Happened to me yesterday for the first time.  I was really down and was listening to basically songs to keep me there.  I must have listened to Bullet by Hollywood Undead about 20 times.  I noticed on the recommended for you list Hero by Skillett and was bawling my eyes out by the end of it.  good tears I think because iy brought me to a better place then where I had been stuck.

The only song that gets me close to that state is Heroes by David Bowie.

I'm a real softy and even before I started HRT it wouldn't take much to get the waterworks going. Biggest tear jerker for me is the super manipulative, saccharin sodden Honey (I Miss You) by Bobby Goldsbro. Sad, I know. Certainly not my usual musical taste, but it chokes me up every time.

"Deep Purple" by Nino Temple & April Stevens. I was 13 and deeply in love. He was the same age and that song was playing when he gave me my first ever passionate kiss. OMG the feelings!!!

Every time I hear that song, the world goes on pause for a few minutes while I remember young love :)

Luke Bryan - Drink a Beer - does it to me every time. The song makes me sad about my wife leaving; the lyrics in the song are about someone dying but they are appropriate to the situation with my wife too. We used to sit together often on a certain pier and watch the sun set over the ocean.

Another one is Trace Adkins - You're gonna miss this. They played it at my youngest daughters high school graduation and I just barely kept from bawling. My life was beginning to fall apart at that point and that song hit me hard.

Disc 2 of Dream Theater's Six Degrees.  It's sort of like one song with many parts.  Last time I heard it I was a complete disaster.

Shostakovich really poured his soul into this piece.  You can just feel everything that he was going through and the world that surrounded him.  In a weird way, I really feel this piece unlike anything else and it always makes me emotional.  He seemed to find a way to relate his pain with everyone else, and it's something we all share in some way.  what always hits me is the 4th movement and the "knocks" as I have my own anxieties and fears that play in my head.  In a weird way it sort of takes me back.  I can't imagine what Shostakovich went through, but I can understand and feel the pain.

Anyone that has struggled with drugs in some way or has lost someone to it can really understand the emotions behind this.  Whenever I crave to just abuse and numb myself from pain in some way, I remind myself that they don't work in the end and only cause harm to everyone around me as well as myself.  Even though this song was originally written for his family member dying of cancer and wasn't intended to be about drug abuse, many relate it with that as I have.

It's funny you mention that because I find instrumental music to be the most emotional of all.  Like lyrics can inspire you and make you feel all these different emotions, but really it comes down the the music and it's performance.  At least, I've always been the way.

Going by your avatar, I'd assume you're a Final Fantasy fan.  That franchise has some heavy hitters for sure.  VIII and X in particular have very emotional soundtracks.

Specifically, "I'm Already There (Letters from Home)" by Lonestar destroys me every time.  I served in the USMC and now my wife and daughters are in New England while I'm here in South Florida because of my job and the job situation (or lack of one) up north.

"The Love of a Friend" I performed this with my HS choir at my graduation.

"An American Elegy" by Frank Ticheli.  A band piece written for Columbine HS after the shootings, it is a beautiful piece that I pour so much of myself into the playing every time I play it (as in perform), I just break down.

I've found that more music tears me up quicker now that I've accepted myself as the feminine person I am, than ever did before.  Though these three have always done it.

The only song that brings tears to my eyes only after watching the video and especially reading the short story that that song is based from is November Rain by Guns and Roses.

There a lot of songs that get me crying. Most all of them are by Savatage. "If I Go Away" hits me hard every time.  :'(  Then there is "Heal My Soul" and "Believe"  i could easily name several more. They are even sadder to me because of the guitarists Criss Oliva having died. He and his brother Jon wrote with so much emotion. Even after 20 years they still get me every time. Also a song called "Save Me" from Globus.

I just listened to the main theme from Schindler's List, and that one did me in.  Also, Trace Adkin's  "You're Gonna Miss This"....I had forgotten about that one until I read through the thread again.

Harry Chapin.  Lots of Harry Chapin.  Cat's in the Cradle is just such a tale of misery being passed from one generation to the next, Mr. Tanner is a story of broken dreams, WOLD is about a wasted life, and Taxi about unrealized potential due to drug abuse...  I think the happiest song he ever did was about a trucker dying and scattering a truckload full of bananas all over the road.

I cry at 90's Disney songs, which set me off for being so pathetically sappy but also because they remind me of a part of my life I had to cut myself off from growing up. Like I wasn't allowed those songs, only my sisters were. Songs I only heard from down the hall and never got to learn and sing and stuff. Dumb songs, like "Part of Your World" and "Colors of the Wind" and "Reflection" and all those things. I only rediscovered this stuff a little while ago so I'm digging into it all over again with the freedom to celebrate and connect with them. Those are the songs that make me cry these days.

Wow...just wow!  That Icelandic hymn was so beautiful, it made me cry too.  It epitomizes why I love hymns and chant.  Thank you for sharing that one. 

P.S.  The acoustics in that facility were amazing!!!

I love Sigur Rós but then again, I used to live by their studio so again bias. Unfortunately they are going off YouTube since they refused to sing up to the new licence agreement, ohh well.

I've had a few instances where a song caught me off guard. A few months ago, I was listening to a collection of Disney songs while just going about doing my normal computer business. When the song "God Help the Outcasts" came up, it made me cry. Also, I've found that "Hymn of Promise" could make me tear up on the last verse. I think that song spoke volumes to the uncertainty in life I was going through about a year ago. Probably the strangest one to cause me to cry was a remix I was listening to of the intro music for "Legend of Zelda, Windwaker." The whole track was instrumental, but it seemed to evoke something in me which I can't quite explain.

Update- To be totally honest, I lost it over losing Nero.  If you all didn't know, I was a close friend of his and confidante.  I literally had to go to a different therapist when he died.  At least it was this song that really set off the grieving process for me.  I spent too long partially blaming myself for his passing and I think I needed that.

I guess I'm making progress because I saw Elton John on Saturday and didn't lose it that badly when he opened with this song.

I still think it was the best thing he ever wrote.

Not that I am religious, because I'm not. But, the song reminds me of a dear friend of mine who passed away many years ago and I was in a Choir that year. We did a tribute to him with that song. So, now, I can't listen to that song with out thinking about him.

I want to expand on this because at the time, I had only heard the Single version which was cut down in length considerably.

The full 6-minute album version is much better because the vocals start off just as normal before Bowie's desperation shows towards the end.  It just plays out so much better in full version.  It's such a tragic beautiful song too.

That's how you do emo-like screaming.  Modern pop-rock bands have nothing on Bowie.
