Title: I'm going blonde!
Post by: Starla on April 27, 2014, 05:31:04 AM
Hey ladies and gents.....as a life long brunette I recently decided I wanted a change. So yesterday I went to CVS and got a box of L'OREAL "SUPER BLONDE" and I'm just about to start right now! I also got some Sally Hansen creme hair bleach to bleach my eyebrows......so I don't look completely ridiculous  I am VERY nervous because I have never dyed my hair a completely different color before but am welcome to change.

Wish me luck! I may post pics.....if I have enough confidence  :P
After 26 years of being a brunette I guess I will find out if blondes really do have more fun!

Couple things. Id recommend going to Sally Beauty and having them hook you up with the right bleach, toners, etc for your hair type and color. You're gonna be doing a little damage, regardless, but waay more with box dyes. Don't forget to get some professional conditioner cause yeah, gonna want that.

Second, be prepared to do this again. If you're naturally a reaally dark brunette, your hair will probably come out a darker blonde the first time. Wait 6-8 weeks or so and do it again, and it should come blonder. But waittt to bleach again if you don't like the color. Your hair needs time to repair :)

Also, roots are a pain. One of the reasons I didn't keep up with it. I get at least 3/4 inch new growth a month, so my roots come through fast. Just remember, it's a committment.

Also? Don't dye the eyebrows. Please, please, pleaasedont try that. If your final goal is platinum get the eyebrows done at a salon.

Other than that? Have funn! I've done black, golden brown, platinum blonde, and most recently red. It's funn to mix things up, so enjoy. Lana is a goddess. And enjoy :D

Leave it to a competent hairdresser unless you really know what you're doing.I tried it myself when I first started HRT and made a mess of it.I ended up going to a professional hairdresser. It's fun over the past 12 years I've gone from brown, red, blonde, black, brown again, black cherry, red again, blonde again and now growing out the blonde to  ash blonde (my hair seems to have lightened after 24 years HRT) for the last 18 months).

Going blonde from dark hair is not recommended to be done in one day. Some people actually recommend half a year of careful 10 or 20 vol bleach bathes, LOTS of conditioning treatments, oils etc. to avoid damage.

I have to go with Big Lim on this one. A first time and radical hair color change is really, really best left to the pros. For one thing these are icky chemicals that are best to have minimal exposure to the skin and some can even cause eye damage. And then there's the fact that most people who do the dark to blonde thing from a kit the first time end up with entirely unsatisfactory results. Also, in order to go from a dark brunette to blonde, you normally have to remove all the color from you hair (making it white like your grandma's), then add the lighter color to it. Bleached hair takes on a different texture and is dryer, thus requiring very a careful conditioning regimen forever thereafter.

Real blonde hair tends to actually be a lot of different light tones, but straight from the bottle blonding gives that all one tone look. Some people like that, of course, and some these days even go for unnatural primary colors. Do think it through and have a clear idea what you'd like to end up with.

Quick update! Ummm yea I should have waited and listened to all of you before I did this. My hair is more of an orange/copper color  :(

But it's fine. I'll post some pics of the color shortly.

Yes. Unless you have some hair loss problem, then you have a lot of margin to experiment with your hair. A sudden change or a gradual change are both optional.

In my case, I leave my hair untouched as possible, minimizing any treatment to avoid any further hair loss. Treatment by straightener had caused damage to my hair.

Some people here recommend me to dye partially with slightly brownish color, as they think my hair is completely dark and black, making me look too sharp.

Oh really? Interesting!
I don't hate it.....but maybe I just have to get used to it. I already miss my black hair though, lol!

That's how dark hair fades. Black, dark brown, brown, red brown, red, orange, orangey yellow, pale yellow, white, you're bald bitch.

What colour are you aiming for now? If you want to go blonder, deep-condition your hair, coconut oil, hair masks etc. then bleach them after about a month, then use a toner and voila

:D

Probably gonna go back to my original color and leave it alone for good. I've been doing a good job of not exposing my hair to extreme heat etc etc and then I go and dump a bunch of bleach and chemicals on it  :( I don't hate the color, but if I could go back and NOT do it.....I would.

Lesson learned I guess  ^-^

Ok it seems like you got the same thing as I do when it comes to hair coloring. You got this red undertone and it showed its face when you went to lighten it.

If you want to go blonde still, try using an ash blonde. It really helps keep the red away.

I also have red undertones and I also want to dye my hair blonde some time (it's medium brown right now) but I want to make it a sandy blonde mixed with a honey blonde, will I be able to do that without the red undertones coming out to get me?

Melanie, if you use one with ash in the name, it helps out a lot.
Though the easiest way to not have to deal with that yourself is to get it professionally done.

Yeah, I'll rather pay a little (or a lot I guess) extra to get the colour I want but I don't think I'll keep doing it, it will cost too much to keep it up so I'll maybe do at once or twice and then let it grow out

I used to do mine at home or get my sister in law to help, Everything from fudge pink and red to platinum blonde (p.s I love dark eye brows with blonde hair)

That said hair dressers are generally very nice people and very good at what they do, more expensive yes but beats sitting in your bathroom choking on fumes for a often not so perfect result.

With all due respect, DO NOT use box dyes, EVER. Even if they contain the title "ashiest of'em all"

Box dye damage the hair as they very often contain high percentage of peroxide in them, and getting them out of the hair is just.. Ugh. Bye.

Plus they're not versatile, as getting an ashy blonde is very, very personal. It depends on your base-colour.

As I said, EVERY dark hair fades black, dark brown, reddish brown, red, red orange, orange, orangey yellow, golden yellow, yellow, pale yellow, white, you're bald b*tch :)

Getting your hair done professionally is not a guarantee you'll get it done nicely. I was disappointed couple of times by what the hairdresser did to my hair and they had a lot less knowledge about the hair than I did.. Bye.

Do it yourself. Don't use higher percentage of developer than 20 vol, keep it for 30 min max, use lots of conditioning masks, protein treatments, coconut oil, argan oil, and once you get to pale yellow, dilute purple veggie hair dye with lots of white silicone-free conditioner and voila.

Good luck!

Well about a month later. And I just got done playing Tennis so my hair is messy  :D I used a toner soon after that took some of the red/orange color out of it.
