I watch my weight seriously. My husband loves it that I am smaller, and easy to lift...
My physician told me, that it was common for transitioning MtF TS's to lose height. It has to do with muscle mass density loss, and the different fats and water that we then acquire...
Personally, I am glad it happened.

Ive been on Hrt for 5 months and my height of 5.9 3/4 hasn't changed at all. Im 25 btw. honestly I don;t think my height or shoe size will change because I have so little muscle mass to lose. I would love to go down a shoe size though from 11 mens. As for weight Ive gone from 125 to 133. Since ive been trying to straighten my posture also if anything I feel a lot taller because im standing up straight without slouching now.

I'm 5' 7" and wish I could shrink down to 5' 5", that would be ideal.
I've found since i've been on HRT I've put on weight and not in the right places either, mostly on my belly which is worse than before HRT. I Have however lost shoulder mass but haven't put weight on on my lower body as I would have predicted. But I'm not about to give up yet!

I have been wondering about upper body mass.. I guess the muscles decrease but you still have that shoulder span. Unless your bones shrink sideways as well? Hips expand, shoulders shrink? the muscles Im worried about are the ones on top of the shoulders that connect to the neck.. just feeling them they're noticable! My hair can only hide them so much!! Also if your neck shrinks would that make your adams apple stand out any more?
I left my last job a few months ago because I had to do some heavy lifting which made me freak out about my upperbody becoming more defined! :S

I lost a lot of muscle mass and 1 inch in height. I know that the loss of muscle mass is related to HRT in my case however the loss of height in my particular case is uncertain as we do tend to get a little shorter as we age, and I've aged :)

I'm curious about the height and shoe size changes.
If anybody is willing to answer their height and weight before HRT and after the stopped shrinking. I'm curious about ages too.
I am currently 22 and am 5'9" and weigh about 145lbs. I am starting HRT within the next couple weeks.
